Constructing a Bridge: An Exploration of Engineering Culture, Design
448 pages | Dec 12, 1999 |ISBN:0262112175 | PDF | 6 Mb
Product Description:
If it is true, as Tocqueville suggested, that social and class systems shape technology, research, and knowledge, then the effects should be visible both at the individual level and at the level of technical institutions and local environments. That is the central issue addressed in Constructing a Bridge, a tale of two cultures that investigates how national traditions shape technological communities and their institutions and become embedded in everyday engineering practice.

This new edition of an informative and accessible book guides building surveyors and facilities managers through the key aspects of property maintenance and continues to be of value to both students and practitioners.
With the increasing cost of new-build, effective maintenance of existing building stock is becoming ever more important and building maintenance work now represents nearly half of total construction output in the UK.
Building Maintenance Management provides a comprehensive profile of the many aspects of property maintenance. This second edition has been updated throughout, with sections on outsourcing; maintenance planning; benchmarking and KPIs; and current trends in procurement routes (including partnering and the growth of PFI) integrated into the text. There is also a new chapter on the changing context within which maintenance is carried out, largely concerned with its relationship to facilities management. More coverage is given of maintenance organisations and there are major updates to relevant aspects of health and safety and to contract forms.

Can anyone tell me what would be the best approach to compute the ground peak acceleration (Agmax) for a potential liquefaction project I am working on.
The Way I compute Agmax is using Donovan“s Approach (1973) in which Agmax is function of EQ magnitude and epicenter. This is the only approach I know but I am not sure if this is the most widely accepted / used.
If anyone got any imput about this, please let me know.
Very Very Sorry If I am writing in the wrong section, as I am new userm please forgive me.
I am PG student in Structural Engineering in India, I am currently engaged in the preparation of my final-year dissertation, regarding the applications of IS 1893 Part 4 : 2005 & the seismic behavior & aseismic design of tall reinforced concrete chimneys.
All please note that I am stuck with the unavailability of some of the technical literature.
Please, find the list of the technical papers, which I am in very much need of:
1.) Title - Vibration Of Chimneys
author -Chandrasekaran, A. R.
Cement And Concrete Journal,1970 (Publisher-LAlokudyog Cement Service), New Delhi.
2.) Title - SEC-03-02-Seismic/wind analysis of a reinforced concrete chimney-comparative study of A.C.I & IS Codes
authors -V. S. Phani Kanth, R. C. Jain & S. Ramanujam
Structural Engineering Convention,IIT Kharagpur,December, 2003.
3.) Title - Seismic Design of Tall chimney using IS: 1893-2002 & IS: 1893-Draft, (Part-4) code
authors -Doris M. Mehta & Dr Atul K Desai,
International conference on earthquake engineering (ICEE 2006) Sastra,
Thanjavur, Tamilnadu; 25-26 Feb 2006, pp. 315-325.
4.) Title - Earthquake response of tall chimneys
authors - A. S. Arya & D. K. Paul
Proceedings of 6th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, Volume 2, 1977, pages-1247-1259.
5.) Title - Design of Reinforced Concrete Chimneys for Earthquake Forces
authors -Javeed Munshi
ASCE Conf. Proc. 314, 183 (2008), [DOI:10.1061/41016(314)183]
6.)Title - Evaluation of Concrete Chimneys Designed According to ACI 307 Standard
Authors - Javeed Munshi, Sungjin Bae, Carlos Coronado, Jie Li, and Ossama Ali,
ASCE Conf. Proc. 341, 108 (2009), DOI:10.1061/41031(341)108
7.)Title - Seismic Design of Concrete Chimneys --- State of Practice
Authors - Javeed Munshi and Sanj Malushte
ASCE Conf. Proc. 248, 61 (2007), DOI:10.1061/40946(248)61
Again, please upload any relevant literature pertaining to the use of IS 1893 Part 4 2005 & ACI 307-08 with reference to seismic analysis & aseismic design of reinforced concrete chimneys
Please I request all of you, to help me out with these findings.
I pray to the All Mighty God to bless to all those to help me; as I got no temptations to offer in these matters.

Product Description:
This proceedings volume contains over 300 papers on rock mechanics and engineering with contributors from all over Asia and many other parts of the world. Seven keynote papers summarize the state-of-the-art in rock engineering including topics such as underground rock caverns. The technical papers cover a wide range of rock mechanics and engineering topics such as: rock tunnels, caverns, mining, rock slopes and dams, rock blasting, rock burst and failure, rock properties, rock mass, rock joints, and block theory. Numerous valuable rock engineering case studies are also reported. This volume should serve as a useful reference for the engineers and researchers in rock mechanics and rock engineering.

Earthquake Spectra, the professional journal of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI),
is published quarterly in both printed and online editions in February, May, August, and November.
The printed edition is sent to EERI members as part of their membership benefits.
EERI established Earthquake Spectra with the purpose of improving the practice of earthquake hazards mitigation, preparedness, and recovery.
It is intended to serve the informational needs of the diverse professionals engaged in
earthquake loss reduction: civil, geotechnical, mechanical, and structural engineers; geologists, seismologists,
and other earth scientists; architects and city planners; public officials; social scientists; and researchers in all these disciplines.
Spectra serves as the publication of record for the development of earthquake engineering practice, earthquake codes and regulations,
earthquake public policy, and earthquake investigation reports. Manuscripts published in Earthquake Spectra are peer reviewed.
Periodically, EERI publishes special issues of Earthquake Spectra, either as theme issues or as reconnaissance reports on major earthquakes.

Product Description:
Spanish Colonial missions and Mexican rancho and pueblo adobe structures are among California's earliest existing structures and the only above-ground remains of the state's original settlement by the Spanish and Mexican people. The Northridge earthquake brought about tragic losses to a number of these historic buildings. It also provided a rare opportunity to assess the damage that can occur as the result of a large earthquake. As part of the Getty Conservation Institute's commitment to researching conservation measures for adobe structures, this study surveys the damage to the buildings and evaluates their seismic performance. The ultimate goal is to use the lessons learned from this earthquake and the retrofit research to help understand and so limit the risks earthquakes pose to these treasures in the future.
