North Holland 2004-11-20
ISBN: 0444515569
680 pages PDF 3,8 Mb
The Handbook of Mathematical Fluid Dynamics is a compendium of essays that provides a survey of the major topics in the subject. Each article traces developments, surveys the results of the past decade, discusses the current state of knowledge and presents major future directions and open problems. Extensive bibliographic material is provided. The book is intended to be useful both to experts in the field and to mathematicians and other scientists who wish to learn about or begin research in mathematical fluid dynamics. The Handbook illuminates an exciting subject that involves rigorous mathematical theory applied to an important physical problem, namely the motion of fluids.

Presented here are over 30 papers exploring innovative solutions to the analysis of traffic and transportation problems through use of the models, methods and analyses both existent and under development. Issues of safety, mobility, efficiency, productivity, planning and the environment are of increasing concern worldwide and are addressed here through the prism of the various methods and models available. The book is divided into ten sections which follow the same session order as the Symposium: Traffic Flow Models, Traffic Flow Behaviour, Road Safety and Pedestrians, Flow Evaluation on Road Networks, Traffic Assignment, Traffic Demand, Forecasting and Decision Tools, Traffic Simulation, Traffic Information and Control, Road Tolling and Parking Balance, Traveller Survey and Transit Planning.

Understanding Environmental Pollution 3rd Ed Marquita K. Hill
Understanding Environmental Pollution Third Edition
Marquita K. Hill
Publisher: University
ISBN 0521518660 2010
PDF 608 pages 5.6 MB
The third edition of this well-received textbook delivers a concise overview of global and individual environmental pollution for undergraduate courses, presenting students with the tools to assess environmental issues. With more than 30% new material, Hill assesses pollution from an international perspective, including air and water pollution, global warming, energy, solid and hazardous waste, and pollution at home. Both the sources and impacts of pollution are addressed, as well as governmental, corporate, and personal responsibility for pollution, and pollution prevention is emphasized throughout. Non-technical language encourages greater understanding of these often complex issues, and thought-provoking 'Delving Deeper' exercises are included, increasing engagement with the text and enabling students to apply what they have learned. A new chapter on the basics of pollution links to sections on toxicology and risk assessment, helping students understand concerns over chemicals and their regulation. An essential review of environmental pollution for environmental science students.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigations of Steel-Fibrous Concrete ( Series in Geomechanics and Geoengineering)

Concrete is still the most widely used construction material since it has the lowest ratio between cost and strength as compared to other available materials. However, it has two undesirable properties, namely: low tensile strength and large brittleness that cause the collapse to occur shortly after the formation of the first crack. To improve these two negative properties and to achieve a partial substitute of conventional reinforcement, an addition of short discontinuous randomly oriented steel fibres can be practiced among others. In spite of positive properties, fibrous concrete did not find such acknowledgment and application as usual concrete. There do not still exist consistent dimensioning rules due to the lack sufficient large-scale static and dynamic experiments taking into account the effect of the fibre orientation. The intention of the book is twofold: first to summarize the most important mechanical and physical properties of steel-fibre-added concrete and reinforced concrete on the basis of numerous experiments described in the scientific literature, and second to describe a quasi-static fracture process at meso-scale both in plain concrete and fibrous concrete using a novel discrete lattice model. In 2D and 3D simulations of fibrous concrete specimens under uniaxial tension, the effect of the fibre volume, fibre distribution, fibre orientation, fibre length, fibrous bond strength and specimen size on both the stress-strain curve and fracture process was carefully analyzed.

Steels represent the most widely-used metallic alloy, possessing a wide range of microstructures and mechanical properties. By examining the mechanical properties of steels in conjunction with microstructure this book provides a valuable description of the development and behaviour of these materials - the very foundation of their widespread use. Updated throughout and including new chapters on nanostructured steels, and new alloys and technologies for the energy and automobile industries, the book is clearly written and illustrated, with extensive bibliographies and real-life examples. An essential reference, both compact and readily comprehensive, for metallurgists and engineers in both industry and academia.
Covers the microstructure, mechanical behaviour and properties of steels, the most widely-used metallic alloy
· Thoroughly updated with new materials and technologies, plus a new accompanying set of exercises and solutions for teaching use
· Respected author team who bring their wide experience to students and professionals
