This design guide provides an in-depth review of rain loads and ponding effects to help design professionals properly and efficiently design for ponding on roofs constructed with structural steel, open web steel joists, and joist girders. It includes several recommended methods of analysis that can be used to consider the effects of ponding, methods of design accounting for ponding effects, and a presentation of the SJI Roof Bay Analysis Tool. These methods are thoroughly discussed and then demonstrated with many helpful design examples.

Design Guide 16 : Assessment and Repair of Structural Steel in Existing Buildings, 2025

Abstract: As buildings age, the need for effective structural evaluation and maintenance becomes increasingly critical. This publication discusses common considerations for initial assessments as well as methods for detailed inspection, evaluation, and nondestructive examination. It also explores several types of damage or deterioration commonly found in existing steel buildings and approaches for evaluating their structural effects. The guide offers practical advice for planning and executing repairs.

Design Guide 6: Composite Column Design (Second Ed.) + Composite Column Program

Author(s)/Editor(s): Matthew Trammell, Mark Denavit, Tiziano Perea, Jerome Hajjar, and Roberto Leon| Format: PDF| Quality: Original preprint| Year: 2025

This new edition of Design Guide 6 provides updated and expanded information on the design of steel-concrete composite columns. Guidance for designing and detailing encased composite columns has been updated and expanded to reflect the modern requirements of the 2022 AISC Specification. This new edition now also includes direction for designing square, rectangular, and round filled composite columns.

Additionally, guidance has been given for designing square and rectangular filled composite columns with high-strength materials. Thorough design examples are included for each of these composite column types. Recommendations for designing connections to composite columns are provided. A modern spreadsheet-based tool is also provided to assist with calculating available axial, flexural, and shear strengths of composite members.
