Next Generation of Super-Tall Buildings

info:
At Least 50 Tall Buildings Now on Hold
Construction of at least 50 tall buildings is on hold after initiation of foundation work, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Of the tallest 20, eight are in the Middle East, and six are in Latin America. Projects in the U.S. also are taking a hit. Foundations are complete for the 2,000-foot-tall Chicago Spire, by Santiago Calatrava, but work has been halted.

Classic, comprehensive, and up-to-date Metal Fatigue in Engineering Second Edition For twenty years, Metal Fatigue in Engineering has served as an important textbook and reference for students and practicing engineers concerned with the design, development, and failure analysis of components, structures, and vehicles subjected to repeated loading. Now this generously revised and expanded edition retains the best features of the original while bringing it up to date with the latest developments in the field. As with the First Edition, this book focuses on applied engineering design, with a view to producing products that are safe, reliable, and economical. It offers in-depth coverage of today's most common analytical methods of fatigue design and fatigue life predictions/estimations for metals. Contents are arranged logically, moving from simple to more complex fatigue loading and conditions. Throughout the book, there is a full range of helpful learning aids, including worked examples and hundreds of problems, references, and figures as well as chapter summaries and "design do's and don'ts" sections to help speed and reinforce understanding of the material. The Second Edition contains a vast amount of new information, including:
* Enhanced coverage of micro/macro fatigue mechanisms, notch strain analysis, fatigue crack growth at notches, residual stresses, digital prototyping, and fatigue design of weldments
* Nonproportional loading and critical plane approaches for multiaxial fatigue
* A new chapter on statistical aspects of fatigue

The Finite Element Method and Applications in Engineering Using ANSYS®

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The Finite Element Method and Applications with ANSYS® provides the reader with theoretical and practical knowledge of the finite element method and with the skills required to analyze engineering problems with ANSYS®, a commercially available FEA program. This self-contained, introductory text minimizes the need for additional reference material, covering the fundamental topics in finite element methods as well as advanced topics concerning modeling and analysis with ANSYS®. These topics are introduced through extensive examples from various engineering disciplines, presented in a step-by-step fashion. The book focuses on the use of ANSYS® through both the Graphics User Interface (GUI) and the ANSYS® Parametric Design Language (APDL).

The text details more than 40 example problems, with solutions demonstrated in a step-by-step fashion, primarily through the use of GUI and, to a lesser extent, APDL.

Furthermore, it includes a CD-ROM with the "input" files for the example problems so that readers can regenerate them on their own computers, as well as the colored figures and screen shots.

Students, researchers, and practicing engineers will find this an essential reference for use in predicting and simulating the physical behavior of complex engineering systems using ANSYS®.

Construction Practice for Composite Slabs

info:
Good Construction Practice for Composite Slabs
ECCS Publication 73

This document is written for designers, architects, site engineers, foremen, operatives, building owners and potential customers. This includes personnel concerned with steel, concrete and other sub-contractors. Only a general knowledge of building construction is assumed. As such, every effort has been made to eliminate all formula and background theory. Construction techniques, practices and values are not particular to any decking. This document contains rules and practices covering most decking available on the European market and for the majority of their potential uses.
A list of essential information that should be available to site personnel is given. Example drawings specifically for composite slabs are provided. Instructions on the proper way to receive, store and lift decking bundles are reviewed. Good practices for panel placement and fastening to the underlying frame are presented. Additional fastening needed when panels are used as in-plane bracing are included. Typical construction loads that are placed on the decking when used as a temporary working platform are listed. Essential information on permanent and temporary supports is presented. Proper installation techniques for shear connectors are reviewed. This review includes both shot-fired cold-formed angles and welded headed studs. Shear connectors needed when constructing in seismic regions is covered. Typical interior and exterior edge details are given. Common practices for openings, both large and small are reviewed. Reinforcement practices and requirements are listed. This includes mesh reinforcement, additional positive and negative moment reinforcement, reinforcement near openings and additional reinforcement for fire resistance. Concrete types, concreting practices and concrete construction loads are detailed. This includes concrete placement by pumping and by skip. Practices which should be observed when attaching brackets and services are reviewed, Typical construction loads that may be placed on the composite slab after curing are reviewed. Lastly, the proper installation of thermal, acoustic and fire insulation are presented.

Edition: Illustrated
Publisher: Springer, 2005
ISBN: 1402036604, 9781402036606
Length: 527 pages
Pdf: 30 Mb

This book provides information about the application of Structural Health Monitoring technologies to civil engineering structures including buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams, and pavements. The book is unique as it covers application of a broad spectrum of sensors for monitoring of cracks, deformations, loads, and other types of structural anomalies. The range of sensors covered includes conventional as well as novel sensors such as resistance type strain gauges, PZT, magnetic, fiber optics and smart materials. The book describes post earthquake structural health monitoring of historic structures such as masonry towers, real time monitoring of modem cable stayed structures and various construction materials including steel, concrete, and fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRP). It covers distributed and multiplexing schemes for monitoring of large structures, data acquisition and processing as well as techniques for interpretation of data. Factory Planning Manual

Info:
Authors: Michael Schenk, Siegfried Wirth, Egon Müller
Edition: Illustrated
Publisher: Springer, 2009
ISBN: 3642036341, 9783642036347
Length: 410 pages
Pdf: 11.4 Mb

This book describes the factory planning process with its manifold practical characteristics. Previous planning approaches only emanate from the product model. Future plannings need to allow for dissimilarity of an individual factory more strongly, i.e. the factory will feature even more individual characteristics according to its position in the value-added chain. With the methodology presented in the book new factory types can be realized according to the respective requirements. The described methodology has been developed by the authors. Being an extendible concept, it is very useful for the permanent excess planning, rescheduling and replanning of factories.
