The present work presents an investigation about the capabilities of limit analysis of rigid block assemblages in the structural assessment of ancient masonry constructions. A review about the basic concepts of limit analysis and previous works in the subject is made. A formulation of limit analysis for materials with non-associated flow rules is adopted in order to represent the non-dilatant friction failure mode in masonry. Two computer tools are developed for two and three dimensional models, respectively. The yield functions proposed are capable to take into account limited compressive stresses.
