By Burt G. Look
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
Number Of Pages: 331
Publication Date: 2007-04-12
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0415430380

Providing easy access to key information, this practical handbook of properties for soils and rock presents key issues concerning geotechnical investigations, assessments and designs in a concise tabular format. The book is bridge between soil and rock mechanics theory and its application to practical engineering solutions. The initial chapters deal with the planning of the geotechnical investigation, the classification of the soil and rock properties and the tests commonly carried out. Later chapters demonstrate the reliability and correlations used to convert data in the interpretative and assessment phase of the project. The final chapters apply some of these concepts to geotechnical design.

Clay materials used in construction: engineering geology special publication
Geological Society of London | ISBN: 186239184X | 2006-02-01 | PDF | 552 pages | 17 Mb
Concluding the trilogy on geological materials in construction, this authoritative volume reviews many uses of clays, ranging from simple fills to sophisticated products. Comprehensive and international coverage is achieved by an expert team, including geologists, engineers and architects. Packed with information prepared for a wide readership, this unique handbook is also copiously illustrated. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Professor Sir Alec Skempton. Various definitions of 'clay' are explored. Clay mineralogy is described, plus the geological formation of clay deposits and their fundamental materials properties. World and British clay deposits are reviewed and explained. New compositional data are provided for clay formations throughout the stratigraphic column. Investigative techniques and interpretation are considered, ranging from site exploration to laboratory assessment of composition and engineering performance. Major civil engineering applications are addressed, including earthworks, earthmoving and specialized roles utilizing clays. Traditional earthen building is included and shown to dominate construction in places. Clay-based construction materials are detailed, including bricks, ceramics and cements. The volume also includes a comprehensive glossary.

Collin Gribble "Geology for Civil Engineers, 2nd Edition"
Published by E & FN Spon | September 1985 | ISBN : 0419160000 | PDF Format, 348 pages | English | 8.68 MB
In a major engineering project, a systematic exploration and investigation of a new site might be carried out and reported on by a consultant specialising in geology, geophysics or engineering (with a detailed knowledge of soil and rock mechanics). However, even when the services of a specialist consultant are employed, an engineer will still have overall supervision and responsibility for the project.
Therefore, the engineer must have enough understanding of geology to know how and when to use the expert knowledge of consultants, and to be able to read theiir reports intellegently, judge their reliability, and appreciate how the conditions described might effect the project.

The main purpose of this Guide is to provide a practical method for assessing the likely vibrational behaviour of floors in steel framed buildings. The subject of floor vibration is complex and consequently the Guide contains sections dealing with the current ‘state of the art’, the background to the proposed assessment methods and a commentary so that the designer may develop an appreciation of the phenomenon rather than apply the design method by rote.
