Linking of materials properties with microstructures is a fundamental theme in materials science, for which a detailed knowledge of the modern characterization techniques is essential. Since modern materials such as high-temperature alloys, engineering thermoplastics and multilayer semiconductor films have many elemental constituents distributed in more than one phase, characterization is essential to the systematic development of such new materials and understanding how they behave in practical applications. X-ray techniques play a major role in providing information on the elemental composition and crystal and grain structures of all types of materials.
The challenge to the materials characterization expert is to understand how specific instruments and analytical techniques can provide detailed information about what makes each material unique. The challenge to the materials scientist, chemist, or engineer is to know what information is needed to fully characterize each material and how to use this information to explain its behavior, develop new and improved properties, reduce costs, or ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. This comprehensive handbook presents all the necessary background to understand the applications of X-ray analysis to materials characterization with particular attention to the modern approach to these methods.

  Protect your eyes from computer.
Posted by: vati - 10-14-2010, 09:16 PM - Forum: Free Discussion - Replies (7)

Hello.
Im am one of those ingeneers that spend a lot of time working on my computer.
I am making some research on how to prevent the eye damages from computer.
Many of us engineers,achitects,drafters,designers that use softwares like AutoCad,
Sap2000,Etabs or any other BIM software,use diferent background color.
I have asked many people and anyone have his arguments abaut this problem.
And I have mine too.
I use a black background because the white color that we see in the scren is composed
from three diferent colors produced by three diferent pixels
1-red
2-blue
3-green
When we see a black color in that part of the scren all the pixels are off.
More pixels are off less is the risk of damage of the eyes.

But there are others that think that the contrast betwen the black background and the
object that you are working on causes more damages to the eyes.
Let's hope that someone here is an expert on the filld.

The Technical Standards and Commentaries for Port and Harbour Facilities in Japan (OCDI-2009)

[Image: info.png]
If anyone has the book, Please upload it. thanks

[Image: 59662999652348331256.jpg]

Published by The Overseas Coastal Area Development Institute of Japan

Japan is famous for its long coastline (34,000km) and its many ports and harbors (1,100 commercial ones and 3,000 fishing ports). To promote the healthy development of ports and harbors in Japan, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport established the technical standards for port and harbor facilities in 1978 and has updated them every 10 years. The technical standards and commentaries have been written in Japanese naturally, and therefore the contents were a mystery to overseas engineers and researchers. Now an English version of the newest edition (1999) is available for purchase.

1. General (5 pages)
2. Design Conditions (205 pages)
3. Materials (31 pages)
4. Precast Concrete Units (33 pages)
5. Foundatlons (73 pages)
6. Navigation Channels and Basins (13 pages)
7. Protective Facilities for Harbors (45 pages)
8. Mooning Facilities (159 pages)
9. Other Port Facilities (23 pages)
10. Special Purpose Wharves (9 pages)
11. Marinas (11 pages)

The technical standards and commentaries are contained in a hardcover book in A4 size.

Many unique features of Japanese technology are fully exposed. Examples include the design method against random wave actions, seismic design of port and harbor facilities, foundation improvement for soft subsoil, details of concrete caisson design, design of upright breakwaters, earthquake-resistant performance analysis of pile-supported open wharves and other facilities, and so on.

The book is a must for port and harbor engineers who are endeavoring to upgrade their technical know-how, especially by way of exploring foreign technology. Researchers in many fields will also benefit from the book by finding many examples of amalgamation of research accomplishments and engineering practice.

Interested parties are asked to fill out the order form on the bellow and send it to OCDI

  New standards fot testing SCC
Posted by: ir_71 - 10-14-2010, 05:24 PM - Forum: Archive - Replies (2)

Dear friend and colleagues,
Four new European standards for testing self compacting concrete mixtures were introduced two months ago:
EN 12350-9:2010 - "Testing fresh concrete. Self-compacting concrete. V-funnel test";
EN 12350-10:2010 - "Testing fresh concrete. Self-compacting concrete. L box test";
EN 12350-11:2010 - "Testing fresh concrete. Self-compacting concrete. Sieve segregation test";
EN 12350-12:2010 - "Testing fresh concrete. Self-compacting concrete. J-ring test".
Earlier this year the technical specification EN 206-9:2010 "Concrete. Additional rules for self-compacting concrete (SCC)" was issued.
If some of you has any of this standards, please share it.
Thanks in advance!
