Learning through doing is the foundation of this book, which allows readers to explore case studies as well as expository material. The book provides a practical guide to the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear equations, differential equations, optimization problems, and eigenvalue problems. It treats standard problems and introduces important variants such as sparse systems, differential-algebraic equations, constrained optimization, Monte Carlo simulations, and parametric studies. Stability and error analysis is emphasized, and the MATLABA® algorithms are grounded in sound principles of software design and in the understanding of machine arithmetic and memory management.
Nineteen case studies allow readers to become familiar with mathematical modeling and algorithm design, motivated by problems in physics, engineering, epidemiology, chemistry, and biology. A website provides solutions to the challenges that are offered throughout the book and also supplies relevant MATLAB codes, derivations, and supplementary notes and slides.
Audience: This book is intended as a primary text for courses in numerical analysis, scientific computing, and computational science for advanced undergraduate and early graduate students. Physicists, chemists, biologists, earth scientists, astronomers, and engineers whose work involves numerical computing also will find the book useful as a reference and tool for self-study.

Gravel roads : maintenance and design manual
By Ken Skorseth
Publisher: U.S. Dept. of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration
Number Of Pages:
Publication Date: 2000
ISBN-10 / ASIN: B000115EM2
ISBN-13 / EAN:
There are over 1.6 million miles of unpaved roads (53% of all roads) in the United States. In some nations, the road network is predominantly unpaved and generally consists of gravel roads. This manual was developed with a major emphasis on the maintenance of gravel roads, including some basic design elements. Gravel roads are generally the lowest service provided to the traveling public and are usually considered greatly inferior to paved roads. Yet,in many rural regions, the volume of traffic is so low that paving and maintaining a paved road is not economically feasible. In many cases, gravel roads exist to provide a means of getting agricultural products in and out of farm fields, timber out of forests, or as access to remote areas such as campgrounds and lakes. Many gravel roads serve rural residents as well. Many of these roads will remain unpaved due to very low traffic volume and/or lack of funds to adequately improve the subgrade and base before applying pavement layer(s).In some countries, economic constraints mean gravel roads are the only type that can be provided.
The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for doing a better job of maintaining gravel roads. It is recognized that very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel maintenance has traditionally been

Slope stability analysis and stabilization: new methods and insight
By YM Cheng

ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780415421720
A number of methods currently exist for the analysis and design of slopes. This book provides a critical review of these and offers several more appropriate approaches for overcoming numerical convergence and the location of critical failure surfaces in two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases. New concepts in three-dimensional stability analysis, finite element analysis and the extension of slope stability problems to lateral earth pressure problems are also addressed. It gives helpful practical advice and design resources in the form of recommendations for good analysis and design practice, design charts and tables for the engineer. Limitations are detailed of both limit equilibrium and the finite element method in the assessment of the stability of a slope, and guidance is provided for assessing the fundamental assumptions and limitations of stability analysis methods and computer modelling. The book provides ample examples to illustrate how this range of problems should be dealt with. The final chapter touches on design and its implementation on site. The emphasis is on the transfer of the design to its physical implementation on site in a holistic way, taking full account of the latest developments in construction technology. Engineering and construction problems tend to be pigeonholed into different classes of problem such as slope stability, bearing capacity and earth pressure behind retaining structures. This is quite unnecessary. This book offers a unified approach, which is conceptually, practically and philosophically more satisfying.

Elementary Behaviour of Composite Steel and Concrete Structural Members
By Deric Oehlers, Mark A. Bradford
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
Number Of Pages: 280
Publication Date: 2000-02-14
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0750632690
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780750632690
This book is aimed at developing elementary analysis skills, familiarity and an intuitive feel for composite construction that is required by undergraduate and graduate students, and by structural engineers. It does not require a prior knowledge of advanced analysis and design techniques, and builds on simple concepts such as statics and the mechanics of materials. A topic is first introduced by a brief description, with numerous carefully-chosen examples forming an integral part of the main text. Working through the examples allows the reader to gain a full understanding of the subject, as a technique is illustrated by its application to designing new structures, or in the important area of assessing and upgrading existing structures.
The techniques described for the analysis of standard structures form a basis for understanding the way composite structures work, and these techniques are applied to many non-standard forms of composite construction that are not, or rarely, covered in national standards. The book is an essential purchase for all undergraduate and postgraduate students of structural/civil engineering and architecture, as well as all practising structural and civil engineers.
Covers practical applications not covered in codes, such as service ducts, splitting, upgrading existing structures and non-standard forms of composite construction
Topics are embellished by working through numerous unique and carefully-chosen examples that form an integral part of the subject material
Not orientated to specific codes, so that principles can be applied to any national design standard
