Rethinking the American City: An International Dialogue

Rethinking the American City: An International Dialogue

Author(s)/Editor(s): Miles Orvell and Klaus Benesch | Size: 11.8 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press | Year: 2013 | pages: 232 | ISBN: 081224561X

Whether struggling in the wake of postindustrial decay or reinventing themselves with new technologies and populations, cities have once again moved to the center of intellectual and political concern. Rethinking the American City brings together leading scholars from a range of disciplines to examine an array of topics that illuminate the past, present, and future of cities.

Rethinking the American City offers a lively and fascinating survey of contemporary thinking about cities in a transnational context. Utilizing an innovative format, each chapter opens with an iconic image and includes a brief and provocative essay on a single topic followed by an extended dialogue among all the essayists. Topics range from energy use, design, and digital media to transportation systems and housing to public art, urban ruins, and futurist visions. By engaging with key contemporary concerns—public and private space, sustainability, ethnic and racial divisions, and technology—this volume illuminates how global society has imagined American urban life.

Contributors: Klaus Benesch, Dolores Hayden, David M. Lubin, Malcolm McCullough, Jeffrey L. Meikle, David E. Nye, Miles Orvell, Andrew Ross, Mabel O. Wilson, Albena Yaneva.

A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture: 1960-2010

A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture: 1960-2010

Author(s)/Editor(s): Elie G. Haddad and David Rifkind | Size: 16.5 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Ashgate Pub Co | Year: 2014 | pages: 501 | ISBN: 140943981X

1960, following as it did the last CIAM meeting, signalled a turning point for the Modern Movement. From then on, architecture was influenced by seminal texts by Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi, and gave rise to the first revisionary movement following Modernism. Bringing together leading experts in the field, this book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. It consists of two parts: the first section providing a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.

Black & Decker Codes for Homeowners

Author(s)/Editor(s): Bruce A. Barker | Size: 77 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Cool Springs Press | Year: 2015 | pages: 240 | ISBN: 1591869064

You don't need to be an expert to assess your house's codes - you just need this guide.

What is the proper clearance for an egress window? Does flexible duct have to be supported every four feet or five? Can vent pipe terminations be located near operable doors and windows? The difference between a code-compliant fixture and an egregious violation is often smaller than you think. You may have friends, family, or neighbors who claim to know, but how can you be sure? Is it worth taking their advice against future violations, fees, and fixes?

The completely updated Codes for Homeowners is here to help. Written by International Residential Codes, certified home inspector Bruce Barker, this third edition of Codes for Homeowners is current with most national codes in force for the period of 2015 through 2017.

Based on his decades of experience, Inspector Bruce Barker has winnowed down the massive heap of codes in force to only those that a single-family homeowner is likely to encounter. Building codes, electrical codes, plumbing codes, and mechanical (HVAC) codes are shown and described in everyday, easy-to-understand language.

This third edition includes all of the great information in the first version but is updated to reflect any changes to codes, including the
• 2014 National Electrical Code
• 2015 Universal Plumbing Code
• 2015 International Residential Code.

PCM-Enhanced Building Components
An Application of Phase Change Materials in Building Envelopes and Internal Structures

Author(s)/Editor(s): Jan Kosny | Size: 6,0 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Springer | Year: 2015 | pages: 271 | ISBN: 3319142852

Presenting an overview of the use of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) within buildings, this book discusses the performance of PCM-enhanced building envelopes. It reviews the most common PCMs suitable for building applications, and discusses PCM encapsulation and packaging methods. In addition to this, it examines a range of PCM-enhanced building products in the process of development as well as examples of whole-building-scale field demonstrations. Further chapters discuss experimental and theoretical analyses (including available software) to determine dynamic thermal and energy performance characteristics of building enclosure components containing PCMs, and present different laboratory and field testing methods. Finally, a wide range of PCM building products are presented which are commercially available worldwide. This book is intended for students and researchers of mechanical, architectural and civil engineering and postgraduate students of energy analysis, dynamic design of building structures, and dynamic testing procedures. It also provides a useful resource for professionals involved in architectural and mechanical-civil engineering design, thermal testing and PCM manufacturing.

Structural Optimization: Fundamentals and Applications

Author(s)/Editor(s): Uri Kirsch | Size: 9,0 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: Springer | Year: 1993 | pages: 302 | ISBN: 3540559191

This book was developed while teaching a graduate course at several universities in the United States. Europe and Israel. during the last two decades. The purpose of the book is to introduce the fundamentals and applications of optimum structural design. Much work has been done in this area recently and many studies have been published. The book is an attempt to collect together selected topics of this literature and to present them in a unified approach. It meets the need for an introductory text covering the basic concepts of modem structural optimization. A previous book by the author on this subject ("Optimum Structural Design". published by McGraw-Hill New York in 1981 and by Maruzen Tokyo in 1983). has been used extensively as a text in many universities throughout the world. The present book reflects the rapid progress and recent developments in this area. A major difficulty in studying structural optimization is that integration of concepts used in several areas. such as structural analysis. numerical optimization and engineering design. is necessary in order to solve a specific problem. To facilitate the study of these topics. the book discusses in detail alternative problem formulations. the fundamentals of different optimization methods and various considerations related to structural design. The advantages and the limitations of the presented approaches are illustrated by numerous examples.
