  [Suggestion] Edit "Engineering Problems" desciption
Posted by: cernogratz - 06-27-2016, 02:10 AM - Forum: Archive - Replies (2)

I have a problem with s-curve and yes it is an engineering problem but the description says "If you have a problem in design or analysis of your structure, put it here and our members will try to give a solution to it."...So it does not include problems encountered in management and construction of project. I suggest we add "management" and/or "construction" to it. Something like this.."If you have a problem in design, analysis, construction and management of your structure/project, put it here and our members and/or admins will try to give a solution to it."

Hong Kong Architecture 1945-2015: From Colonial to Global

Author(s)/Editor(s): Xue, Charlie Q. L. | Size: 22.55 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Springer | Year: 2016 | pages: 337 | ISBN: 981101003X

The only English volume to comprehensively cover the 70 years’ trajectory of Hong Kong architecture after WWII
A reputable international author on modern Chinese architecture with a global view
Crystallization of the author’s twenty-six years’ observation and engagement with the topic

This book focuses on the transformation from colonial to global – the formation, mechanism, events, works and people related to urban architecture. The book reveals hardships the city encountered in the 1950s and the glamour enjoyed in the 1980s. It depicts the public and private developments, and especially the public housing which has sheltered millions of residents. The author identifies the architects practising in the formative years and the representatives of a rising generation after the 1980s. Suffering from land shortage and a dense environment, the urban development of Hong Kong has in the past 70 years met the changing demands of fluctuating economic activities and a rising population. Architecture on the island has been shaped by social demands, the economy and technology. The buildings have been forged by the government, clients, planners, architects, many contractors and end-users. The built environment nurtures our life and is visual evidence of the way the city has developed. Hong Kong is a key to East Asia in the Pacific Era. The book is a must-read for a thorough understanding the contemporary history and architecture of this oriental pearl.
Endorsement:
“Hong Kong sets an extreme example of hyper-density living. MTR’s Kowloon Station project offered my firm the unique opportunity to contribute to a new type of fully integrated three dimensional transport mega-structure, conceived as a well-connected place for people to live, work and play. Through Charlie Xue’s book, one can see how a compact city works and high density integrated development indicates a sustainable path for modern city making.”
Sir Terry Farrell, CBE, Principal, Farrells
"Well researched and refreshingly well structured, Charlie Xue's latest book comprehensively shows how Hong Kong's post-war urban architecture both tracks and symbolizes the former British colony's rise to success - a must read for architecture and culture buffs alike."
Peter G. Rowe, Raymond Garbe Professor of Architecture and Urban Design, Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor.
“An essential addition to the growing literature on Chinese architecture, the title of the book belies the full scope of Xue’s extensive history. Covering Hong Kong’s postwar transition from defeated colony to Pacific Age power house, Xue expertly traces the evolution of the city’s ambitious and innovative programs of integrated high density urban design and infrastructure, as well as changing architectural fashions. In a time when many Western governments have all but abandoned public housing programs, Xue’s book is a timely reminder of what can be achieved.”

Integration of Nature and Technology for Smart Cities, Third Edition

Author(s)/Editor(s): Ahuja, PE, RCDD, LEED BD+C, CxA, Anil | Size: 16.95 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Springer | Year: 2016 | pages: 404 | ISBN: 3319257137

A unique approach to green, healthy and innovative building design and the sustainable interconnection between buildings and their surroundings
Explains the interconnections between nature and technology in building design and their impact on the environment, health, and occupants behavior
Illustrates innovative, smart technologies for buildings and cities and how they can be even smarter with the integration of nature
Incorporates knowledge derived from the latest research on smart applications into engineering building systems and the entire urban fabric

This book is a resumption of the work “Integrated M/E Design: Building Systems Engineering” published by Anil Ahuja in 1997. Together with an international group of authors from the engineering, urban planning, and architecture fields, Mr. Ahuja discussed new trends and paradigms in the smart buildings and smart city sectors and extended the topic of the previous publication from the building to the entire city. A smart, sustainable building is not just about the building itself. There are things happening in the inside of the building and on the outside. A smart building connects the inside with the outside, provides efficiencies on both sides, synchronizes the outside infrastructure with its inside systems, and integrates nature and its occupants in its design. A smart building doesn’t just provide technology solutions. It is about constant exchange between the inside and the outside of the building, the contribution of the building to the quality of the entire neighborhood and the rest of the city, how the smart building can connect people in a sharing community, and how technology can be the key to make it happen.

Elements of Architecture: Assembling archaeology, atmosphere and the performance of building spaces

Author(s)/Editor(s): Mikkel Bille and Tim Flohr Sørensen | Size: 10 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Routledge | Year: 2016 | pages: 465 | ISBN: 9781138775411

Elements of Architecture explores new ways of engaging architecture in archaeology. It conceives of architecture both as the physical evidence of past societies and as existing beyond the physical environment. The book engages with the meeting point between these two perspectives, for although archaeologists must deal with the presence and absence of physicality as a discipline that studies humans through things, to understand humans they must also  address the performances, as well as temporal and affective impacts, of these material remains. The contributions in this volume investigate the way time, performance and movement, both physically and emotionally, are central aspects of understanding architectural assemblages. It is a book about the constellations of people, places and things that emerge and dissolve as affective, mobile, performative and temporal engagements.

  DBLEAVES program
Posted by: Grunf - 06-21-2016, 09:12 AM - Forum: Free Discussion - Replies (1)

Dear members,

did perhaps someone use program called DBLEAVES?

I'm not requesting this program, although it might be helpful to have it, instead I would just like to discuss it with someone who have used it. Also, if someone could post a manual for this program that would be great, but please post it in the forum section related to program manuals.

Also, please if someone used the program, could you share your experiences about it? What for did you use the program? Did you compare your results with other programs or maybe with experiments? What are the possibilities of the program regarding modeling of soil (nonlinear, elastic, springs, gapping,...), what are the possibilities of modeling soil-structure interaction problems (dynamic, substructure, direct analysis)...?

I would add here the program's web site and some more information if I could find those, but I know only about the name of the program and that it may be used for soil-structure interaction problems.

Any information about the program is more than welcome.

Kind regards,
Grunf
