* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781604130454

Product Description:
It was to be a structure like no other - the largest and tallest skyscraper in the world. Initial plans for the Empire State Building called for an Art Deco masterwork to rise 1,000 feet, with 80 stories of rental space. The high-rise was to completely fill the 84,000-square-foot site of the former Waldorf-Astoria, then New York's most opulent hotel. The Empire State Building would, hopefully, accelerate Midtown's stride toward commercial prominence, pulling more business uptown. Built in the early years of the Great Depression, during which one out of four New Yorkers was out of work, the Empire State Building's construction was thought by many to be a foolish undertaking. Yet, it was completed under budget and ahead of schedule, and the new commercial colossus would stand to see a new day dawning - for New York, for America, and for the world.

An Introduction to Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis

[Image: 63669510151144123773.jpg]

By J. N. Reddy

* Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
* Number Of Pages: 488
* Publication Date: 2004-05-11
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 019852529X
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780198525295
* Binding: Hardcover

Book Description:

This book presents the theory and computer implementation of the finite element method as applied to nonlinear problems of heat transfer and similar field problems, fluid mechanics (flows of incompressible fluids), and solid mechanics (elasticity, beams and plates). Both geometric as well as material nonlinearities are considered, and static and transient (i.e. time-dependent) responses are studied. Although there exist a number of books on nonlinear finite elements that serve as good references for engineers who are familiar with the subject and wish to learn advanced topics or the latest developments, there is currently no book which is suitable as a textbook for a first course on nonlinear finite element analysis. This book fills the void in the market, providing a clear understanding of the concepts of nonlinear finite element analyses through detailed theoretical formulations and computer implementation steps, examples and exercises. In addition, the book serves as a prelude to more advanced books on the subject.

Earthquake Monitoring and Seismic Hazard Mitigation in Balkan Countries (NATO Science Series: IV: Earth and Environmental Sciences)

By Eystein S. Husebye

Publisher: Springer

Publication Date: 2008-05-08
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 140206814X
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781402068140

Product Description:

Seismology is rated the Queen of Earth Sciences due to its ability to provide detailed structural information bearing on the Earth interior and on-going dynamic processes. This is due to the advanced theoretical foundation of seismology and the extensive cooperation among seismologists on recording and disseminating of data worldwide. In contrast, some 40 years ago seismology was a backward science and hence funding was poor.

This abruptly changed with the political interest in seismology as the principal tool for monitoring compliance with a potential Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban treaty (CTBT) banning nuclear testing in any environment.

Major countries like USA, UK and USSR launched large-scale research programs including deployment of modern seismograph stations and arrays and these developments are detailed in the book for CTBTO (UN), IRIS (USA), MedNet (Italy), Geofon (Germany) and the tiny Karelia network, NW Russia. Station and network operations require near real time record analysis and topics dealt with here are 2-D signal detector, epicenter location and earthquake monitoring. Balkan is seismically the most active part of Europe due to multiple plate interactions in the Aegean Sea. The tectonic evolution and on-going geodynamic deformations are described in 2 articles. Earthquake hazard analysis and topographic site effects are discussed and likewise large earthquake hazards in the Aegean and the Marmara seas relate to practical applications of such procedures. Foremost; the book gives a good account of past, present and likely future seismological developments in Balkan countries and various kinds of network operations on local to global scales.

Residual soils are found in many parts of the world. They are formed when rock weathering is faster than transport processes by water, gravity and wind. As an effect, much of the soils formed remain at the place of formation and many of the characteristics of the parent rock are retained. In tropical regions, residual soil layers can be very thick, sometimes extending for hundreds of meters before reaching un-weathered rock. Tropical Residual Soils Engineering forms a unique work with regard to other books on soil mechanics and soil engineering as it is entirely devoted to soils in tropical areas. Subjects treated are the origin, testing, and properties of tropical residual soils; application and stabilization of tropical residual soils; slope, slope assessment, and stabilization; development guidelines; and geoenvironmental aspects and development of a spatial database. The technical content is illustrated by a case study. Tropical Residual Soils Engineering is authored by experts that have gained extensive experience with this type of soil. This state-of-the art matter is intended for graduate students, researchers and professionals in soil & rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering working in tropical regions.

One of the principal challenges in structural engineering concerns the development of innovative design concepts to better protect structures, together with their occupants and contents, from the damaging effects of destructive environmental forces including those due to winds, waves and earthquakes. Passive energy dissipation devices, when incorporated into a structure, absorb or consume a portion of the input energy,thereby reducing energy dissipation demand on primary structural members and minimizing possible structural damage. This book is a unified treatment of passive energy dissipation systems. Basic principles, mathematical modeling, practical considerations, implementation issues and structural applications are discussed for each major device type. Numerous examples and case studies are included.
From the Publisher
Passive energy dissipation is one of the structural protective systems used to strengthen existing structures by incorporating devices that are intended to absorb or consume a port of the input energy, thereby reducing energy dissipation demand on primary structural members and minimising possible structural damage. All major types of energy dissipation device are presented and discussed in this book, including those currently installed in structures throughout the world as well as possible future developments in the field.
