Geographic Information Systems for Geoscientists: Volume 13: Modelling with GIS

Author(s)/Editor(s): G.F. Bonham-Carter | Size: 35 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Pergamon | Year: 1995 | pages: 416 | ISBN: 0080424201

This valuable reference book is unique in its coverage of examples from the geological sciences, many centred on applications to mineral exploration. The underlying principles of GIS are stressed and emphasis placed on the analysis and modelling of spatial data with applications to site selection and potential mapping. The book commences with a definition of GIS and describes a case study of mapping mineral potential. The ways in which spatial data are organized with models (raster, vector, relational) are discussed and data structures, such as quadtrees and topological structures are introduced. Data input including digitizing, geographic projections and conversions is covered together with output (visualization, representation of colour and spatial query). Spatial data transformations are dealt with thoroughly and attention is paid to map analysis and modelling as related to single maps, map pairs and multiple maps respectively. Methods of quantifying the associations between pairs of maps are emphasized. Finally, examples of landfill site selection and mineral potential mapping illustrate the application of map algebra for combining maps and tables with models, employing Boolean logic, index weighting, fuzzy logic and probability methods such as weights of evidence. There is an extensive glossary of terms, and references accompany each chapter. Contains 40 pages of colour illustrations.

Free private server cloud email collaboration
Posted by: LiviuM - 12-13-2016, 07:12 PM - Forum: Free Discussion - Replies (1)

Hello,

I've spent this year some time, all my time :), learning and working with linux and all that stuff.
After trying various options I finally have some conclusions and I believe it's worth mentioning those here.
So this thread is about what options are there for a small company server (less than 50 users, document management, file sharing, email, ftp, http, webdav, data backup, revision history and web access to documents pc tablet mobile browser).
All software mentioned is free for commercial use, you pay for hardware (if required), know-how if needed, internet and electric power.

Router: OPNSense or pfSense (BSD based, both work very well and are the most stable OS I've ever seen in my life) OPNSense has PPTP which is the most supported and easy to setup VPN option. The have proxy server as well as filtering options.

Server (alternative to Windows Server primary domain controller (PDC) and email server): Zentyal (Ubuntu based) or ClearOS (CentOS based) or UCS Univention Corporate Server (it's a click to install solution, it has Agorum and Open-Xchange)

Cloud like file sharing: OwnCloud (Nextcloud) or Seafile or Pydio

Project Collaboration (alternative to Microsoft SharePoint): Alfresco or Agorum Core

Storage: preferably ZFS, can be on main server Zentyal or ClearOS or a different machine running FreeNAS or whatever alternative, don't use Btrfs it's still under development.

Virtual machine hypervisor: VirtualBox on Linux main server or Proxmox on baremetal.

Remote desktop connection in browser: Guacamole

Computer inventory and software deployment: GLPI (has some sort of project management) or OCS INVENTORY-NG

Not working yet: BIMserver

To consider:
Open-Xchange (collaboration)
Zimbra

Minimum setup: one computer with 16-64 GB ram running Proxmox and multiple vm (virtual machines) and lxc (linux containers).
Zentyal doesn't run in linux container but Owncloud, Alfresco, GLPI will.

Recommended minimum setup:
a) 3 independent computers: router (pfSense), storage (NAS), server (Zentyal+Agorum+OwnCloud). And a backup pc running proxmox with all 3 roles in vm.
b) 2 computers running Proxmox as nodes having 3 vms the router, server and storage.

What to expect: hardware failure (processor, hdd, mainboard, PSU, networkcard, UPS) for all and software failure for the server (Zentyal, Agorum, OwnCloud).
ClearOS proved to be more stable, most issues happen due to Tomcat server needed for Alfresco or Agorum.

Alternatives to Proxmox: vMware vSphere and XenServer (sadly have various limitations)

To compare let's say entry level Synology or qNap (Atom, 2gb ram, 4x1GB nic) is about 700$ up to 2000$ the system only, no hdd, can run 0 win 7 vms.

VS very powerful and cheap old hardware on ebay:

Mellanox ConnectX-2 10Gigabit NIC 10GBe 30$
3m SFP Cisco Cable 20$
Refurbished switch Quanta LB4M 10GB 48x1GB + 2x10GB SFP+ 120$ (in case the existing switch doesn't have SFP+)
Chenbro 1U 2x Xeon Eight Core E5-2650 64GB (can run 12 win7 vms) 400$
or
Chenbro 1U 2x Xeon Eight Core E5-2650 128GB (has 16 cores and can run 20 win7 vms) 650$

n recent decades nanotechnology has developed into a highly multidisciplinary topic, drawing from a number of fields such as physics, materials science, biomedicine, and different engineering disciplines. The success of nanoscience- and nanotechnology-related research and products is connected with the technological exploitation of size effects in structures and materials and is, therefore, related to its impact on the society of the future.

This most recent trend has been taken up here and represents the main focus of this book applied to carbon-based materials, including nanocrystalline diamond, aerogels, and carbon nanotubes. The book compiles and details cutting-edge research, and several applications are described within the field of energy, microelectronics, and biomedicine. Beyond that, a perspective is given including a diversity of industrial applications and market opportunities for C-based nanoscale materials and devices in the future.

Many of our daily-life problems can be written in the form of an optimization problem. Therefore, solution methods are needed to solve such problems. Due to the complexity of the problems, it is not always easy to find the exact solution. However, approximate solutions can be found.

The theory of the best approximation is applicable in a variety of problems arising in nonlinear functional analysis and optimization. This book highlights interesting aspects of nonlinear analysis and optimization together with many applications in the areas of physical and social sciences including engineering. It is immensely helpful for young graduates and researchers who are pursuing research in this field, as it provides abundant research resources for researchers and post-doctoral fellows. This will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone who works in the field of applied mathematics, economics and engineering.

Rainfall-Runoff Modelling In Gauged And Ungauged Catchments

Author(s)/Editor(s): Thorsten Wagener, Hoshin V Gupta, Howard S Wheater | Size: 14.8 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Imperial College Press | Year: 2010 | pages: 332 | ISBN: 1860944663

This important monograph is based on the results of a study on the identification of conceptual lumped rainfall-runoff models for gauged and ungauged catchments. The task of model identification remains difficult despite decades of research. A detailed problem analysis and an extensive review form the basis for the development of a Matlab® modelling toolkit consisting of two components: a Rainfall-Runoff Modelling Toolbox (RRMT) and a Monte Carlo Analysis Toolbox (MCAT). These are subsequently applied to study the tasks of model identification and evaluation. A novel dynamic identifiability approach has been developed for the gauged catchment case. The theory underlying the application of rainfall-runoff models for predictions in ungauged catchments is studied, problems are highlighted and promising ways to move forward are investigated. Modelling frameworks for both gauged and ungauged cases are developed. This book presents the first extensive treatment of rainfall-runoff model identification in gauged and ungauged catchments.

From Leonardo da Vinci to Louis Kahn, the world's great designers and architects have used the observation and drawing of real objects to inform and inspire visionary constructions. This book prepares students of architecture and design to carry on a similar dialogue between their perceptions of the physical world and their understanding of the elements of design. It instills an understanding of the basic principles of drawing that are universal to all designdisciplines-mass, volume, form, contour, texture, shadow, and more-as it explores the knowledge, rational thought, and analysis that design professionals rely on to create successful drawings. This combination of technique, theory, and analysis equips the designer with a powerful set of tools, crucial to both the creative process and the successful career.
