Since its first publication in 1974, Principles of Structure has established itself at the forefront of introductory texts for students of architecture, building and project management seeking a basic understanding of the behavior and design of building structures. It provides a simple quantitative introduction to structural engineering, while also drawing connections to real buildings that are more complex. Retaining the style and format of earlier editions, this Fifth Edition brings the text and examples into alignment with international practice. It also features six new buildings from around the world, illustrating the principles described in the text.
The book begins with a chapter explaining forces and their effects. Other chapters cover ties and struts, loadings, graphical statics, bracings, shears and moments, stresses, deflections, and beam design. There is also an appendix with a fuller explanation of fundamentals for readers unfamiliar with the basic concepts of geometry and statics.
The book offers a unique format with right-hand pages containing text and left-hand pages containing complementary commentary including explanations and expansions of points made in the text and worked examples. This cross-referencing gives readers a range of perspectives and a deeper understanding of each topic. The simple mathematical approach and logical progression―along with the hints and suggestions, worked examples and problem sheets―give beginners straightforward access to elementary structural engineering.

Practical Guide to Project Planning is filled with project documents and templates ready to use for planning and managing project. It explains project analysis and modeling techniques so these documents and templates can be used for effective project management. In addition, the book is also a guide to best practices that comply with the PMI’s PMBOK ® 3.0.
Throughout the book, a real-world, practical project plan is used to explain all management issues related to a project, including scope, time, costs, quality, human resources, communication, risks, procurement, and integration. This example also covers every stage of implementing a project management office (PMO), from initial analysis to post-deployment review.

This book explores the concepts and practicalities that lead to sustainable construction. It breaks new ground by providing the reader with the underlying principles of how to build sustainably and then assesses many of the tools required for the task. From energy to materials and from procurement to operation, all aspects play their part in turning a theoretically sustainable building project into a reality. There are many guidelines for the designer on how to maximise the sustainability of buildings but this resource text supplements these by focusing on the construction and operational aspects of sustainable buildings, as well as some of the more fundamental design-related considerations.
? Offers an excellent text for those learning to construct, design and operate sustainable buildings.
? Covers the drivers for sustainable construction, definitions, historical impacts, climate change and global, regional and individual responses.
? enables the construction professional to achieve optimum solutions, both in design, process and the aftercare of buildings.
? evaluates the effectiveness of different renewable technologies and provides guidance on the practicalities of their use.
? Alerts the reader to future trends in this field.

Author(s)/Editor(s): George Deodatis, Bruce R. Ellingwood, Dan M. Frangopol | Size: 460 MB | Format:PDF | Quality:Unspecified | Year: 2014 | ISBN: 1138000868
Safety, Reliability, Risk and Life-Cycle Performance of Structures and Infrastructures contains the plenary lectures and papers presented at the 11th International Conference on STRUCTURAL SAFETY AND RELIABILITY (ICOSSAR2013, New York, NY, USA, 16-20 June 2013), and covers major aspects of safety, reliability, risk and life-cycle performance of structures and infrastructures, with special focus on advanced technologies, analytical and computational methods of risk analysis, probability-based design and regulations, smart systems and materials, life-cycle cost analysis, damage assessment, social aspects, urban planning, and industrial applications. Emerging concepts as well as state-of-the-art and novel applications of reliability principles in all types of structural systems and mechanical components are included. Civil, marine, mechanical, transportation, nuclear and aerospace applications are discussed. The unique knowledge, ideas and insights make this set of a book of abstracts and searchable, full paper USBdevice must-have literature for researchers and practitioners involved with safety, reliability, risk and life-cycle performance of structures and infrastructures.

In the developed world the design and construction of all aspects of the built environment are regulated by rules and procedures which help prevent failures. When compared to the volume of construction undertaken, the number of failures of buildings and other structures is thankfully small. However, this reality is not reflected on a global basis. Failures do occur, some making headline news, and for a variety of reasons. As such information about failures is vital to make construction even safer. This book has been written by a number of distinguished international experts, and considers numerous facets of what has become termed by many forensic engineering. It covers the spectrum of this discipline with chapters on: risk assessment and management; aspects of the law and construction insurance; limiting the incidence of failures; how failures have been investigated; and remedial works carried out. Numerous case studies and examples from across the world cover not only modern buildings, structures and elements, but some buildings that can truly be described as historic. The spread and depth of topics covered is remarkable and illustrates the importance of this subject in modern engineering and design.

The finite element method is a powerful tool even for non-linear materials’ modeling. But commercial solutions are limited and many novel materials do not follow standard constitutive equations on a macroscopic scale. Thus, is it required that new constitutive equations are implemented into the finite element code. However, it is not sufficient to simply implement only the equations but also an appropriate integration algorithm for the constitutive equation must be provided. This book is restricted to one-dimensional plasticity in order to reduce and facilitate the mathematical formalism and theory and to concentrate on the basic ideas of elasto-plastic finite element procedures. A comprehensive set of completely solved problems is designed for the thorough understand of the presented theory. After working with this new book and reviewing the provided solved and supplementary problems, it should be much easier to study and understand the advanced theory and the respective text books.
