The papers of this major proceedings are all in English, however both the titles in the table of contents and the abstracts that proceed each paper are in both English and French. Each paper offers detailed discussion of the author's research, with b&w photos, tables, and equations, as appropriate, as well as a list of references. The scope of the work is substantial, filling four large volumes, with the material grouped broadly by topics that include laboratory testing, physical and constitutive modelling, problematic soils, in-situ testing, deep foundations, retaining walls, ground improvement, and deep excavation. The concluding sections delve into issues of education, public awareness, and data management, with papers discussing specific approaches and recommendations. Several keynote lectures on broad topics are included concerning the state of research in the areas of construction processes, analysis, and design; prediction, monitoring, and evaluation of performance of geotechnical structures; and management, training and education in the field. The final two keynotes are on specific projects: the project to protect Venice from high tides, and the challenges in the Middle East of constructing tall buildings and deep foundations. There is an author, but no subject index. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
