This course describes retrofit methods for light wood frame buildings that have structural weaknesses for resisting earthquakes. The training focuses on understanding how these retrofit methods work and how to install them. It also shows how to avoid making typical retrofitting errors. This course is not intended to teach you how to design a retrofit, but rather how to implement one. Much of this information is also useful for other types of work, such as the construction of new houses or apartment buildings.

Static Cone to Compute Static Settlement over Sand
by John H. Schmertmann, M.ASCE, (Prof. of Civ. Engrg., Univ. of Florida, Gainesville, FL)
Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, Vol. 96, No. 3, May/June 1970, pp. 1011-1043
Abstract:
At least two methods for using static cone data to predict settlement exist and have received extensive use—those of Terzaghi-Peck-Meyerhof and Buisman-DeBeer. Another method is presented in this paper. All three methods are then applied to 16 test cases involving either actual foundations, or plate load tests, with measured settlements. The proposed method simplifies calculations without sacrificing conservatism, yet appears most accurate over the full scope of the available test cases. These involve foundation widths of 2 ft to 184 ft. The key feature of the new method is that a single distribution of a strain influence factor is assumed for all cases. This method eliminates the need to compute the intermediate parameter of change in vertical stress with depth below a shallow footing. Also presented is a new correlation between static cone-bearing capacity and sand compressibility. Compressibility was measured in-situ by a special screw-plate form of plate-bearing load test. New data are included for the correlation between the static cone-bearing capacity and SPT blow count values in sands.
by John H. Schmertmann, F.ASCE, Phillip R. Brown, M.ASCE, and John Paul Hartman, M.ASCE
Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, Vol. 104, No. 8, August 1978, pp. 1131-1135
Abstract: Studies by the writers have added further insight to the Schmertmann strain factor method for the prediction of settlement over sand. The writers now make suggestions for several modifications to the method that should usually result in improved vertical strain distribution and settlement predictions under long footings.

Structural walls are one of the most commonly used reinforced concrete seismic resisting systems. In mid-rise and taller buildings, walls are typically placed at the core of the building to frame elevators and/or stairs. As a result, core walls often have a flanged configuration with coupling beams linking the flanged walls and providing access to elevators, stairs or other elements located within the core walls. A research study sponsored by the National Science Foundation through the NEES research program, with supplemental funding provided by the Charles Pankow Foundation, was undertaken to investigate the seismic response of core wall systems. The study included integrated experimental and analytical research on planar, coupled and C-shaped walls. The talk will present research related to all three wall configurations. Experimental and analytical results will be presented with an eye towards specific design recommendations. The experimental data generated as part of the current study were supplemented with data from prior research on RC walls and a large database of walls responding in flexure was developed. The results were used to evaluate common modeling procedures for walls using nonlinear beam-column elements. As walls are more susceptible to compression damage and may fail in a compression damage mode, specific recommendations for the regularization of the constitutive models are made. Regularized nonlinear models were used to investigate the earthquake response and collapse probability, per FEMA P695, of walls designed using current code procedures. Recommendations are made for improved design procedures to ensure desired failure modes and collapse probabilities are achieved. In addition, the research findings were used to develop seismic performance evaluation methods including fragility functions to distinguish between the performance of planar, non-symmetric and symmetric flanged walls.

A simple image-based method for measuring plane strain fields on the surface of specimens in earthquake
engineering experiments was developed. This method integrated camera calibration, stereo triangulation,
image metric rectification and image template matching techniques to develop a method that was costeffective, easy to apply and provided a satisfactory level of measurement accuracy. A zero-strain test
conducted using this method showed that the measurement accuracy achieved was 0.04 pixels. That is, the
relative displacement accuracy achieved was 0.005 mm and the strain accuracy was 0.001. This level of
accuracy was achieved using eight-mega-pixel digital cameras to measure a 17 cm×28 cm measurement
region. Cracks that were 0.012 mm wide were identified in the concrete by examining the displacement
fields calculated through the application of this image-based method in an RC-wall experiment

Hi,
I think there should be a " Latest Thread List " ( like latest post list ) which should show only latest threads ( last 15 threads). The point is that new thread means that something new is shared ( most of the time this is true). But I am seeing these days that most of the people are just posting the mirror links for something which is already in the forum and as a result new threads get hidden in that latest post list and don't get attention of the users. It's my observation ( I may be wrong ) that user log in probably once a day, go directly to " Latest Posts " list, see the last 15 posts and that's it. If something valuable has been shared and it is now hidden under that list then it won't get due attention.
MathType is a powerful interactive tool for Windows and Macintosh that lets you create mathematical notation for word processing, web pages, desktop publishing, presentations, and for TeX, LaTeX, and MathML documents.
Features:
More Symbols, Templates, and Fonts
- More Fonts: MathType has hundreds more symbols and templates than Equation Editor. Beside our exclusive Euclid™ math fonts, you can also make use of the 1000's of math symbols in fonts already on your computer, as well as math fonts you can download from the Internet.
- Find Symbols: MathType's Insert Symbol dialog allows you to explore the available symbols and insert them with a click or keystroke.
Works with Many Applications:
- Many Applications: In addition to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, use MathType to add equations to QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign layouts, Excel spreadsheets, HTML pages, and many more applications and document types.
- Works with Wikipedia: Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia, contains 1000's of pages with mathematical equations. Once you do your research on Wikipedia, you can copy the relevant equations for use in your own work. You can also use MathType to author new equations for Wikipedia.
- Many Ways to Work: MathType can add equations to virtually any application that has an Insert Object command or into which you can paste or drag a graphic.
Two Ways to Create Equations:
- Point-and-Click Editing with Automatic Formatting: Equations can be created quickly by choosing templates from MathType's palettes and typing into their empty slots. MathType applies mathematical spacing rules automatically as you type.
- Type TeX or LaTeX: If you already know the TeX typesetting language, you can enter equations quickly using MathType's TeX input mode. TeX editing can be mixed with point-and-click editing so you get the best of both worlds. You can also paste in equations from existing TeX documents.
