Review of Truck Characteristics as Factors in Roadway Design

Review of Truck Characteristics as Factors in Roadway Design

Author: Harwood, D W Torbic, D J Richard, K R Glauz, W D Elefteriadou, Lily | Size: 5.09 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2003 | pages: 194 | ISBN: 0309087791

This report presents guidance for roadway geometric designers on how best to accommodate large trucks on the U.S. highway system. Under National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 15-21, a research team reviewed the range of dimensions and performance characteristics of trucks currently used on U.S. highways and predicted how these characteristics may change in response to current political, economic, and technological trends. The research team conducted an analysis of those geometric design features affected by vehicle characteristics and then evaluated the adequacy of current geometric design policy to accommodate the current and anticipated truck fleet. Based on the findings, the report makes recommendations for a number of changes to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) "Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets" ("Green Book"). The report (1) provides valuable guidance for designers of roads and facilities that need to accommodate large trucks and (2) will assist AASHTO in updating geometric design policy. The information developed in this project will also be useful as input to future editions of other documents such as the Transportation Research Board (TRB) "Highway Capacity Manual," the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices," and the AASHTO "Roadside Design Guide."

Simple Performance Tester for Superpave Mix Design: First-Article Development and Evaluation

Author: Bonaquist, R F Christensen, D W Stump III, W | Size: 2.96 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2003 | pages: 168 | ISBN: 0309087821

This report presents the findings of a research project to develop a practical, economical simple performance tester for use in routine Superpave mix design and possibly in the characterization of hot mix asphalt (HMA) materials for pavement structural design. In the phase of the work reported here, first-article simple performance testers (SPTs) procured from two different manufacturers were evaluated, and both units were found to meet the requirements of the performance-based purchase specification. Based on these results, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is coordinating a pooled-fund purchase of production units for evaluation by the state highway agencies. Four of these units will be immediately purchased in the next phase of this project for use by state highway agencies and FHWA to test the ruggedness of candidate simple performance tests. Thus, the report will be of particular interest to materials engineers in state highway agencies, as well as to materials suppliers and paving contractor personnel responsible for design and production of hot mix asphalt and the specification and purchase of laboratory test equipment.

NCHRP - R506 Quality and Accuracy of Positional Data in Transportation

Quality and Accuracy of Positional Data in Transportation

Author: Fekpe, E S Windholz, T Beard, K Novak, K | Size: 2.82 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2003 | pages: 108 | ISBN: 0309087813

This report presents guidance for practitioners on the use of positional, or spatial, data in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for transportation applications. As GIS applications become more common in transportation system management and decision making, concerns have grown about the accuracy of the data used to populate them. Transportation spatial data usually describes the location of features on the highway system using a one-dimensional linear referencing system. The level of accuracy varies by data source and is affected by the precision of the measurement system used to collect it. Agencies need a way to understand the errors that may result when using these data in GIS applications and how these errors may be compounded when combining data from various sources. This project reviewed the linear referencing systems used by state departments of transportation, examined the limitations of typical data sources used in these systems, and developed a model to evaluate the effects of varying data accuracy and provide an assessment of the level of confidence in the system outputs. This report will provide valuable information to transportation practitioners who need to understand and account for the level of precision in GIS-based transportation decision tools.

Accelerated Pavement Testing: Data Guidelines

Author: Saeed, A Hall Jr, J W | Size: 377 KB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2003 | pages: 56 | ISBN: 030908783X

This report provides definitions and guidelines to help agencies involved in accelerated pavement testing (APT) ensure proper interpretation of the data and facilitate their use by other agencies. Use of these guidelines will promote compatibility of data resulting from APT at different facilities and will provide an effective means for economically addressing issues of common concern, reducing duplication of research efforts, and enhancing the benefits of APT. The report is a useful resource for pavement and materials engineers, researchers, and others involved in the accelerated evaluation of pavement materials, designs, and features.

Extending Span Ranges of Precast Prestressed Concrete Girders
Posted by: mahyarov - 10-24-2012, 09:15 AM - Forum: Concrete - No Replies

Extending Span Ranges of Precast Prestressed Concrete Girders

Author: Castrodale, R W White, C D | Size: 24.14 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2004 | pages: - | ISBN: 0309087872

This report contains the findings of research performed to develop recommended load and resistance factor design (LRFD) procedures for achieving longer spans using precast prestressed concrete bridge girders. Standard details and examples illustrating the design of three typical bridges were also developed. The material in this report will be of immediate interest to bridge designers. Each year, 200 to 300 bridges are built with spans exceeding 160 feet. Generally, these spans are not designed with precast prestressed concrete girders because of limited experience and limited information. In addition, the size and weight of many precast sections precludes land transportation. Limited choices lead to decreased competition between bridge types and materials, which results in higher costs to owners. Solutions to increase the span range of precast prestressed concrete girders used in the United States and abroad include splicing segments for longer simple or continuous spans, connecting simple spans for continuity, and assembling haunched pier segments in the field. However, this experience and the technology for applying these solutions are fragmented and job-specific. The objective of this research was to develop recommended LRFD procedures, standard details, and design examples for achieving longer spans using precast prestressed concrete bridge girders. The report fully documents the research leading to the conclusion that spliced-girders are the design option with the greatest potential for extending span length. Detailed design examples for one-, two-, and three-span spliced girder bridges are included as appendixes.

Safety Evaluation of Permanent Raised Pavement Markers

Author: Bahar, G Mollett, C Persaud, B Lyon, C Smiley, A Smahel, T McGee, H | Size: 816 KB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Transportation Research Board | Year: 2004 | pages: 68 | ISBN: 0309087902

This report presents the findings of a research project to evaluate the safety performance of snowplowable permanent raised pavement markers (PRPMs) on two-lane roadways and four-lane freeways. An analytical engineering procedure relying on safety performance functions or crash prediction models for roadways with and without PRPMs was developed to determine the potential cost-effectiveness of implementing PRPMs at a location. The report will be of particular interest to traffic engineers with responsibility for installing and maintaining pavement marking systems.
