The cable stayed bridge is an elegant, economical and efficient structure. Virtually unknown 40 years ago, these bridges have become increasingly important as their properties have been more fully understood. They have recently proved to be highly cost-effective for short to medium spans. The second edition of this extremely popular book has been updated and enhanced to cover the rapid technological progress in this field. Exceptionally well illustrated, the book examines all aspects of the design of cable stayed bridges. Starting with a brief history, it addresses general design criteria and current technology, as well as static and dynamic analysis. The illustrations provide numerous examples of structures already built and document their critical parameters, including examples of outstanding structures that have recently been completed. The chapter dealing with stay technology has been thoroughly updated to take into account the new, better quality products available from cable suppliers. The results of extensive experimental investigations concerning cable stayed bridges with slender decks, mentioned briefly in the first edition, are also presented here. The state-of-the-art analysis, design and construction associated with this kind of structure is clearly described in this book, making it an invaluable tool for practicing engineers and for students. Cable Stayed Bridges provides an easy introduction to a new field in bridge construction and is the most comprehensive book available on the subject. Brief contents: Historical review; General design; Parametric study; Stay technology; Static design; Dynamic analysis; Examples of small and medium-span cable stayed bridges; Model tests of a cable stayed bridge with slender concrete deck.

It would house 35,000 residents and host 100,000 daily workers, students and visitors. This space-age city in the sky might seem like science fiction, but it answers some questions about where humans might live as our most crowded cities become even more densely populated. <<it is flash>>

The various code application examples of Volume I are organized in numerical order by 1997 UBC section number. To find an example for a particular provision of the code, look at the upper, outer corner of each page, or in the table of contents.
Volume I of the SEAOC Seismic Design Manual: Code Application Examples deals with interpretation and use of the seismic provisions of the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). The Seismic Design Manual is intended to help the reader understand and correctly use the UBC seismic provisions and to provide clear, concise, and graphic guidance on the application of specific provisions of the code. It primaril addresses the major seismic provisions of Chapter 16 of the UBC, with interpretation of specific provisions and examples highlighting their proper application. Volume I presents 55 examples that illustrate the application of specific seismic provisions of the UBC. Each example is a separate problem, or group of problems, and deals primarily with a single code provision. Each example begins with a description of the problem to be solved and a statement of given information. The problem is solved through the normal sequence of steps, each of which are illustrated in full. Appropriate code references for each step are identified in the right-hand margin of the page.

Composite construction, using a reinforced concrete slab on top of steel girders, is an economical and popular form of construction for highway bridges.
This book covers the design of continuous composite bridges, with both compact and non-compact sections, and simply supported composite bridges with the 'slab-on-beam' form of construction.
Design Guide for Composite Highway Bridges is a compilation of guidance previously given in separate SCI publications. As such it will act as an authoritative guide for new designers and as a reference text for the bridge design office.
