[Image: info.png]
Nick Barton (Author)

Product Details:
* Hardcover: 729 pages
* Publisher: Taylor & Francis; 1 edition (October 31, 2006)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0415394414
* ISBN-13: 9780415394413

Review:
"… a most important contribution from which both rock mechanics engineers and geophysicists will benefit immensely."
From: IJRMMS 44 (2007), 1172 - 1176

Product Description:
Seismic measurements take many forms, and have a universal role in the earth sciences. There are huge rewards to be gained from ‘seeing’ below the earth’s surface. This unique book describes seismic behaviour at many scales, and provides the appropriate interpretation in terms of rock mechanics.
Reviewing examples of seismic measurements from numerous fields in civil, mining, petroleum, geophysics, and tectonophysics, and stretching over ten orders of magnitude, the book considers seismic measurements from microcrack compliance in laboratory tests samples to crustal and mid-ocean ridge measurements, where the emphasis is on velocity-depth-age models. Between these extremes, Dr Barton covers in situ block tests, borehole stability, dam and bridge foundations, quarry blasting, transportation tunnels, rock caverns, nuclear waste repository studies and mine openings. The approach is cross-disciplinary and deliberately non-mathematical and phenomenological in nature, with a wealth of figures and a wide review of the literature from many earth science fields.
Intended for consultants, practitioners, university teachers and senior students in geophysics, geology and engineering geology who are engaged with the interpretation of seismic measurements in rock and petroleum engineering.

  ACI SP 208: Examples for the Design of Structural Concrete with Strut-and-Tie Models
Posted by: babak - 04-03-2009, 02:33 AM - Forum: ACI - Replies (12)

[Image: 3408613110_ea29e621a3_o.jpg]

Examples for the Design of Structural Concrete with Strut-and-Tie Models (SP-208) contains selected papers presented at the 2002 ACI Fall Convention in Phoenix by members of ACI Subcommittee 445-A, Shear and Torsion: Strut-and-Tie Models. The publication's primary purpose is to show engineers how to apply strut-and-tie modeling according to Appendix A. These papers will also give you insight into the development of Appendix A of ACI 318-02 and summarize important tests that confirm strut-and-tie modeling as a rational basis for the design of structural concrete.

"Strut-and-tie models are an excellent analysis tool for many design problems in concrete structures, and especially for discontinuity regions (D-regions)," says Karl-Heinz Reineck, editor of SP-208 and Chair of Subcommittee 445-A. "Where not properly analyzed and detailed, these regions can show damage or even result in brittle failure of the structure, as demonstrated by many cases."

SP-208 presents examples ranging from classical D-regions to unusual design situations, including:

Deep beams (with and without openings)
Dapped-end T-beam supported by an inverted T-beam
Corbels (double and at column)
Beam with indirect support and loading
Prestressed beams
Cable-stayed bridge pier table
High wall with two openings
Pile caps

Most of the examples have been taken from practice. In addition to explaining the approach of determining a model, they point out where problems can occur in dimensioning or in detailing and anchoring of the reinforcement and how the design could be improved.

The implementation of strut-and-tie-models in ACI 318-02 is a significant step toward more consistent design of structural concrete. SP-208 expands on the rules and guidelines given in the commentary to Appendix A by showing engineers how to apply these models in a variety of situations.

Developing and disseminating information on the best use of concrete has been the mission of ACI International for nearly a century. Founded in 1904, the international technical and educational society, headquartered in Farmington Hills, Mich., has 30,000 members and 94 chapters in 30 countries. ACI offers 14 certification programs for concrete practitioners, conducts more than 200 educational seminars annually, and produces more than 400 technical documents for improving the design, construction, maintenance, and repair of concrete structures.

  Bentley.SewerGEMS.V8i
Posted by: robertsas - 04-02-2009, 11:52 AM - Forum: Bentley Products - Replies (2)

General Description :

Some of the new features in SewerCAD V8i include:

Updated User Interface
The SewerCAD V8i graphical user interface has been completely redesigned to provide more flexibility and a better user experience. The workspace can be customized by dragging and resizing windows, or by docking them to the main display.
Data Connection and Import
Import SewerGEMS and StormCAD files. The included ModelBuilder module also allows users to import/export virtually any data source (spreadsheet, database, Shapefile, OLE DB connections, etc.).
AutoCAD 2009 Platform Support
SewerCAD V8i for AutoCAD supports the latest AutoCAD version, AutoCAD 2009. As a reminder, SewerCAD for AutoCAD includes support for both AutoCAD and MicroStation, as well as a stand-alone interface.
MicroStation V8i Platform Support
SewerCAD V8i is able to run on the MicroStation V8i platform. That means that all of the SewerCAD tools are available from within the MicroStation environment (so users can design and analyze a storm sewer system and review results without leaving MicroStation). MicroStation support is included in both SewerCAD Stand-Alone and SewerCAD for AutoCAD.
DATA MANAGEMENT

