Advances in Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction and Flow Simulation:

Author(s)/Editor(s): Yuri Bazilevs | Size: 21 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: birkhausser | Year: 2016 | pages: 500 | ISBN: 3319408259

This contributed volume celebrates the work of Tayfun E. Tezduyar on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The articles it contains were born out of the Advances in Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction and Flow Simulation (AFSI 2014) conference, also dedicated to Prof. Tezduyar and held at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan on March 19-21, 2014. The contributing authors represent a group of international experts in the field who discuss recent trends and new directions in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI). Organized into seven distinct parts arranged by thematic topics, the papers included cover basic methods and applications of CFD, flows with moving boundaries and interfaces, phase-field modeling, computer science and high-performance computing (HPC) aspects of flow simulation, mathematical methods, biomedical applications, and FSI. Researchers, practitioners, and advanced graduate students working on CFD, FSI, and related topics will find this collection to be a definitive and valuable resource.

High-Performance and Specialty Fibers: Concepts, Technology and Modern Applications of Man-Made Fibers for the Future

Size: 19 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: SPRINGER | Year: 2016 | pages: 451 | ISBN: 4431552022

This book reviews the key technologies and characteristics of the modern man-made specialty fibers mainly developed in Japan. Since the production of many low-cost man-made fibers shifted to China and other Asian countries, Japanese companies have focused on production of high-quality, high-performance super fibers as well as highly functionalized fibers so-called ‘Shin-gosen’. ZylonTM and DyneemaTM manufactured by Toyobo, TechnoraTM produced by Teijin, and VectranTM developed by Kuraray are those examples of super fibers. Carbon fibers ToraycaTM from Toray have occupied the most advanced high-performance application area. Various types of polyester fibers having design-shaped cross-sections and special fiber morphologies and those showing specific physico-chemical properties have also been developed to acquire a high-value textile market of the world.

This book describes how these high-tech fibers have been developed and what aspects are the most important in each fiber based on its structure-property relationship. Famous specialists both in industry and academia are responsible for the contents, explaining the design concepts and the special technologies for the production of these special fibers. For university teachers and students, this volume is an excellent textbook that elucidates the basic concepts of modern fibers. At the same time, researchers, both in academia and industry, will find a comprehensive overview of recent man-made fibers.

This publication, presenting the most easily understandable general survey of specialty man-made fibers to date, is dedicated to the 70th-anniversary of the Society of Fiber Science and Technology, Japan.

The New Space: Movement and Experience in Viennese Modern Architecture

The New Space: Movement and Experience in Viennese Modern Architecture

Author(s)/Editor(s): Christopher Long, | Size: 11 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Year: 2016 | pages: 256 | ISBN: 0300218281

Scholars have long stressed the problem of ornament and expression when considering Viennese modernism. By the first decade of the 20th century, however, the avant-garde had shifted its focus from the surface to the interior. Adolf Loos (1870–1933), together with Josef Frank (1885–1967) and Oskar Strnad (1879–1935), led this generation of architects to interpret modernism through culture and lifestyle. They were interested in the experience of architectural space: how it could be navigated, inhabited, and designed to reflect the modern way of life while also offering respite from it.

The New Space traces the theoretical conversation about space carried out in the writings and built works of Loos, Frank, and Strnad over four decades. The three ultimately explored what Le Corbusier would later—independently—term the architectural promenade. Lavishly illustrated with new photography and architectural plans, this important book enhances our understanding of the development of modernism and of architectural theory and practice.

Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow

Author(s)/Editor(s): Sukas V. Patankar | Size: 25 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Year: 1980 | pages: 197 | ISBN: 0070487405

This book focuses on heat and mass transfer, fluid flow, chemical reaction, and other related processes that occur in engineering equipment, the natural environment, and living organisms. Using simple algebra and elementary calculus, the author develops numerical methods for predicting these processes mainly based on physical considerations. Through this approach, readers will develop a deeper understanding of the underlying physical aspects of heat transfer and fluid flow as well as improve their ability to analyze and interpret computed results.

  SOLIDWORKS: Weldments in Assemblies (2016)

SOLIDWORKS: Weldments in Assemblies (2016)
  • Language: English
  • Format: mp4
  • Duration: 3h:44mn
  • Size: 855 MB
  • Quality: Not Specified

A large structure can be challenging to build, but it can be done. In this course, you'll learn to use Reference Line-Sketch Block method and Solid Body part modeling techniques to bolt together a power line tower. Software required: SOLIDWORKS.

Creating large structures from the part level up to an assembly can be a challenge. If the structure has uncommon angles or needs to change size or shape, then every part needs to be individually changed, too, which may be time-consuming and error-prone. In this course, SOLIDWORKS: Weldments in Assemblies, you will learn how to apply SolidWorks Weldments in a multibody part file referencing various forms of sketch reference geometry in the modeling of a power line tower leg. First, you'll learn how to import a design sketch. After that, you'll learn how to apply new weldment profiles and how to modify your existing model. Finally, you'll wrap up the course learning about inserting weldments and how you cut lists into a drawing. By the end of this course, you'll have the skills required to make to quickly and efficiently use design sketches to drive the geometry of your models. Software required: SOLIDWORKS.

The Thika Highway Improvement Project: Changes in the Peri-Urban Northern Nairobi

The Thika Highway Improvement Project: Changes in the Peri-Urban Northern Nairobi Metropolitan Region

Author(s)/Editor(s): Prof. Dr. Susanne Heeg & Dr. Veit Bachmann | Size: 7.3 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Springer Gabler | Year: 2014 | pages: 173 | ISBN: 9783658045388 ;9783658045395

Theory and practice of high-capacity infrastructure projects are the major focus in the development of countries in the Global South. Aiming at a more fine-grained understanding of such projects, Renard Teipelke studies the Thika Highway Improvement Project (THIP) and its outcomes in the peri-urban Northern Nairobi Metropolitan Region. The THIP is a large transportation infrastructure project that expanded the dual carriageway Thika Road into an eight-lane highway from 2008 until 2012. Based on a strategic mix of methodological approaches, such as interviews with experts in Kenya, literature research and field visits, the 'black box' THIP is opened up. In the empirical analysis, the project's idea, its design, and its implementation are studied. It is concluded that the project's outcomes are ambivalent - partly living up to the expectations of THIP proponents but not resulting in shared benefits for all concerned stakeholders due to flaws in managing the development in this peri-urban transport corridor area, thereby fitting into the Kenyan context of politics and planning.
