Frequency-Domain Approach for Calculating
Wind-Induced Vibration and Aeroelastic Stability Characteristics

Risto Kiviluoma: Frequency-Domain Approach for Calculating Wind-Induced Vibration and Aeroelastic Stability Characteristics of Long-Span Bridges

Doctoral dissertation at Helsinki University of Technology

The frequency-domain approach is applied to the aerodynamic and aeroelastic analysis of long-span bridges. Numerical models are deduced for the simultaneous buffeting and flutter analysis and for the vortex and signature turbulence induced response calculation.
The goal, considered to be achieved, is to develop numerical models capable to reliable parametric studies of detailed three-dimensional structural models of bridges. For the models, semi-empirical approach based on aerodynamic data obtained through section model tests in a wind tunnel, is employed. The data consists of the steady aerodynamic coefficients and flutter derivatives of a deck
segment to be used in the buffeting and flutter analysis. A complemental data is suggested to be extracted for the
vortex and signature turbulence induced response calculation.
The simultaneous analysis model for buffeting and flutter uses theoretically complete coupled-mode approach in which most of the unintentional simplifications of earlier models are removed. It has merits for the non-iterative calculation of flutter characteristics and feasibility to efficient computer implementation. The vortex-induced response calculation is based on the band-limited white-noise excitation model while the signature-turbulence model employs approach typical in simplified buffeting analysis of bridge girders. The
vortex-induced vibration calculation model facilitates imperfect spanwise correlation and turbulence reduction effects through mutually simple mathematical formulation. To obtain aerodynamic input parameters for the verification study, wind tunnel tests for the spring supported section model are carried out in a smooth flow. The Instrumental variable method is formulated for acceleration signals and used on evaluating flutter derivatives through coupled-motion experiments. To verify the numerical models, the calculated responses of the Raippaluoto and Kärkinen Bridges, two cable-stayed bridges in Finland involving double I-girder steel-concrete composite deck, are compared with the on-site measurements. Here, the responses and the wind turbulence data are measured on three occasions during storm and strong winds in 1999-2000.

  Japan´s E-Defense Shaking Table Test
Posted by: faros3000 - 11-08-2009, 09:23 PM - Forum: Famous Projects - No Replies

[attachment=1017]E-DEFENSE

About JAPAN´s E-DEFENSE:

NIED has been constructing 3-D Full-Scale Earthquake Testing Facility, nicknamed "E-Defense" in the city of Miki, to the north of Kobe. Construction of this facility began in 1999 and will be completed in 2005. Therefore, this facility will begin to make its contribution ten years after the Hyogoken Nanbu (Kobe)Earthquake.
The world's largest shaking table, which can simulate high level ground motions, is taking shape in Japan. The opportunities and challenges provided through this facility are great. It will be a focus of full-scale testing of structures due to high-intensity earthquakes. It is a vehicle through which hope and optimism for improving the behavior of urban regions due to earthquakes will get an added boost.

The 4-story steel structure listed there was subject to a very interesting performance based engineering study by Deierlein et al, and the results just appeared in the latest issue of EERI´s Earthquake Spectra:

Abstract: A welded steel moment-frame building is used to assess performance-based engineering guidelines. The full-scale four-story building was shaken to collapse on the E-Defense shake table in Japan. The collapse mode was a side-sway mechanism in the first story, which occurred in spite of a strong-column and weak-beam design. Computer analyses were conducted to simulate the building response during the experiment. The building was then evaluated using the Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings (ASCE-41) and Seismic Evaluation and Upgrade Criteria for Existing Welded Steel Moment-Frame Buildings (FEMA-351) for the collapse prevention performance level via linear and nonlinear procedures. The guidelines had mixed results regarding the characterization of collapse, and no single approach was superior. They mostly erred on the safe side by predicting collapse at shaking intensities less than that in the experiment. Recommendations are made for guideline improvements. ©2009 Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.

  a challenge
Posted by: darren421 - 11-08-2009, 11:59 AM - Forum: Archive - Replies (8)

as I told in other part of this forum, I think that all members like me ( working all day to get some money in pocket ) haven't so much time ( & $$$ ) to follow courses in the right way , but wish to become a
civil engineer, are looking to this forum as a main source of information and education. So that the 'inactive user' status should be quite common as I spend the most of my (free) time reading what other people are saying or downloading some software just to see how some problem are managed. I'm also a bit worried about the skill ( mine ) , I prefer keep silent while hear from other instead to say nonsense. Don't loose the forum membership it's important for me, but I ( and members like me ) need more time.
Challenge is :
I feel this forum really useful and of a certain professional skill .
Could experienced ( or professionals ) members become tutor ( better a 'Mentore' ) for members like me ? That's what I'm searching for , more than looking in software section.

My apologize to all could find this post stupid or worst offensive, but who loves science can understand .

Regards
Darren