Active Topology Alternatives
The Active Topology feature allows SewerCAD users to set up different scenarios to examine various system expansion strategies. For example, a new subdivision can be made active in one scenario, and the resulting flows and hydraulic grade line elevations compared to another scenario in the same file where the new subdivision is inactive.
Automated Sewer Loads Allocation using LoadBuilder
The newly included LoadBuilder module helps modelers allocate sewer loads based on a variety of GIS-based sources, such as customer water use data, area-wide flow measurement, or polygons with known population or land use.
Terrain Extraction using Trex
The new Trex tool in SewerCAD is able to extract ground elevations from DXF files, Shapefiles or LandXML files, and assign those to junctions in the model.
Element Property Inferencing
Let SewerCAD interpolate missing data. For example, elevation data may be missing from a manhole or some property may be missing from a pipe. In such cases, SewerCAD's Element Property Inferencing tool can draw "inferences" about those values from property values from nearby elements.
Background Layer Support
SewerCAD now supports multiple background layers in each project. In addition, SewerCAD supports the following file types for use as background layers: DXF, Shapefile, Bitmap, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF and MrSID.
GIS-Style Symbology
Configure your model to display zoom-dependent symbol sizes that dynamically change while navigating your model.
Named Views
Define and save a named view, so that you can quickly and easily return to that same area of interest at any time.
Queries
Run a pre-defined query, or create your own, to isolate and select elements of interest (for example, all pipes where the average velocity is less than 2 ft/s).
Network Navigator
A powerful new utility to find and fix network topology and connectivity issues resulting from inconsistent source data.
Hyperlinks
Link digital photos, relevant documents, websites and other electronic files to elements within a SewerCAD model.
ANALYSIS AND OPERATIONS

Improved Controls with Control Management
The Control Manager manages all controls, conditions, actions, and control sets in the system. The Control Manager allows you to define controls using advanced IF, AND, and OR condition logic, which can trigger any number of THEN or optional ELSE actions.
Tractive Stress Calculations
Calculate the tractive stress for each pipe of your system and for each time-step (if you're running an Extended-Period Simulation). SewerCAD lets you know whether the tractive stress target has been exceeded.
Variable-Speed Pump Battery Element
Model complex batteries of variable speed pumps using a single simplified element that correctly models series and parallel installations as a whole.
System Head Curve
System head curves are a useful tool for visualizing the static and dynamic head for varying rates of discharge and various static head conditions. SewerCAD's System Head Curves manager allows users to create, edit, and manage system head curves.
RESULTS INTERPRETATION TOOLS

Contours
Quickly create a contour plot of model input (like ground elevations) or results (such as hydraulic grade line), and export these directly to MicroStation, AutoCAD, or DXF format.
New Engineering Profiles
Review your results dynamically with the customizable Standard Profiles, or set up your profile and profile's labels for construction drawing (DXF) export with the Engineering profiles.

By Achintya Haldar (Editor)

* Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
* Number Of Pages: 296
* Publication Date: 2006-02-01
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9812564195
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9789812564191
* Binding: Hardcover

Product Description:
Authored by the most active scholars in their respective areas, this volume covers the most recent developments, both theoretical and applicative, in multi-disciplinary reliability evaluation areas, many of which are cutting-edge and not discussed elsewhere in book form. The broad coverage includes the latest thoughts on design for low probability and high consequence events like the failure of the World Trade Center as well as risk acceptability based on the Life Quality Index. Other chapters discuss the development of the performance-based design concept, and the generally overlooked area of the reliability evaluation of bridges and offshore structures. Since the finite element method is routinely used for structural analyses, emphasis is put on discussing reliability evaluation using finite elements including consideration of the mesh-free finite element method. Corrosion and fatigue reliability evaluation techniques are other urgent issues that are dealt with in depth. Risk-based optimization using lifecycle cost analysis is presented. Among the many additional included topics, a chapter is devoted to health assessment of existing structures, currently one of the most active research areas.
