The purpose of this monograph is to show how to model a compliant offshore structure in an ocean environment. Such structures are of increasing importance because of the desire to access the deep ocean. A brief history and an extensive review of the four existing transverse beam models are presented. The four beam models are Euler-Bernoulli, Rayleigh, shear and Timoshenko models. These are the fundamental models for the preliminary studies of offshore structures. The complete analytical solutions are given for each model. This review is followed by a chapter on the stochastic modelling of environmental forces. The waves are assumed to be random, and the fluid force is modeled using the Morison Equation. In subsequent chapters, the models are expanded to include the axial motion as well as the transverse motion in two and three dimensions.
Numerical results are obtained using both deterministic and random forces. A detailed description of the numerical methods is provided so that the reader can adapt these methods to his or her particular problem. Researchers in the fields of structural mechanics and ocean engineering, especially those with an interest in nonlinear hybrid beam/cable models, will find this a useful book.

Exploitation of oil and gas reserves from hydrocarbon reservoirs below the sea bed has increased rapidly since the 1960s. However, the wide range of subject areas within ocean engineering has posed problems in the teaching of students because it involves reference to textbooks on many disciplines including corrosion metallurgy, meteorology, process engineering and even marine biology. In this textbook, the author aims to present an integrated treatment of the main subject areas which contribute to the design, construction, installation and operation of fixed and floating offshore structures. It emphasizes the fundamentals of oceanography, fluid mechanics, wave theory, hydrodynamics and structural analysis. Sections on model testing, full-scale measurements, design and certification are also included to ensure that the book is of value to professional engineers.

Author: C. A. Brebbia, Stephen Walker | Size: 4 MB | Format:PDF | Quality:Scanner | Publisher: Newnes-Butterworths | Year: 1979 | Pages: 323 | ISBN: 0408003936, 9780408003933
The discovery of large deposits of oil and gas in deep-water regions has resulted in the construction of large production and drilling platforms, which often have to withstand severe environmental conditions in inhospitable areas. Often the natural period of vibration of these structures is comparable with the typical period of variation of the environmental forces, making a dynamic spectral analysis necessary.
This book starts by explaining the fundamentals of probabilistic processes, develops the theory necessary for the description and analysis of sea states and describes the random-vibration approach to structural response.
Chapter 3 explains the essential hydrodynamics of water waves, describes wave forecasting, and defines the statistical parameters associated with sea state description.
Chapter 4 deals with the calculation of wave forces on slender members (such as those used in the construction of steel lattice-type structures) using Morison's equation.
Chapter 5 describes extensively the use of diffraction theory in the calculation of wave forces on large-diameter bodies such as those found on concrete gravity-type structures.
In Chapter 6, the study of environmental forces is completed by describing the effect of currents and winds.
Chapter 7 is an introduction to the theory of vibration, including a description of the spectral approach.
Chapter 8 describes the extension of this theory to multi-degree-of-freedom structures, as well as giving a brief introduction to the method of matrix analysis of structural response.
Finally, in Chapter 9 some case studies are reported, and the problems of fatigue and soil-structure interaction are discussed.

First published in 1967, Professor Batchelor's classic text on fluid dynamics is still one of the foremost texts in the subject. The careful presentation of the underlying theories of fluids is still timely and applicable, even in these days of almost limitless computer power. This re-issue should ensure that a new generation of graduate students see the elegance of Professor Batchelor's presentation.
