Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Design
"Daniel Williams's Sustainable Design is . . . a thoroughly practical call for the design professions to take the next steps toward transformation of the human prospect toward a future that is sustainable and sustaining of the best in human life lived in partnership not domination."
--From the Foreword by David W. Orr, the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics and Chair of the Environmental Studies Program at Oberlin College
"In this pioneering book, Daniel Williams provides the sort of intelligent, thoughtful, experienced insights that--if followed--will ensure that we make the right choices. It should be on the desk of every architect in the world."
--Denis Hayes, president and CEO of the Bullitt Foundation and coordinator of the first Earth Day in 1970
Architects identify "sustainability" as the most important change in the future of their profession. Sustainable Design: Ecology, Architecture, and Planning is a practical, comprehensive guide to design and plan a built environment compatible with the region's economic, social, and ecological patterns.
In this book, Daniel Williams challenges professionals to rethink architecture and to see their projects not as objects but as critical, connected pieces of the whole, essential to human health as well as to regional economy and ecology. Comprehensive in scope, Sustainable Design answers key questions such as:
How do I begin thinking and designing ecologically?
What is the difference between "green design" and "sustainable design"?
What are some examples of effective change I can make that will have the most impact for the least cost?
Written for architects, planners, landscape architects, engineers, public officials, and change agent professionals, this important resource defines the issues of sustainable design, illustrates conceptual and case studies, and provides support for continued learning in this increasingly central focus of architects' and urban planners' work.
Williams's book features winning projects from the first decade of the AIA's Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten award program.

Author: Mark D. Zoback | Size: 26,2 MB | Format:PDF | Publisher: Cambridge University | Year: 2007 | pages: 464 | ISBN: 0521770696
This interdisciplinary book encompasses the fields of rock mechanics, structural geology and petroleum engineering to address a wide range of geomechanical problems that arise during the exploitation of oil and gas reservoirs. It considers key practical issues such as prediction of pore pressure, estimation of hydrocarbon column heights and fault seal potential, determination of optimally stable well trajectories, casing set points and mud weights, changes in reservoir performance during depletion, and production-induced faulting and subsidence. The book establishes the basic principles involved before introducing practical measurement and experimental techniques to improve recovery and reduce exploitation costs. It illustrates their successful application through case studies taken from oil and gas fields around the world. This book is a practical reference for geoscientists and engineers in the petroleum and geothermal industries, and for research scientists interested in stress measurements and their application to problems of faulting and fluid flow in the crust.

This dissertation presents an investigation of the effect of vertical ground motion on RC structures studied through a combined analytical-experimental research approach. The analytical study investigated the effect of vertical ground motion on RC bridges and buildings considering various geometric configurations. For the experimental investigation, sub-structured pseudo-dynamic (SPSD) tests and cyclic static tests with different constant axial loads were employed using the Multi-Axial Full-Scale Sub- Structured Testing and Simulation (MUST-SIM) Facility.

Bentley RAM Structural System (SELECT Series 4) 14.04.03.00
Size: 103.97 MB
The RAM Modeler allows the user to quickly create the database of even the most complex building structures. Its intuitive interface and methodology makes it easy to learn. By utilizing a graphical modeler, the user immediately sees what is being modeled. Modeling errors are visually apparent and can be easily corrected. Changes to the structure required by the Architect, Owner, or Client can be quickly and easily accommodated.
The RAM Steel Beam Design module is a powerful tool that allows engineers to quickly design the gravity beams of a structure. It works in conjunction with the RAM Modeler, making it easy to alter design criteria, building codes and even the floor plan in search of the most efficient design.
RAM Steel Column Design allows the engineer to design gravity columns in either interactive mode or batch mode. It also allows for the design of base plates.
RAM Frame analyzes the model created in the RAM Modeler. Typically the model can contain both gravity and frame members and gravity loads distribution can be carried out according to one-way or two-way load distribution. The program provides data for all of the gravity and lateral members plus deck information, slab edges and surface loads. Referring to systems with one-way slabs, tributary floor load, reactions from gravity beams and live load reduction factors are determined and applied to the lateral members. Diaphragm mass properties are calculated for each diaphragm at stories. Also for systems with two-way slabs, gravity loads can be directly applied to slabs, which allow engineers to include two-way load distribution for gravity loads.
RAM Concrete Gravity Analysis is used to calculate all gravity concrete beam and column forces. The gravity forces are calculated using finite element analysis of each floor in a structure. The reactions from each floor’s analysis are carried down and automatically applied to the analysis of the floor below. A quadrilateral finite element mesh is generated for a floor if it contains a two way deck within a slab edge loop on that floor. The program automatically considers skip loading for live loads on the beam lines lying under one way decking if desired.
The RAM Foundation module is a powerful tool for analyzing and designing concrete spread, continuous, and pile foundations. It is completely integrated into the RAM Structural System with all gravity and lateral loads as well as column and base plate information automatically available for the footing design. Once the basic design parameters have been entered, the analysis and design optimization can be performed on individual footings or on the complete model. The final design reported includes footing dimensions as well as reinforcement selections conforming to all specified code criteria.
