Due to an ever-decreasing supply in raw materials and stringent constraints on conventional energy sources, demand for lightweight, efficient and low-cost structures has become crucially important in modern engineering design.

This requires engineers to search for optimal and robust design options to address design problems that are commonly large in scale and highly nonlinear, making finding solutions challenging. In the past two decades, metaheuristic algorithms have shown promising power, efficiency and versatility in solving these difficult optimization problems.

This book examines the latest developments of metaheuristics and their applications in structural engineering, construction engineering and earthquake engineering, offering practical case studies as examples to demonstrate real-world applications. Topics cover a range of areas within engineering, including big bang-big crunch approach, genetic algorithms, genetic programming, harmony search, swarm intelligence and some other metaheuristic methods. Case studies include structural identification, vibration analysis and control, topology optimization, transport infrastructure design, design of reinforced concrete, performance-based design of structures and smart pavement management. With its wide range of everyday problems and solutions, Metaheursitic Applications in Structures and Infrastructures can serve as a supplementary text for design courses and computation in engineering as well as a reference for researchers and engineers in metaheuristics, optimization in civil engineering and computational intelligence.

• Review of the latest development of metaheuristics in engineering.
• Detailed algorithm descriptions with focus on practical implementation.
• Uses practical case studies as examples and applications.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1843 edition. Excerpt: .or their hold, to prevent the generation of such action. Indeed it does not appear but that a system of vertical timber bracing between the sills and curbs of the roadway and the main chains, commencing by an abuttal on the podium of the piers or suspension towers, may be introduced in connexion with transverse bracing from main chain to main chain in the deep parts, or where the head-way would not be affected by it, with economy and advantage. Such a system as that here suggested would adapt itself readily and without derangement to the expansion and contraction of the chains and rods, and tend materially to stiffen the road-way, whilst it would check any approach to the undulations, which, without a system of vertical bracing, are found to follow the vibration of the road-way in tempests. Vertical bracing under the road-way occupies head-way below, or renders it necessary to raise the bridge so much higher to preserve it, without assisting in any degree to steady the chains and give them the aid of the road-way in resisting impulses to motion.

FRP Deck and Steel Girder Bridge Systems
Posted by: ir_71 - 06-25-2013, 06:32 AM - Forum: Bridge (Project and Technology) - Replies (4)

FRP Deck and Steel Girder Bridge Systems

Author: Julio F. Davalos, An Chen, and Pizhong Qiao | Size: 12.48 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: CRC Press | Year: 2013 | pages: 333 | ISBN: 9781439877616

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) decks have been increasingly used for new construction and rehabilitation projects worldwide. The benefits of using FRP bridge decks, such as durability, light weight, high strength, reduced maintenance costs, and rapid installation, outweigh their initial in-place material costs when implemented in highway bridge projects. FRP Deck and Steel Girder Bridge Systems: Analysis and Design compiles the necessary information to facilitate the development of the standards and guidelines needed to promote further adoption of composite sandwich panels in construction. It also, for the first time, proposes a complete set of design guidelines.

Providing both experimental investigations and theoretical analyses, this book covers three complementary parts: FRP decks, shear connectors between the deck and steel girders, and the behavior of bridge systems. The text presents stiffness and strength evaluations for FRP deck panels and FRP deck-girder bridge systems. While the FRP deck studies focus on honeycomb FPR sandwich panels over steel girder bridge systems, they can be adapted to other sandwich configurations. Similarly, the shear connection and bridge system studies can be applied to other types of FRP decks. Chapters discuss skin effect, core configuration, facesheet laminates, out-of-plane compression and sheer, mechanical shear connectors, and FRP deck–steel girder bridge systems.

Based on the findings described in the text, the authors propose design guidelines and present design examples to illustrate application of the guidelines. In the final chapter, they also provide a systematic analysis and design approach for single-span FRP deck-stringer bridges. This book presents new and improved theories and combines analytical models, numerical analyses, and experimental investigations to devise a practical analysis procedure, resulting in FRP deck design formulations.

PRACTICAL MODELLING OF HIGH-RISE DUAL SYSTEMS WITH REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB-COLUMN FR

PRACTICAL MODELLING OF HIGH-RISE DUAL SYSTEMS WITH REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB-COLUMN FRAMES

Author: MYOUNGSU SHIN1, THOMAS H.-K. KANG2* AND JACOB S. GROSSMAN1 | Size: 0.7 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF TALL AND SPECIAL BUILDINGS (Wiley Interscience) | Year: 2009 | pages: 22 | ISBN: -

This paper discusses practical modelling issues pertinent to the design of an irregularly shaped reinforced concrete
(RC) high-rise building currently under development in New York City. The structure analysed consists of a
60-storey residential tower and a 25-storey hotel building structurally connected to each other. For the seismic
force resistance, a dual system combining ordinary RC shear walls and intermediate slab–column moment frames
was used at the upper portion, while a building frame system of ordinary RC shear walls was used at the lower
portion of the structure. A variety of models were used to simulate the behaviour of various elements of the
structure, with special attention given to overall systemic effects of different member stiffnesses considered to
account for distinct stress levels under service and ultimate loads. The models used for slab–column frames and
shear walls were verifi ed by comparing with other available models or laboratory tests. The in-plane fl exibility
of fl oor diaphragms at the interface between the two substructures with different geometries was simulated to
identify the most critical wind conditions for each structural member. Finally, building dynamic analyses were
performed to demonstrate the modelling issues to be considered for the lateral force design of irregular high-rise
buildings. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
