Guidelines for Inspection and Strength Evaluation of Suspension Bridge Parallel Wire Cables
Author: Mayrbaurl, R M | Size: 8.98 MB | Format:PDF | Quality:Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2004 | pages: - | ISBN: 0309088097
There are nearly 50 major suspension bridges in the United States, and more than half of them are more than 50 years old. To date there has been no reliable and nationally recognized procedure, either practical or theoretical, to inspect and evaluate the condition and strength of suspension bridge parallel-wire cables. This report contains recommendations for the inspection and strength evaluation of suspension bridge parallel-wire cables. It will be of immediate interest to suspension bridge owners and suspension bridge main cable inspectors. An accompanying CD-ROM contains a full account of the research leading to the development of the recommended guidelines and provides derivations of all equations.

Optimal Timing of Pavement Preventive Maintenance Treatment Applications
Author: Peshkin, D G Hoerner, T E Zimmerman, K A | Size: 967 KB | Format:PDF | Quality:Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2004 | pages: 84 | ISBN: 0309088119
This report describes a methodology for determining the optimal timing for the application of preventive maintenance treatments to flexible and rigid pavements. The methodology is also presented in the form of a macro-driven Microsoft (registered trademark) Excel Visual Basic Application--designated OPTime--available to users by accessing the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) website (http://trb.org/news/blurb_detail.asp?id=4306). The methodology is based on the analysis of performance and cost data and applies to any of the treatments and application methods that are used by highway agencies. A plan for constructing and monitoring experimental test sections is also provided to assist highway agencies in collecting the necessary data if such data are not readily available. The report is a useful resource for state and local highway agency personnel and others involved in pavement maintenance and preservation.

Guidelines for Early-Opening-to-Traffic Portland Cement Concrete for Pavement Rehabilitation
Author: Van Dam, T J | Size: 377 KB | Format:PDF | Quality:Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2005 | pages: 36 | ISBN: 0309088356
This report presents guidelines to facilitate highway agencies' use of "early-opening-to-traffic" (EOT) concrete for pavement rehabilitation, thereby reducing pavement closure and accruing economic and environmental benefits. These guidelines address the proportioning, testing, construction, and other aspects of EOT concrete. This report will be of particular interest to engineers, researchers, and others concerned with the construction and rehabilitation of concrete pavements. Chapter headings are as follows: Introduction; State of the Practice for EOT Concrete Repairs; Performance Considerations Related to the Durability of EOT Concrete; Materials and Mixture Design Considerations; and Testing of Fresh and Hardened Concrete.

This report describes the transportation planning process and discusses where and how environmental factors can be addressed effectively at the state and metropolitan levels. This report should be especially useful to federal, state department of transportation (DOT), metropolitan planning organization (MPO), and local transportation planners, as well as other practitioners concerned with addressing environmental factors within transportation systems planning, priority programming, and project development planning leading to implementation. The research focused on environmental issues within the long-range transportation planning processes of state DOTs and MPOs and included the following: (1) a comprehensive review of recent literature; (2) a survey of approaches employed by state DOTs, MPOs, and environmental regulatory agencies; (3) a review of federal regulations and guidance on environmental factors; and (4) case studies to synthesize current practice in environmental planning.

Simplified Shear Design of Structural Concrete Members
Author: Hawkins, Neil M | Size: 3.16 MB | Format:PDF | Quality:Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2005 | pages: 62 | ISBN: 0309088445
This report contains the findings of research performed to develop practical equations for design of shear reinforcement in reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge girders. Recommended specifications, commentary, and examples illustrating application of the specifications were also developed. The material in this report will be of immediate interest to bridge designers. The objective of this research was to supplement the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methods for shear design with procedures providing a direct solution for transverse and longitudinal reinforcement of concrete structures of common proportions. This work focused on development of resistance equations that yield unique solutions with defined limits of applicability. The recommended equations are similar in format and application to the resistance equations currently found in the AASHTO Standard Specifications. The equations apply to conventional structure types such as reinforced concrete T-beams, prestressed concrete I girders continuous for live load, prestressed concrete box beams, cast-in-place post-tensioned box girders, hammerhead piers and footings, and multi-post reinforced concrete bents and footings. The recommendations for additions to the LRFD specifications apply to precast concrete strengths up to 18 ksi and cast-in-place concrete strengths up to 10 ksi.
