Low-Volume Road Engineering: Design, Construction, and Maintenance

Low-Volume Road Engineering: Design, Construction and Maintenance

Author(s)/Editor(s): Robert A. Douglas | Size: 14.5 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Taylor and Francis Group | Year: 2016 | pages: 334 | ISBN: 9781482212655

" Defined as roads with traffic volumes of no more than 400 vehicles per day, they have enormous impacts on economies, communication, and social interaction. Low-volume roads comprise, at one end of the spectrum, farm-to-market roads, roads in developing countries, northern roads, roads on aboriginal lands and parklands; and at the other end of the spectrum, heavy haul roads for mining, oil and gas, oil sands extraction, and forestry.Low-Volume Road Engineering: Design, Construction, and Maintenance gives an international perspective to the engineering design of low-volume roads and their construction and maintenance. It is a single reference drawing from the dispersed literature. It lays out the basic principles of each topic, from road location and geometric design, pavement design, slope stability and erosion control, through construction to maintenance, then refers the reader to more comprehensive treatment elsewhere. Wherever possible, comparisons are made between the standard specifications and practices existing in the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Topics covered include the following:

Road classification, location, and geometric design
Pavement concepts, materials, and thickness design
Drainage, erosion and sediment control, and watercrossings
   Slope stability
   Geosynthetics
Road construction, maintenance, and maintenance management

Low-Volume Road Engineering: Design, Construction, and Maintenance is a valuable reference for engineers, planners, designers and project managers in consulting firms, contracting firms and NGOs. It also is an essential reference in support of university courses on transportation engineering and planning, and on mining, oil and gas, and forestry infrastructure.

Analysis of possible use of pyrolytic products as binders in asphalt mixes

  • Author(s): Lidija Avsenik, Marjan Tušar
  • Published By: GRAĐEVINAR
  • Published Year: 3/2016
  • DOI: 10.14256/JCE.1305.2015
  • Size: 284 KB
  • Quality: Scanner
  • Abstract: New binders are produced in order to reduce dependence on crude oil. This study aims to evaluate pyrolytic products and their blends with bitumen, as a possible substitution for bitumen. Bitumen of the penetration grade 70/100 was used as a matrix for the blends. Standard test were conducted in order to determine mechanical properties of the reference bitumen, pyrolytic products, and their blends.
The results obtained during this study indicate that pyrolytic products can be used as a substitution for bitumen originating from crude oil or, in proper proportions, as an additive to that bitumen.

Analysis of structures on elastic foundations

Author(s)/Editor(s): Edward Tsudik | Size: 14 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: J Ross Pub | Year: 2012 | pages: 601 | ISBN: 1604270748

Analysis of Structures on Elastic Foundations is a practical guide for structural and geotechnical engineers as well as graduate students working in foundation engineering. The author provides practical methods of analysis and describes in detail various foundations, including simple beams on elastic foundations, and very complex foundations such as mat foundations supported on piles. Methods for fast and easy hand analysis in addition to methods for exact computer analysis are presented. Most of the methods are for three soil models: Winkler foundation, elastic half-space, and elastic layer. Numerical examples throughout the book illustrate the applications of these methods.

URBAN AVANT-GARDES ART, ARCHITECTURE AND CHANGE

This work brings together material from a wide range of disciplines to argue for cultural intervention as a means to radical change, while recognizing that most such efforts in the past have not delivered the dreams of their perpetrators.
It is arranged in nine chapters, each designated by a date between 1871 and 2001.
This is an academic book for second- and third-year undergraduates in art, architecture, cultural geography, cultural planning, cultural studies, urban sociology and urban studies; and for post-graduates in trans-disciplinary fields of culture, society and environment.

  Principles of Structure, Fifth Edition

Principles of Structure, Fifth Edition

Author(s)/Editor(s): Ken Wyatt, Richard Hough | Size: 5 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Year: 2012 | pages: 231 | ISBN: 0415667275

Since its first publication in 1974, Principles of Structure has established itself at the forefront of introductory texts for students of architecture, building and project management seeking a basic understanding of the behavior and design of building structures. It provides a simple quantitative introduction to structural engineering, while also drawing connections to real buildings that are more complex. Retaining the style and format of earlier editions, this Fifth Edition brings the text and examples into alignment with international practice. It also features six new buildings from around the world, illustrating the principles described in the text.

The book begins with a chapter explaining forces and their effects. Other chapters cover ties and struts, loadings, graphical statics, bracings, shears and moments, stresses, deflections, and beam design. There is also an appendix with a fuller explanation of fundamentals for readers unfamiliar with the basic concepts of geometry and statics.

The book offers a unique format with right-hand pages containing text and left-hand pages containing complementary commentary including explanations and expansions of points made in the text and worked examples. This cross-referencing gives readers a range of perspectives and a deeper understanding of each topic. The simple mathematical approach and logical progression―along with the hints and suggestions, worked examples and problem sheets―give beginners straightforward access to elementary structural engineering.

Sustainable Construction Processes: A Resource Text

Sustainable Construction Processes: A Resource Text

Author(s)/Editor(s): Steve Goodhew | Size: 39.2 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Wiley Blackwell | Year: 2016 | pages: 392 | ISBN: 140518759X

This book explores the concepts and practicalities that lead to sustainable construction. It breaks new ground by providing the reader with the underlying principles of how to build sustainably and then assesses many of the tools required for the task. From energy to materials and from procurement to operation, all aspects play their part in turning a theoretically sustainable building project into a reality. There are many guidelines for the designer on how to maximise the sustainability of buildings but this resource text supplements these by focusing on the construction and operational aspects of sustainable buildings, as well as some of the more fundamental design-related considerations.

? Offers an excellent text for those learning to construct, design and operate sustainable buildings.

? Covers the drivers for sustainable construction, definitions, historical impacts, climate change and global, regional and individual responses.

? enables the construction professional to achieve optimum solutions, both in design, process and the aftercare of buildings.

? evaluates the effectiveness of different renewable technologies and provides guidance on the practicalities of their use.

? Alerts the reader to future trends in this field.
