Handbookof Machine Foundations

P. SRINIVASULU
G. V. VAIDYANATHAN
Structural Engineering Research Centre
Madraa

Rapid industrialization of the country under the successive Five Year Plans involves the installation of machines of various types in industrial establishments. The design of foundations for such machines calls for specialized knowledge. Codes relating to machine
foundations provide only very generál guidance. There are hardly any works of reference which provide detailed information on different types of machine foundations. In the absence of such a manuál, widely varying practices are being followed. The effort of the authors of this book has been to present the principles of analysis, design and construction of machine foundations of different types in sufficient detail. To make the book self-contained, elements of structural dynamics are presented in Chapter 2. A feature of the book which the designers would specially welcome is the inclusion of numerical examples. A chapter each is devoted to the design of block and framed foundations. Vibration isolation and construction details have about received adequate attention. Readers of this handbook who are intimately concerned with machine foundations may perhaps like to write to the authors about case histories of "sick" foundations and corrective measures which in their experience have proved effective. Although a section on case histories has been included in Chapter 7, a separate chapter on such documented case histories would certainly enhance the value of this work.

Engineering Fluid Mechanics (Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications)

H. Yamaguchi, "Engineering Fluid Mechanics (Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications)"
Springer; 1 edition (April 16, 2008) | English | 1402067410 | 573 pages | PDF | 12.27 MB

This book is intended to serve as a unique and comprehensive textbook for scientists and engineers as well as advanced students in thermo-fluid courses. It provides an intensive monograph essential for understanding dynamics of ideal fluid, Newtonian fluid, non-Newtonian fluid and magnetic fluid. These distinct, yet intertwined subjects are addressed in an integrated manner. It starts with coherent treatment of fundamental continuum mechanics, with an emphasis on the intrinsic angular momentum, by which the concepts of ferrohydrodynamics are progressively built up, and serve as a foundation for later development. Flows of ideal and Newtonian fluids are followed by a detailed presentation of basic continuum equations for applications of fluid engineering, which cover the design and operations of various turbomachines, heat exchangers and flow elements. The study of the deformation and flow of matter, namely rheology, is discussed primarily with regard to the stresses generated during the flow of complex materials, which are represented by viscoelastic fluids. Throughout the book, the first priority is to illustrate the utilization of constitutive equations (relations) in order to facilitate an understanding of the physical flow phenomena and mechanisms. Moreover, it enables readers to classify flows and specific engineering problems, which can then be identified and formulated.

In order to make the book self-contained, many exercises and problems are provided for each chapter in addition to the numerous pedagogical aids that have been incorporated throughout. The intention is to facilitate the reader to compose their knowledge into a better understanding of both the theoretical and applicable aspects of fluid engineering.

An anecdote:
A person I know asked Jean, 'why did you write this book, you are giving away all your trade secrets'. And Jean replied to him something like this, 'in a couple of years everything in the book will be old news, the essence is to innovate in every new design'. Yet, even today alot of the staff in the book can not be found elsewhere.

PS: Specially for lamkin. Thank you for your efforts.

Water Environment Federation, "Clarifier Design: WEF Manual of Practice No. FD-8"

Written by some of the world's most knowledgeable authorities on wastewater clarification, Clarifier Design helps readers make fully informed decisions about this essential step in the wastewater cleansing process.

Contrasting traditional methods with the many leading-edge choices in clarifier design approaches, the text establishes criteria and protocols for decision-making. For potential buyers evaluating clarifier effectiveness for their particular situations, for vendors wanting to demonstrate the superiority of their designs, for designers creating new variations or products, for anyone who needs to compare the many types and configurations of clarifiers that are available and in use -- there is no better choice that than this manual from the Water Environment Federation.

Clarifier Design is the most complete and useful treatise available on wastewater clarification. Its demystifying explanations will help everyone approach the process and its technologies with more understanding, confidence -- and clarity.

please check is AS1170.1 for structural glass is in the list, please share, thanks.

The new glass design approach used in Australian standard, AS1288
Dr Ignatius Calderone, Director, Calderone and Associates Pty Ltd.

There is a trend for glass designers around the world to make reference to standards from other countries. Therefore, in order to avoid improper use of the new Australian standard, it is important that the rationale used and the limitations of the standards are well understood. This paper presents the methodology used in developing the new design charts used in the revised Australian Standard, AS1288, which was published on 16 January 2006. The change to ultimate limit state design in the Australian wind loading code necessitated the corresponding upgrading of the wind loading charts in AS1288. The new charts are also an improvement on the old charts, with the inclusion of criteria such as the aspect ratio and slenderness factor. Separate charts are given for each glass type and thickness. As well as covering the rationale behind the new ultimate limit state design stresses used in the new charts, comparisons are made with the previous Australian code requirements and other existing and draft international standards. These comparisons will highlight the dangers of improperly using a 50-year return wind loading with the new Australian design code, which is applicable to 1000-year return period wind loads.

please check the above code and kindly upload for sharing. thanks

  Architectural Drawings
Posted by: cocojo - 12-05-2009, 11:57 PM - Forum: Request - Replies (4)

Hello my fellow engineers,

I would like to request some architectural drawings for some highrise concrete/steel buildings.

I am a recent graduate from civil structural engineering program, so my friend and I want to work on some exercise project during our free time.

We want to model the drawings in SAP2000 or ETABs and then draw them on AutoCAD.

So, please post some architectural drawings of structure if you have any, thank you.
