Supplement No. 1 to ANSI/AISC 358-05
August 4, 2009 from American Institute of Steel Construction

(Chicago, IL) – A valuable resource that provides a greater variety of prequalified moment connections options for special moment frames (SMF) and intermediate moment frames (IMF) is now available for designers of steel structures in high seismic regions.

ANSI/AISC 358-05s1 is a supplement to the 2005 AISC standard, Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications. The document modifies an existing prequalified moment connection and adds three new prequalified moment connections.

When it was first introduced in 2005, AISC Prequalified Connections covered three connection types: reduced beam section (RBS) moment connections, bolted unstiffened extended end-plate (BUEEP) moment connections, and bolted stiffened extended end-plate (BSEEP) moment connections. A limitation was necessary at that time on both of the prequalified extended end-plate moment connections: they could not be used with composite concrete structural slabs in SMF.

Supplement No. 1 to ANSI/AISC 358-05 provides three more prequalified connection types and eliminates the prohibition of composite slabs for extended end-plate moment connections in SMF. Supplement No. 1 also adds prequalified details for bolted flange plate (BFP) moment connections, welded unreinforced flange - welded web (WUF-W) moment connections, and Kaiser bolted bracket (KBB) moment connections.

ANSI/AISC 358-05s1 is available for free download along with ANSI/AISC 358-05, ANSI/AISC341-05, and ANSI/AISC 360-05 at:

This Standard specifies design, detailing, fabrication and quality criteria for connections that are prequalified in accordance with the AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (herein referred to as the AISC Seismic Provisions) for use with special moment frames (SMF) and intermediate moment frames (IMF). The connections contained in this Standard are prequalified to meet the requirements in the AISC Seismic Provisions only when designed and constructed in accordance with the requirements of this Standard. Nothing in this Standard shall preclude the use of connection types contained herein outside the indicated limitations, or the use of other connection types, when satisfactory evidence of qualification in accordance with Appendix S of the AISC Seismic Provisions is presented to the authority having jurisdiction.

(Chicago) – The 2010 AISC standard Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications (AISC 358-10) is now available for public review. This document is a consolidation of the existing Prequalified Connections standard (ANSI/AISC 358-05) and its supplement (ANSI/AISC 358-05s1-09). The consolidated standard includes all five prequalified moment connections, as well as revisions for consistency with the upcoming 2010 AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 341-10).

The draft standard is available for your review by downloading the document at the links provided below. A paper copy of the standard can also be requested for a fee of $15 by contacting Janet Cummins at 312-670-5411 or by e-mailing [email protected].

You may submit comments using the online comment form available at aisc.org/AISC358prcomment.

AISC 358-16 "Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications."

ANSI/AISC 358-16, Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications, was developed using a consensus process in concert with the Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 360-16) and Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 341-16). ANSI/AISC 358-16 is incorporated by reference into the Seismic Provisions.

This edition includes minor editorial updates and clarifications from previous versions as well as two additional prequalified moment connections: the Simpson Strong Frame moment connection (Chapter 12) and the double-tee moment connection (Chapter 13).

A nonmandatory Commentary has been prepared to provide background for the provi-sions of the Standard, and the user is encouraged to consult it. Additionally, nonmandatory User Notes are interspersed throughout the Standard to provide concise and practical guid-ance in the application of the provisions.
