Chinese workers build 15-story hotel in just six days - ARK HOTEL

A construction crew in the south-central Chinese city of Changsha has completed a 15-story hotel in just six days. If nothing else, this remarkable achievement will stoke further complaints from American economic pundits that China's economy is far more accomplished than ours in tending to such basics as construction.

The work crew erected the hotel -- a soundproofed, thermal-insulated structure reportedly built to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake -- with all prefabricated materials. In other words, a crew of off-site factory workers built the sections, and their on-site counterparts arranged them on the foundation for the Ark project. Despite the frenetic pace of construction, no workers were injured -- and thanks to the prefab nature of the process, the builders wasted very few construction materials.

ISBN 0849301149
size of zip file: 12.7 mb

This book has evolved from over 30 years of teaching advanced seniors and first-term graduate students a core course on the application of the full-range field theory of deformable solids for analysis and design. It is presented to help teachers meet the challenges of leading students in their exciting discovery of the unifying field theories of elasticity and plasticity in a new era of powerful machine computation for students with little experimental experience and no exposure to drawing and graphic analysis. The intention is to concentrate on fundamental concepts, basic applications, simple problems yet unsolved, inverse strategies for optimum design, unanswered questions, and unresolved paradoxes in the hope that the enthusiasm of the past can be recaptured and that our continued fascination with the subject is made contagious.

This book is intended to meet the need for a general treatise on precast concrete, as the last relevant book on this subject was published in 1961. Since then there have been several publications dealing with particular parts of the subject which serve as useful back-up reading, but the precast concrete industry is complex and needs to be discussed in both general and particular terms over a large number of subject areas.

BS ISO 10332:2010 Non-destructive testing of steel tubes — Automated ultrasonic testing of seamless and welded (except submerged arc-welded) steel tubes for verification of hydraulic leak-tightness

This International Standard specifies requirements for automated ultrasonic shear-wave (generated by single element probes or the phased-array technique) testing of seamless and welded (except submerged arcwelded) steel tubes, for verification of hydraulic leak-tightness.
The testing technique is applied for the detection of predominantly longitudinal imperfections. Where applicable, Lamb-wave testing may be applied at the discretion of the manufacturer. This International Standard is applicable to the inspection of tubes with an outside diameter greater than or equal to 10 mm, and with an outside diameter-to-thickness ratio greater than or equal to 5.

EN 1011-1:2009 Welding — Recommendations for welding of metallic materials Part 1: General guidance for arc welding

This European Standard contains general guidance for the arc welding of metallic materials in all forms of product (e.g. cast, wrought, extruded, forged).
The processes and techniques referred to in this Part of EN 1011 may not all be relevant to all materials.
Additional information relevant to specific materials is given in the relevant Parts of the Standard.

Composite Slabs and Beams using Steel Decking
Best Practice for Design and Construction

This guide covers the design and construction of composite floors, paying particular attention to the good practice aspects. Following a description of the benefits of composite construction and its common applications, the roles and responsibilities of the parties involved in the design and construction process are identified. The requirements for the transfer of information throughout the design and construction process are described.
The design of composite slabs and beams is discussed in detail in relation to the Eurocodes and BS 5950. In addition to general ultimate and serviceability limit state design issues, practical design considerations such as the formation of holes in the slab, support details, fire protection, and attachments to the slab are discussed. Guidance is also given on the acoustic performance of typical composite slabs. The obligations of designers according to the CDM Regulations are identified and discussed. The practical application of Slimdek construction, which normally utilises deep decking and special support beams, is also covered. Typical construction details are illustrated, and guidance is given on the formation of openings in the beams and the slab.

Especially for Grunf

this book is an attempt to provide a focus on the design of new steel superstructures for modern railway bridges. However, while the focus is on replacement superstructures, many of the principles and methods outlined will also be useful in the maintenance and rehabilitation of existing steel railway bridges. This book is intended to supplement existing structural steel design books, manuals, handbooks, guides, specifications, and technical reports currently used by railway bridge design engineers

Mathematical Geophysics: An Introduction to Rotating Fluids and the Navier-Stokes Equations

Jean-Yves Chemin, Benoit Desjardins, Isabelle Gallagher, Emmanuel Grenier
Publisher: O.U.P 2006
ISBN: 019857133X
272 Pages PDF 1 MB

Aimed at graduate students, researchers and academics in mathematics, engineering, oceanography, meteorology, and mechanics, this text provides a detailed introduction to the physical theory of rotating fluids, a significant part of geophysical fluid dynamics. The text is divided into four parts, with the first part providing the physical background of the geophysical models to be analyzed. Part two is devoted to a self contained proof of the existence of weak (or strong) solutions to the imcompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Part three deals with the rapidly rotating Navier-Stokes equations, first in the whole space, where dispersion effects are considered. The case where the domain has periodic boundary conditions is then analyzed, and finally rotating Navier-Stokes equations between two plates are studied, both in the case of periodic horizontal coordinated and those in R2. In Part IV, the stability of Ekman boundary layers and boundary layer effects in magnetohydrodynamics and quasigeostrophic equations are discussed. The boundary layers which appear near vertical walls are presented and formally linked with the classical Prandlt equations. Finally spherical layers are introduced, whose study is completely open.

Design of Composite Slabs and Beams with Steel Decking

Ascot, UK

Abstract
Presents a method of design consistent with BS 5950: Part 1 and Part 3.1 for simply supported composite beams as used in buildings. A total of 71 design tables for both uniform and point load cases are included to aid selection of steel beam sizes depending on span and loading, depth of the concrete slab and shape of the deck profile used. A worked example illustrates the design of a typical composite beam.
