I'm looking for sample design calculation notes on the design of pipe arch (elliptical), and arch shaped culverts in both (or) concrete and steel. I've read the previous topics on box culverts and have a solution formed for this type... However, I'm having difficulty analysing the above shapes with regard to soil loads acting on the structure (because of their shape) and the resulting bending moments and shear forces.
Also, I'm using GSA to model these structures and comfirm my calculations. How would you suggest modelling the soil strucure in open arch and pipe arch culverts.
I'm designing to British Standards but any relevant info would be great. I've searched everywhere online!
Numerical methods require extensive calculation, which is easily
accomplished using today's desktop computers. A number of books have been
written in which numerical methods are implemented using a specific
programming language, such as FORTRAN or C++. Most scientists and
engineers received some training in computer programming in their college days,
but they (or their computer) may no longer have the capability to write or run
programs in, for example, FORTRAN. This book shows how to implement
numerical methods using Microsoft Excel@, the most widely used spreadsheet
software package. Excel@ provides at least three ways for the scientist or
engineer to apply numerical methods to problems:
by implementing the methods on a worksheet, using worksheet formulas
by using the built-in tools that are provided within Excel
by writing programs, sometimes loosely referred to as macros, in Excel's
Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language.

This book is aimed at spreadsheet users who already have some familiarity with previous
versions of Microsoft Excel and who want an overview of the modifications
and new features being introduced with Microsoft Office 2007. The book is also
intended to be a practical guide to anyone wishing to update their Excel skills and
progress to the more advanced features of this essential spreadsheet application.

Hi All of you..........
Does any body have the Excel Sheet for calculating the Wind load According to EIA/TIA-222-F/G? This for the Tower and Masts.
If Yes Kindly Help me by giving that.
Building Information Modeling - A Strategic Implementation Guide
for Architects, Engineers, Constructors, and Real Estate Asset Managers
Building Information Modeling
Publisher: Wiley | English | 2009 | ISBN: 0470250038 | PDF | 216 Pages | 16 Mb
With this strategic guide to building information modeling (BIM), you’ll learn how to implement this new technology as part of a comprehensive systems approach to the design, construction, management, operation, maintenance, and use of buildings. The authors, among the leading experts and pioneers in BIM, show you how BIM supports more streamlined, integrated, and efficient business processes throughout the life cycle of buildings, from their initial conception through their eventual retirement or reuse. The result is better quality buildings, lower construction and operating costs, shorter project turnaround times, and a higher quality of building information to support better business decisions. Moreover, they set forth a plan for incorporating BIM into every organization’s existing workflows, enabling you to take full advantage of all the benefits that BIM offers.
ng how your organization can work with business partners and fit into the building life cycle in a BIM-enabled industry
Throughout the book, sample documents and figures help you better understand the principles of BIM and how it works in practice. In addition, first-hand accounts show you exactly how adopters of BIM have gained a competitive edge.
Architects, engineers, constructors, building owners, and facility managers can turn to this book to realize the full potential of BIM and radically improve the way buildings are designed, built, operated, and maintained.

Structural Analysis with the Finite Element Method
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS WITH THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD
Linear Statics
Volume 1 : The Basis and Solids
Eugenio Oñate
The two volumes of this book cover most of the theoretical and computational aspects of the linear static analysis of structures with the Finite Element Method (FEM). The content of the book is based on the lecture notes of a basic course on Structural Analysis with the FEM taught by the author at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain for the last 30 years.
Volume1 presents the basis of the FEM for structural analysis and a detailed description of the finite element formulation for axially loaded bars, plane elasticity problems, axisymmetric solids and general three dimensional solids. Each chapter describes the background theory for each structural model considered, details of the finite element formulation and guidelines for the application to structural engineering problems. The book includes a chapter on miscellaneous topics such as treatment of inclined supports, elastic foundations, stress smoothing, error estimation and adaptive mesh refinement techniques, among others. The text concludes with a chapter on the mesh generation and visualization of FEM results.
The book will be useful for students approaching the finite element analysis of structures for the first time, as well as for practising engineers interested in the details of the formulation and performance of the different finite elements for practical structural analysis.
