- Abstract: The process of improving structural design, including reliability assessment, requires that special attention will be given to all ingredients of the design procedure. These include theoretical concepts, experimental data, and computational tools applied in the evaluation of structural safety, serviceability and durability. The tremendous progress made in computer technology from the calculators of the pre-computer era to the powerful computers now available to all designers contributes nowadays to qualitative improvements of the entire design procedure.
The development of computer technology makes possible now to use fully probabilistic reliability assessment concepts. Such a transition requires not only the development of new methods corresponding to the potential of computers, but also a change from the current designer’s deterministic “way of thinking” to a probabilistic one. The primary aim in writing this book and attached software supplemented by a large number of illustrative examples is to provide the reader with the foundation for an understanding of full probabilistic reliability assessment procedure based on Monte Carlo simulation technique.
