Worked Examples for the Design of Concrete Structures to Eurocode 2

Author: Tony Threlfall | Size: 140 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: CRC Press | Year: 2013 | Pages: 260 | ISBN: 0415468191, 9780415468190

This practical design guide illustrates through worked examples how Eurocode 2 may be used in practice. Complete and detailed designs of six archetypal building and public utility structures are provided. The book caters to students and engineers with little or no practical experience of design, as well as to more experienced engineers who may be unfamiliar with Eurocode 2.

Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the Structural Eurocodes, with particular reference to actions on structures. Chapter 2 describes the principles, requirements and methods used for the design of members. This is followed by worked examples for the following structures:

A multi-storey office building with three forms of floor construction

A basement to the office building with three types of foundations

A free-standing cantilever earth-retaining wall

A large underground service reservoir

An open-top rectangular tank on an elastic soil

An open-top cylindrical tank on an elastic soil

In addition to the design of all the elements, the analysis of each structure is fully explained. This applies particularly to the design of the basement, and the tanks bearing on elastic soils, for which specially derived tables are included in appendices to the book. The calculations are complemented by reinforcement drawings in accordance with the recommendations in the third edition (2006) of the Standard method of detailing structural concrete, with commentaries on the bar arrangements.

This book can be used as a stand-alone publication, or as a more detailed companion to Reynolds’s Reinforced Concrete Designer’s Handbook, now in its 11th edition. The comprehensive treatment of the designs, and the variety of structures considered, make this a unique and invaluable work.

  Fracture Mechanics Vol. 1 & 2

Fracture Mechanics Vol 2
(Applied Reliability)

Author: Ammar Grous | Size: 7 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: Wiley, ISTE | Year: 2012 | Pages: 368 | ISBN: 1848214413, 9781848214415

This second book of a 3-volume set on Fracture Mechanics completes the first volume through the analysis of adjustment tests suited to correctly validating the justified use of the laws conforming to the behavior of the materials and structures under study.
This volume focuses on the vast range of statistical distributions encountered in reliability. Its aim is to run statistical measurements, to present a report on enhanced measures in mechanical reliability and to evaluate the reliability of repairable or unrepairable systems. To achieve this, the author presents a theoretical and practice-based approach on the following themes: criteria of failures; Bayesian applied probability; Markov chains; Monte Carlo simulation as well as many other solved case studies.
This book distinguishes itself from other works in the field through its originality in presenting an educational approach which aims at helping practitioners both in academia and industry. It is intended for technicians, engineers, designers, students, and teachers working in the fields of engineering and vocational education. The main objective of the author is to provide an assessment of indicators of quality and reliability to aid in decision-making. To this end, an intuitive and practical approach, based on mathematical rigor, is recommended.

This volume contains the full-length papers presented in the 3rd International Conference on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (COMPDYN 2011) that was held on May 25-28, 2011 on the Corfu island, Greece. COMPDYN 2011 is one of the thematic Conferences of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) and a Special Interest Conference of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM).
COMPDYN 2011 has been also promoted by the European Committee on Computational Solid and Structural Mechanics (ECCSM) of ECCOMAS. The purpose of the Conference was to bring together the scientific communities of Computational Mechanics, Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering in an effort to facilitate the exchange of ideas in topics of mutual interests and to serve as a platform for establishing links between research groups with complementary activities.

SCI P361 Steel Building Design Introduction to the Eurocodes

Size: < 1.0 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: The Steel Construction Institute | Year: 2009 | pages: 37 | ISBN: 13: 978-1 85942-180-2

The design of steel framed buildings in the UK, including those where composite (steel and concrete) construction is used, has, since 1990, generally been in accordance with
the British Standard BS 5950. However, that Standard is due to be withdrawn in March 2010; it will be replaced by the corresponding Parts of the Structural Eurocodes.

The Eurocodes are a set of structural design standards, developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardisation) over the last 30 years, to cover the design of all types of structures in steel, concrete, timber, masonry and aluminium. In the UK, they are published by BSI under the designations BS EN 1990 to BS EN 1999; each of these ten Eurocodes is published in several Parts and each Part is accompanied by a National Annex that implements the CEN document and adds certain UK-specific provisions.

SCI, BCSA and Corus* have undertaken the preparation of a series of guidance publications to assist designers in the design of steel-framed buildings in accordance with the Eurocodes and this publication is the first in that series.

This publication offers a general overview of design to the Eurocodes but does not give detailed guidance. The author of the publication is Miss M E Brettle, assisted by Mr D C Iles and Mr A L Smith, all of The Steel Construction Institute.
The preparation of this guide was funded by Tata Steel Europe*, and their support is gratefully acknowledged.

GIS and GeoComputation: Innovations in GIS 7

Geographic Information Systems are computer-based systems for geographic analysis. They have been developed over the past twenty five years and are now widely used. A recent research direction has been the development of geocomputation , representing computer-based geographical analysis beyond the traditional bounds of GIS.
In geocomputation, the computer is the research environment itself, not merely a tool. A key to geocomputation it that highly powered computing can be used with sufficient data to avaid traditional parametric approaches altogether. The term geocomputation includes the use of computer-based techniques such as artificial neural networks, genetic programming and fuzzy logic, but in a geographical context.
This new book in the prestigious Innovations in GIS series, presents the latest research in geocomputational techniques as presented in the GIS UK Annual Conference.

The Thermomechanics of Plasticity and Fracture
Posted by: Mohammad6299 - 02-22-2014, 06:24 PM - Forum: Mechanics & Material Technology (Elasticity, Plasticity and Nonlinearity) - No Replies

The Thermomechanics of Plasticity and Fracture

Author: Gerard A. Maugin | Size: 3 MB | Format: DjVu | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: Cambridge University Press | Year: 1992 | Pages: 368 | ISBN: 0521394767, 0521397804, 9780521394765

This book concentrates on the mathematical theory of plasticity and fracture, and presents it in a thermomechanical framework. It follows the macroscopic, phenomenological approach, which proposes equations abstracted from generally accepted experimental facts, studies the adequacy of the consequences drawn from these equations to those facts, and then provides useful tools for designers and engineers. Many examples of plasticity and fracture are presented, and each chapter concludes with problems for students.
