Strength and Related Properties of Concrete: A Quantitative Approach
by
Sándor Popovics

Wiley, 23-Mar-1998 - 535 pages

Quantitative tools for evaluating and improving the strength of concrete

Concrete is a complex material of vital importance to the civil engineering and construction industries. Strength and Related Properties of Concrete addresses the most important single property of concrete--its strength--with the goal of contributing to concrete's technical and economical improvement. The book is unique in containing, in a single volume, all of the quantitative tools needed to evaluate, understand, and improve concrete quality.

This hands-on guide demonstrates how to fine-tune the composition of concrete to maximize its strength. It presents the best numerical relationships for concrete technology that are currently available, examines them experimentally, and illustrates their practical applications. It also provides a basis for improving both the fundamentals of concrete technology and the way this technology is taught to engineering students. Computerized formulas for strength testing are included on a floppy disk.

Topics covered include:
* Proven methods for testing compressive strength
* Important relationships between composition and strength of concrete
* Timely applications of advanced cement-based materials
* Elastic deformations of concrete
* Essential properties of cement pastes

Dams and Reservoirs under Changing Challenges
Posted by: smode - 12-31-2012, 10:23 AM - Forum: Archive - No Replies

Dams and Reservoirs under Changing Challenges
Anton J. Schleiss (Editor), Robert M. Boes (Editor)

ISBN-10: 0415682673 | ISBN-13: 978-0415682671
Publisher: CRC Press; 1 edition (May 18, 2011)
Language: English

Book Description :

In the past, boundary conditions in the building of dams have changed, as technological developments have been influential on dam planning, construction, operation and maintenance processes. It is ICOLD’s mission to not only consider these developments but also adequately deal with environmental aspects and related infrastructure issues. Altered water cycles, more extreme weather conditions and an increasing number of natural hazards clearly affect the safe and economical operation of dams and reservoirs. Moreover, emission-free hydropower production as the most important form of “liquid” solar energy and the provision of water for irrigation and potable water supply is becoming more and more important to meet the world’s fast growing demand for energy and food in a sustainable way.

Dams and Reservoirs Under Changing Challenges covers subjects ranging from dam engineering through the benefits and drawbacks of dams, including the latest developments dealing with dams and reservoirs under changing environmental and socioeconomic conditions. It is a valuable resource for professional and dam engineers, water manager, governmental organizations and commercial consultants responsible for dam design and management.

Japan's Beach Erosion: Reality and Future Measures

Japan's Beach Erosion: Reality and Future Measures

Author: Takaaki Uda | Size: 11.01 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company | Year: 2010 | pages: 428 | ISBN: 9814277126, 9789814277129

Beaches in Japan have been eroding since the 1970s as a result of the artificial land alterations. Approximately 3000 fishing ports and 1000 commercial ports have been built nationwide, as well as 2532 large dams being constructed in the upstream basins of large rivers. Due to the port and dam developments, fluvial sand supply has significantly reduced resulting in shoreline recession around the river mouths. Continuous sand supply along the coastline has also been obstructed by the port breakwaters. The formation of wave shelter zone by the port breakwaters induce longshore sand transport, thereby leading to an accretion of large amount of sand in the wave shelter zone and erosion in the surrounding area. Thus, almost all causes of the beach erosion in Japan are due to anthropogenic factors. The exact situation of the beach erosion has never been clear in literatures that are written in Japanese, or in English. Coastal engineers can and should learn from these results, otherwise the same situation and problems, which were induced by excessive coastal development without protection measures and due attention given to nearby coasts, will recur throughout the world.

Textbooks on coastal engineering, that were already published, describe only the theoretical fundamentals of the subject, but lack the practical perspectives and field studies. The book examines many coastal areas as examples, highlighting the various erosion factors which should be avoided elsewhere globally. This book was first published in Japanese in 2004, and was translated into English by the present author.

Advances in Coastal Modeling, Volume 67

Author: V.C. Lakhan | Size: 45.3 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Elsevier Science | Year: 2003 | pages: 614 | ISBN: 0444511490, 9780444511492

This book unifies and enhances the accessibility of contemporary scholarly research on advances in coastal modeling. A comprehensive spectrum of innovative models addresses the wide diversity and multifaceted aspects of coastal research on the complex natural processes, dynamics, interactions and responses of the coastal supersystem and its associated subsystems.

The twenty-one chapters, contributed by internationally recognized coastal experts from fourteen countries, provide invaluable insights on the recent advances and present state-of-the-art knowledge on coastal models which are essential for not only illuminating the governing coastal process and various characteristics, but also for understanding and predicting the dynamics at work in the coastal system.

One of the unique strengths of the book is the impressive and encompassing presentation of current functional and operational coastal models for all those concerned with and interested in the modeling of seas, oceans and coasts. In addition to chapters modeling the dynamic natural processes of waves, currents, circulatory flows and sediment transport there are also chapters that focus on the modeling of beaches, shorelines, tidal basins and shore platforms.

The substantial scope of the book is further strengthened with chapters concentrating on the effects of coastal structures on nearshore flows, coastal water quality, coastal pollution, coastal ecological modeling, statistical data modeling, and coupling of coastal models with geographical information systems.
