Book Description:
Higher-Order Finite Element Methods provides an exhaustive survey of intrinsic techniques and practical implementation of higher-order finite element schemes. It addresses automatic hp-adaptivity in one and two spatial dimensions and includes up-to-date references to ongoing research related to automatic hp-adaptivity in 3D. The authors' discussion of suitable data structures and efficient linear solvers provides an excellent introduction to key, often neglected aspects of this class of methods. Avoiding heavy mathematical jargon where possible, the book is clear, comprehensive, and designed for both applied mathematicians and engineers who are interested in finite elements.

Reinforced Concrete: A Fundamental Approach by Edward G Nawy

Reinforced Concrete (A Fundamental Approach) Edward G.Nawy

• The new 2005 ACI 318-05 Code on Concrete Structures and the new International Building Code (IBC-2003) on Seismic Design of Structures, which introduced many changes to the current practice, are covered throughout the book.

• Updates on state-of-the-art developments include introducing students to the increased use of multi-story structures designed and built using reinforced and prestressed concrete masonry systems, not only reinforced concrete systems.

• Chapter 9, on the design of compressions members, saw a complete revamp to reflect the ACI 318-05 approach in the design of columns and to accommodate the new strength reduction factors. This includes a complete revision of the extensive design examples that cover both non-slender and slender compression members.

• Chapter 16, on seismic design of buildings, was significantly revised to comply with the major changes in both the ACI 318 Code and the IBC 2003 Code. Updates include replacing several tables with the newly adopted ones for seismic design of buildings in high seismicity zones.

• Concrete materials and the design of concrete mixtures for normal strength and high strength concretes receive comprehensive treatment in Chapters 3 and 4. Plus, a new section on provisions for environmental structures and durability has been added.

• Chapter 15, on the LRFD design of bridge deck structures, has been updated in accordance with the recent AASHTO 2004 and its 2003 supplements, reflecting the changes in the torsional and shear strain equations.

• An expanded section features examples on the strut-and-tie modeling for the design of deep reinforced concrete beams and corbels in accordance with the ACI 318-05 Appendix provisions for this method.

Overview :
In recent years building failures and the resulting lawsuits and awards for damages have frequently been in the news. The biggest headlines may have been reserved for structural failures and complete collapses. But we should not forget the less newsworthy failures such as leaky roofs, damp walls, dropped foundations and rotted timber.

Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Concrete Buildings
Volume 1

General Description:

In 1994, as part of the Proposition 122 Seismic Retrofit Practices Improvement Program, the Commission awarded the Applied Technology Council (ATC) a contract to develop a recommended methodology and commentary for the seismic evaluation and retrofit of existing concrete buildings (product 1.2). In 1995·the Commission awarded a second, related contract to ATC to expand the Product 1.2 effort to include effects of foundations on the seismic performance of existing concrete buildings (Product 1.3). The results of the two projects have been combined and are presented in this ATC-40 Report (also known as SSC-96-01). TV/o other reports recently published by the California Seismic Safety Commission, the Provisional Commentary for Seismic Retrofit (1994) and the Review ofSeismic Research Results on Existing Buildings (1994), are Products 1.1 and 3.1 of the Proposition 122 Program, respectively. These two previous reports provide the primary basis for the development of the recommended methodology and commentary contained in this document. . This document is organized into two volumes. Volume One contains the main body of the evaluation and retrofit methodology, presented in 13 chapters, with a glossary and a list of ref-erences, J1d~ volume contains all ofthe parts of the document required for the' evaluation and retrofit of btrildings. Volume Two consists of Appendices containing supporting materials related to the methodology: four example building case study reports, a cost effectiveness study related to the four building studies, and a review
of research on the effects of foundation conditions on the seismic performance of concrete
buildings.
