Primarily designed and constructed to resist outwardly directed loads imposed on the foundation of a structure, anchor plates play an important role in the design of structures (including seawalls, transmission towers, tunnels, buried pipelines, and retaining walls). Design and Construction of Soil Anchor Plates focuses on the various theories based on the design and construction techniques of anchor plates in soil mechanics. The focus of this reference is on design methods, theories, and procedures for constructing permanent or temporary ground anchors and anchored systems. Topics include: General Requirements of Vertical Anchor Plates and Design Criteria, Estimation of Ultimate Capacity in Vertical Anchor Plates, General Requirements of Vertical Anchor Plates and Design Criteria, Type and Length of Inclined Anchor Plates, Early Theories on Anchor Plates in Multi-Layers Soil, and Basic Theories on Passive Pressure in Vertical Anchor Plates. With this reference, researchers and designers will find a valuable guide to the various theories, techniques, and equations for anchor design.

Dynamic Analysis of Non-Linear Structures by the Method of Statistical Quadratization

Introduction As offshore oil production moves into deeper water, compliant structural systems are becoming increasingly important. Examples of this type of structure are tension leg platfonns (TLP's), guyed tower platfonns, compliant tower platfonns, and floating production systems. The common feature of these systems, which distinguishes them from conventional jacket platfonns, is that dynamic amplification is minimized by designing the surge and sway natural frequencies to be lower than the predominant frequencies of the wave spectrum. Conventional jacket platfonns, on the other hand, are designed to have high stiffness so that the natural frequencies are higher than the wave frequencies. At deeper water depths, however, it becomes uneconomical to build a platfonn with high enough stiffness. Thus, the switch is made to the other side of the wave spectrum. The low natural frequency of a compliant platfonn is achieved by designing systems which inherently have low stiffness. Consequently, the maximum horizontal excursions of these systems can be quite large. The low natural frequency characteristic of compliant systems creates new analytical challenges for engineers. This is because geometric stiffness and hydrodynamic force nonlinearities can cause significant resonance responses in the surge and sway modes, even though the natural frequencies of these modes are outside the wave spectrum frequencies. High frequency resonance responses in other modes, such as the pitch mode of a TLP, are also possible.

ASHRAE Design Guide for Tall, Supertall, and Megatall Building Systems

ASHRAE Design Guide for Tall, Supertall, and Megatall Building Systems

Size: 14 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Year: 2015 | pages: 228 | ISBN: 1936504979 |

The Guide to Meeting the Challenges of Tall Buildings Tall buildings present unique and formidable challenges to architects and engineers because of their size, location in major urban areas, and the multiple, complex occupancies they often contain. ASHRAE Design Guide for Tall, Supertall, and Megatall Building Systems is a unique reference for owners; architects; and mechanical, structural, and electrical engineers as well as other specialized consultants involved in designing systems for these buildings. Expanded since ASHRAE's previous guide on the topic in 2004, this new design guide covers not only tall buildings (taller than 300 ft [91m]) but now also addresses supertall (taller than 984 ft [300 m]) and megatall (taller than 1968 ft [600 m]) buildings, with a broadened scope and updated content that reflects current standards and industry practices. This guide not only focuses on the efforts of designers of the HVAC systems but also addresses the importance of the design team and their collective efforts and concerns that are the critical elements in determining the ultimate solutions to the project needs of a tall building. This guide addresses design issues for tall commercial buildings, which are very often mixed use, with low-level retail, office floors, residential floors, and hotel floors. Also included are appendices with examples of stack effect and wind pressure for four representative climates, energy analysis examples, and HVAC design criteria and a systems description for a multiple-tenant office building

In Detail: Building Simply

Author(s)/Editor(s): Christian Schittich | Size: 52 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Year: 2001 | pages: 176

In a time of loud gestures and ostentation unpretentious buildings, which have been reduced to the essentials with no superfluous decoration, are soothing in their purity. This new volume in the series In Detail demonstrates the breadth and complexity of the issues involved in building simply, from functional and economic demands, through ecological and energy-related aspects, to design and construction requirements. "Building Simply" can be read and applied in many ways. In the face of the sheer wealth of possibilities available today and the ever quicker changes in design and style, it is a creative process which does justice to the nature and quality of the materials used and gives rise to unique projects through an economy of means and resources. The project section documents a comprehensive range of international examples, from simple wooden bridges, to pavilions, residential buildings, workshops, and warehouses.
