Dictionary of Mining, Mineral, and Related Terms

Author: American Geological Institute, US Bureau of Mines | Size: 9.1 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: AGI / Sрringеr | Year: 1997/2010 | pages: 3360 | ISBN: 0922152365 9780922152360 3642056814 9783642056819

This edition, containing some 28,500 terms, is not meant to be exhaustive in its coverage. It focuses on mining-related terms and excludes such related categories as ceramics, glass, metallurgy, petroleum, and other specialized disciplines.

It is the culmination not only standard mining-related terms but also terms in peripheral areas, such as the environment, marine mining, leaching, pollution, automation, health and safety. Many of these terms now have a legal definition based on law or regulation.

  Watershed Dynamics
Posted by: ska51 - 09-15-2011, 09:12 AM - Forum: Water & Hydraulic Engineering - No Replies

Watershed Dynamics

Author: William S. Carlsen et al. | Size: 3.10 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: National Science Teachers Association | Year: 2004 | pages: 175 | ISBN: 087355213X

Description:

Whether you re a stream studies novice or a veteran aquatic monitor, Watershed Dynamics gives you abundant practical resources to extend your students investigations into local water quality and land-use issues. This two-part set is ideal for teaching biological and ecological concepts and research techniques. It also shows how the interplay between scientific data and human judgment can shape public policy decisions on zoning, flood control, and agricultural practices.

The Student Edition is organized into four parts: (1) an introduction to watersheds, land use, streams, and related research; (2) 10 protocols with specific instruction on research techniques related to watersheds; (3) field studies and experiments that guide students through interactive research projects using the protocols; and (4) an engineering design challenge in which students develop a device to treat simulated stormwater runoff. Included throughout are plentiful forms that provide both structure and flexibility as they guide students through each research step. Watershed Dynamics is the final volume in the four-part Cornell Scientific Inquiry Series, designed to guide students in designing and conducting experiments, presenting their results, and exchanging feedback with their peers. See the other titles in the series: Decay and Renewal, Assessing Toxic Risk, and Invasion Ecology. Ideas For Use Public participation in water resource management requires public understanding about how water functions in natural communities, and how human activities affect the distribution and quality of this precious resource. One challenge a fascinating one is that just as watersheds do not respect political boundaries, watershed science does not respect disciplinary boundaries. Understanding watersheds from a policy perspective requires understanding biology, chemistry, Earth sciences, mathematics, sociology, economics, politics...the list goes on and on. For that reason, the interdisciplinary study of watersheds is often considered an advanced topic. We believe, however, that if it is approached as a foundational topic, it can provide wonderful opportunities for original research research that matters to communities of all kinds. Water and Wastewater Systems Analysis (Developments in Water Science)

Author: David Stephenson | Size: 3.0 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: Elsevier Science Ltd | Year: 1988 | pages: 232 | ISBN: 044442945X & 9780444429452

Product Description:

This book provides a sound basis for analysing water supply schemes from the point of view of water quality. A systematic approach to decision making in water resources planning is presented with particular reference to wastewater re-use. Methods for deciding between recycling, purification or use of river water are given. The problems of poor quality water are documented and alternatives suggested, including management in a way to achieve objectives in the most economic manner. Various methods of system simulation and optimization are applied in a number of case studies. Methods of analysis and numerical methods are described, as well as the basis of pollution and water quality. The economics of desalination are also discussed. The examples studied range from regional supplies to internal re-circulation. Groundwater and artificial recharge are considered, and stormwater quality and sewerage systems are also covered. Computer applications exist throughout and a number of simulation and optimization programs in BASIC are presented.
