Soft capacitive sensor for structural health monitoring of large-scale systems

Soft capacitive sensor for structural health monitoring of large-scale systems

Author: S. Laflamme | Size: 1.5 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: wiley | Year: 2010 | pages: 11

Structural integrity of infrastructures can be preserved if damage is diagnosed, localized, and repaired in
time. During the past decade, there has been a considerable effort to automate the process of structural
health monitoring, which is complicated by the inherent large size of civil structures. Hence, a need has
arisen to develop new approaches that enable more effective health monitoring.
In this paper, a new sensing technique for damage localization on large civil structures is proposed.
Specifically, changes in strain are detected using a capacitance sensor built with a soft, stretchable dielectric
polymer with attached stretchable metal film electrodes. A change in strain causes a measurable change in
the capacitance of the sensor, which can be directly monitored when the sensor is fixed to a structure.
The proposed method is shown here to permit an accurate detection of cracks. The proposed system
deploys a layer of dielectric polymer on the surface of a structural element, and regularly monitors any
change in capacitance, giving in turn information about the structural state. The smart material is
composed of inexpensive silicone elastomers, which make the monitoring system a promising application
for large surfaces. Results from tests conducted on small-scale specimens showed that the technology is
capable of detecting cracks, and tests conducted on large-size specimens demonstrated that several sensor
patches organized on a sensor sheet are capable of localizing a crack. The sensor strain also exhibits a high
correlation with the loss of stiffness

Design methods of integral-lift tubular steel scaffolds for high-rise building construction

Author: F. Yue | Size: 1 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: wiley | Year: 2010 | pages: 10

In this paper, we discuss the design and calculation methods of integral-lift scaffolds under condition of
operating, climbing up/down and falling. Dead loads, construction live loads and wind loads for integral-lift
scaffolds are given in this paper. The key factors such as additional load factor κ are introduced and defi ned
for recommendation as well. Load and resistance factor design method based on probability theory is
introduced for the design of the main load-bearing structures. Herein, the additional partial safety factor
of material strength γ ′
m is introduced specifi cally for scaffolding frames which are often frequently reused
under poor outdoor conditions. Some important checking methods proposed specifi cally for integral-lift
scaffolds such as checking of anti-slide strength of couplers and anti-overturning analyses are also presented. Meanwhile, allowable strength design method is suggested in the design of the lifting equipments,
suspending rods and slings. The proposed methods in this paper will be useful guidelines for safe design
of integral-lift scaffolds.

Analysis of shear wall structures of variable cross section
Posted by: amritarao - 02-24-2013, 06:24 AM - Forum: Journals, Papers and Presentations - No Replies

Analysis of shear wall structures of variable cross section

Author: Jacek Wdowick | Size: 1 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: wiley | Year: 2010 | pages: 15

A method has been proposed for the analysis of three-dimensional shear wall and shear core assemblies
having stepwise changes in the cross section. The analysis is based on a variant of the continuous connection
method. In the continuous approach, the connecting beams are replaced by equivalent continuous connections. The differential equation systems for shear wall structure segments of constant cross section are
uncoupled by orthogonal eigenvectors. The solution matches the boundary conditions of the upper and lower
parts of the wall at the plane of contiguity, at which an abrupt change in cross section occurs. This yields a
system of linear equations, which enable the determination of the integration constants. The correctness
and effi ciency of the proposed method are illustrated by its application to the analysis of plane and threedimensional shear wall systems of variable cross section

Elementary Continuum Mechanics for Everyone: With Applications to Structural Mechanic

Elementary Continuum Mechanics for Everyone: With Applications to Structural Mechanics

Author: Esben Byskov | Size: 20.7 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: Springer | Year: 2013 | pages: 623 | ISBN: 9789400757653

The book opens with a derivation of kinematically nonlinear 3-D continuum mechanics for solids. Then the principle of virtual work is utilized to derive the simpler, kinematically linear 3-D theory and to provide the foundation for developing consistent theories of kinematic nonlinearity and linearity for specialized continua, such as beams and plates, and finite element methods for these structures. A formulation in terms of the versatile Budiansky-Hutchinson notation is used as basis for the theories for these structures and structural elements, as well as for an in-depth treatment of structural instability.

Seismic Retrofit Training For Building Contractors & Inspectors

Author: Ariel Babikian | Size: 8 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Year: 2009 | pages: 237

This course describes retrofit methods for light wood frame buildings that have structural weaknesses for resisting earthquakes. The training focuses on understanding how these retrofit methods work and how to install them. It also shows how to avoid making typical retrofitting errors. This course is not intended to teach you how to design a retrofit, but rather how to implement one. Much of this information is also useful for other types of work, such as the construction of new houses or apartment buildings.
