MECHANICALLY STABILIZED EARTH SYSTEM INSPECTION MANUAL
Publisher: NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
Pages: 95
Date: April 2007
PREFACE
The purpose of this manual is to provide New Yorh State Department of Transportation Construction Inspectors with a quick and easy-to-use set of inspection guidelines for the installation of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Systems (MSES) that utilize inextensible metallic reinforcements i. e., reinforcing strips, bar mats or wire mesh. The enclosed check lists are intended to serve as reminders to inspectors of unportant aspects for the successfid construction of MSES.
Prior to using this manual, inspectors should become familiar with the general concepts of MSES. Thus information can be found in Chapters 1, 2 & 3 of the Federal Highway Administration Publication No. FHVVA-N-HI-00-043, titled "Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls and Reinforced Soil Slopes Design and Construction Guidelines", wl-tich is included as Appendix 1 of tills manual. In addition, it is imperative that Engineers-In-Charge obtain from the Contractor and review copies of the MSES designers/suppliers Construction Manual. The MSES Designerf`Supplier's Construction Manual contains detailed fi ornlation for the construction of a particular MSES and provides the necessary guidance during the construction inspection process .

Practical Hydroinformatics: Computational Intelligence and Technological Developments in Water Applications
Robert J. Abrahart, Linda M. See, Dimitri P. Solomatine
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540798803 | 2008-12-08
PDF 506 pages 10.49 MB
Hydroinformatics is an emerging subject that is expected to gather speed, momentum and critical mass throughout the forthcoming decades of the 21st century. This book provides a broad account of numerous advances in that field - a rapidly developing discipline covering the application of information and communication technologies, modelling and computational intelligence in aquatic environments. A systematic survey, classified according to the methods used (neural networks, fuzzy logic and evolutionary optimization, in particular) is offered, together with illustrated practical applications for solving various water-related issues. ...

The Basics of Testing Plastics: Mechanical Properties, Flame Exposure, and General Guidelines
The Basics of Testing Plastics: Mechanical Properties, Flame Exposure, and General Guidelines
ISBN: 0803120796
ISBN13: 9780803120792
This manual is the first in a planned series of volumes addressing the challenges and problems associated with testing plastics. Future manuals will focus on electrical characteristics, optical and chemical properties, rheological behavior, as well as global concerns for international testing harmonization, recycling, and other important analytical techniques.
Provides basic information for persons who are not well-experienced in the testing of plastics: chemists, materials engineers, technicians, salesmen, purchasing personnel, newly-appointed laboratory supervisors, quality control personnel, shop foremen, order correspondents, and many others who may work with test data.
Chapter 1- Classification and Definitions, by Stephen Burke Driscoll -- Explains briefly some of the more important characteristics of plastics and how these relate to end-use performance. The various classification schemes illustrate the unique versatility of the polymer industry and how simple changes in the composition or structure of the polymer can significantly influence its processability and how it is used. This chapter also includes an abbreviated glossary of terms, definitions, and explanations of those important chemical additives used to modify the performance of many polymers.
Chapter 2- General Guidelines for Conducting Tests and Evaluating Data, by Alvin J. Flint, Jr.-- Avoid losing money through "false facts" from test data. Includes standard deviation, coefficient of variation, range, Least Significant Differences, and outliers. Discusses the most important aspects of ASTM test methods and specifications.
Chapter 3- Measuring Mechanical Properties of Plastics, by Alvin J. Flint, Jr. -- Three kinds of modulus, viscoelastic behavior. Important aspects of tensile, compressive, flexural, shear, impact, creep, fatigue, HDT, and weathering tests. Test equipment and how data is obtained (including computerization and automation).
Chapter 4- Responses to Flame Exposure, by Alvin J. Flint, Jr. -- Tests for ignition, flame spread, fuel contribution, smoke generation, and toxicity. Small-scale, medium-scale, and large-scale tests and their usefulness, including case studies.
