The intention of this book is to help to develop an appreciation for observation and learning about the designed environment through freehand drawing. By observing  we consider the designed, and by extension, the natural environment carefully with a critical and inquisitive eye.

Dear CivilEAns,
I have been using windows 8.1 on a 64 bit machine until recently when i installed the latest windows 10 (Enterprise edition). To my surprise (may be i should give it more time), the internet response, browsing speed, has reduced drastically. Everything is taking forever, opening pages! Anyone experiencing the same?

Design of SHS welded joints

  • Author(s): Corus - Structural & Conveyance Business

  • DOI: N.A.
  • Size: 0.29 MB
  • Quality: Original preprint

  • Abstract: In construction with structural hollow sections the members are generally welded directly to each other and, as a result, member sizing has a direct effect on both the joint capacity and the cost of fabrication. In order to obtain a technically secure, economic and architecturally pleasing structure, both the architect and design engineer must, from the very beginning, be aware of the effects that their design decisions will have on the joint capacity, the fabrication, assembly and the erection of the structure.
Structural hollow sections have a higher strength to weight ratio than open section profiles such as I-, H- and L- sections. They also require a much smaller weight of protection material, whether this is a fire protection or corrosion coating, because of their lower external area.
A properly designed steel construction using structural hollow sections will nearly always be lighter in terms of material weight than a similar construction made with open section profiles and, although structural hollow sections are more expensive than open section profiles on a per tonne basis, the overall weight saving of steel and protective coatings will very often result in a much more cost effective construction.
This publication has been produced to show how the joint capacity of staticaly loaded joints can be calculated and how it can be affected by both the geometric layout and the sizing of the members.

SHS Welding

Welding represents the major method by which structural hollow sections are joined. When considering welding, the most essential requirement is that the deposited weld should have mechanical properties not less than the minima specified for the sections being joined.
Welding is a subject which encompasses the materials, types of joint, welding conditions/positions and the required quality or mechanical properties of the finished joint. The recommendations made in this publication are thus of guidance towards good practice and should be used in conjunction with other standards, especially EN 1011*: Welding - Recommendations for welding of metallic materials, ENV 1090 and EN 29692.

Concrete is currently enjoying enormous popularity with planners and builders thanks to the vast potential inherent in its load-bearing capacity and its diverse properties and surface characteristics. This publication focuses not just on the design and construction of concrete load-bearing structures, but also especially on concrete's material characteristics and thus on the haptic and sensual side of this material.
