In this volume, top seismic experts and researchers from Europe and around the world, including the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) in the USA, present the most recent outcome of their work in experimental testing, as well as the results of the transnational access activities of external researchers who have used Europe's seven largest and most advanced seismic testing facilities in the framework of the Seismic Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies (SERIES) Project financed by the European Commission in its 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013). This includes EU’s largest reaction wall facility, EU's four largest shaking table laboratories and its two major centrifuges. The work presented includes state-of-the-art research towards the seismic design, assessment and retrofitting of structures, as well as the development of innovative research toward new fundamental technologies and techniques promoting efficient and joint use of the research infrastructures. The contents of this volume demonstrate the fruits of the effort of the European Commission in supporting research in earthquake engineering.

  Exploring Vancouver: The Architectural Guide
Posted by: ibg0203 - 08-31-2015, 03:05 PM - Forum: Architecture Books - Replies (1)

Exploring Vancouver: The Architectural Guide

Author(s)/Editor(s): Harold Kalman, Robin Ward | Size: 69 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Douglas & McIntyre | Year: 2012 | pages: 336 | ISBN: 1553658663

Vancouver's streetscapes and neighbourhoods have changed drastically in recent years. New buildings representing current architectural trends are mixing with and often replacing those of earlier eras and tastes, and a maturing architectrual melange is emerging. This book invites the reader to explore the city's continually evolving urban landscape in a highly readable, yet authoritative, guide to its architecture.

In this completely updated edition of Exploring Vancouver, with brand-new entries and accompanying photographs, Harold Kalman and Robin Ward have divided the city (including the North Shore, Richmond, Burnaby and New Westminster) into fourteen areas, selecting buildings and structures in these neighbourhoods that represent the best exakmples of the new and old architecture. Each area is preceded by an informative introduction that provides historical context for the entries that follow.

There are over 400 entries, each featuring a short description that combines architectural, historical and social commentary. The prose is lively as the authors consider the new and the old, the modest and the grand, the attractive and the not-so-attractive in a wide-ranging work that encompasses everything from heritage to "monster" homes.

Material Revolution 2: New Sustainable and Multi-Purpose Materials for Design and Architecture

Author(s)/Editor(s): Sascha Peters | Size: 223 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Birkhauser Verlag AG | Year: 2014 | pages: 220 | ISBN: 3038214760

Following the huge success of Material Revolution, this second volume addresses the rapid development of material research and presents materials new to the market since 2010.

The significance of sustainable and intelligent materials in design and architecture has increased enormously over the last two years. Numerous new products have been introduced to the market and designers’ thirst for knowledge about the sustainability of new material is as strong as ever, making a sequel to Material Revolution necessary. The new volume contains a similar system of classification but covers a completely different range of materials. There is a chapter dedicated solely to the criteria and factors of sustainable product design, as well as to innovative projects by designers and architects that work with new materials and technologies.

Rethinking the American City: An International Dialogue

Rethinking the American City: An International Dialogue

Author(s)/Editor(s): Miles Orvell and Klaus Benesch | Size: 11.8 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press | Year: 2013 | pages: 232 | ISBN: 081224561X

Whether struggling in the wake of postindustrial decay or reinventing themselves with new technologies and populations, cities have once again moved to the center of intellectual and political concern. Rethinking the American City brings together leading scholars from a range of disciplines to examine an array of topics that illuminate the past, present, and future of cities.

Rethinking the American City offers a lively and fascinating survey of contemporary thinking about cities in a transnational context. Utilizing an innovative format, each chapter opens with an iconic image and includes a brief and provocative essay on a single topic followed by an extended dialogue among all the essayists. Topics range from energy use, design, and digital media to transportation systems and housing to public art, urban ruins, and futurist visions. By engaging with key contemporary concerns—public and private space, sustainability, ethnic and racial divisions, and technology—this volume illuminates how global society has imagined American urban life.

Contributors: Klaus Benesch, Dolores Hayden, David M. Lubin, Malcolm McCullough, Jeffrey L. Meikle, David E. Nye, Miles Orvell, Andrew Ross, Mabel O. Wilson, Albena Yaneva.

A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture: 1960-2010
Posted by: ibg0203 - 08-30-2015, 03:54 PM - Forum: Architecture Books - No Replies

A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture: 1960-2010

Author(s)/Editor(s): Elie G. Haddad and David Rifkind | Size: 16.5 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Ashgate Pub Co | Year: 2014 | pages: 501 | ISBN: 140943981X

1960, following as it did the last CIAM meeting, signalled a turning point for the Modern Movement. From then on, architecture was influenced by seminal texts by Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi, and gave rise to the first revisionary movement following Modernism. Bringing together leading experts in the field, this book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. It consists of two parts: the first section providing a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.

Black & Decker Codes for Homeowners

Author(s)/Editor(s): Bruce A. Barker | Size: 77 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Cool Springs Press | Year: 2015 | pages: 240 | ISBN: 1591869064

You don't need to be an expert to assess your house's codes - you just need this guide.

What is the proper clearance for an egress window? Does flexible duct have to be supported every four feet or five? Can vent pipe terminations be located near operable doors and windows? The difference between a code-compliant fixture and an egregious violation is often smaller than you think. You may have friends, family, or neighbors who claim to know, but how can you be sure? Is it worth taking their advice against future violations, fees, and fixes?

The completely updated Codes for Homeowners is here to help. Written by International Residential Codes, certified home inspector Bruce Barker, this third edition of Codes for Homeowners is current with most national codes in force for the period of 2015 through 2017.

Based on his decades of experience, Inspector Bruce Barker has winnowed down the massive heap of codes in force to only those that a single-family homeowner is likely to encounter. Building codes, electrical codes, plumbing codes, and mechanical (HVAC) codes are shown and described in everyday, easy-to-understand language.

This third edition includes all of the great information in the first version but is updated to reflect any changes to codes, including the
• 2014 National Electrical Code
• 2015 Universal Plumbing Code
• 2015 International Residential Code.
