Maintaining the Safety of our Dams and Reservoirs: Proceedings of the 18th Biennial Conference of the British Dam Society at Queen’s University, Belfast, from 3–6 September 2014
This book contains the proceedings of the 18th Biennial Conference of the British Dam Society, Maintaining the Safety of our Dams and Reservoirs.
Maintaining the Safety of our Dams and Reservoirs covers a wide range of topics that are of direct relevance to all who work with dams and reservoirs, whether in the UK or abroad, be they owners, maintainers, designers or constructors.
The changes to the UK's legislative frameworks for dam safety are covered, as are examples of the many environmental factors to be taken into account, not just for the construction of new dams but also for alterations and repairs.
Several papers provide examples of the planning or construction of new dams, while many deal with upgrades and repairs to existing dams, some as the results of unforeseen incidents. Geotechnical understanding plays a major role in maintaining the safety of the UK's large stock of embankment dams, and several papers feature the results of ground investigations and the subsequent works designed on the knowledge so gained.
The papers are grouped into chapters covering:
Legislation and Environmental Challenges
Geotechnical Issues of Dam Construction and Maintenance
Mechanical Components of Dams
Risk Analysis and Reduction Measures
Design and Construction Case Studies
Monitoring and Incidents at Dams
Repairs to Dams.

Use BIM to develop strategies, expedite projects, improve outcomes, and save money.
BIM is far more than an ""upgrade"" to the latest CAD software. It is a process improvement tool that leverages data to analyze and predict outcomes throughout the different phases of the building life cycle. The time for a building owner to get involved with the BIM process is not at the end of the building project but from the very beginning. BIM for Building Owners and Developers is the only guide that will help you, the owner and client, use BIM to increase transparency and create a more integrated design and construction process, which will result in better quality buildings at lower cost and in a shorter time frame. It will also help you understand what BIM can do for you and what you can expect in terms of process and commitments. You'll discover how BIM can help improve your strategic planning, maximize ROI, support the decision-making processes, and fine-tune GAP analysis.
In addition, BIM for Building Owners and Developers can help you:
Understand, manage, and take advantage of the BIM paradigm shift
Assemble a building as it would be constructed on site to help eliminate many inefficiencies of the construction process
Achieve a high level of coordination through better integration of information and process optimization
Reduce the overall cost of a project by identifying problems while they still can be corrected inexpensively
Make every project easier, faster, and more profitable with BIM for Building Owners and Developers.

Modern fastening techniques are increasingly being used to transfer loads into concrete and masonry structures. In spite of this fact knowledge of the behaviour of such systems is very limited and there is no generally accepted design method. This book has been written by a group of eminent authors from western Europe, Canada, the USA and Japan and with the specific aim of: Compiling and comparing published research on the behaviour of fastening systems; proposing a consistent approach to the design of fastenings based on current empirical and theoretical models; and developing design methods that account for the effects of fastenings to concrete and masonry structures for all types of load including monotonic, sustained, fatigue, seismic and impact loads as well as the influences of environmental effects. In this report, the behaviour of fastenings in concrete and masonry for the entire range of loading types, as well as the influence of the environmental effects, is reviewed, based on experimental results from various parts of the world. The existing design approaches are compared with the available experimental data, and a consistent design method is recommended. The publication is applicable to both new constructions and the repair and strengthening of existing structures.

While most books examine only the classical aspects of hydrology, this three-volume set covers multiple aspects of hydrology, and includes contributions from experts from more than 30 countries. It examines new approaches, addresses growing concerns about hydrological and ecological connectivity, new quantitative and qualitative managing techniques and considers the worldwide impact of climate change.
It also provides updated material on hydrological science and engineering, discussing recent developments as well as classic approaches. Published in three books, Fundamentals and Applications; Modeling, Climate Change, and Variability; and Environmental Hydrology and Water Management, the entire set consists of 87 chapters, and contains 29 chapters in each book.
The chapters in this book contain information on:
• The anthropocenic aquifer, groundwater vulnerability, and hydraulic fracturing, and environmental problems
• Disinfection of water, environmental engineering for water and sanitation systems, environmental nanotechnology, modeling of wetland systems, nonpoint source and water quality modeling, water pollution control using low-cost natural wastes, and water supply and public health and safety
• Environmental flows, river managed system for flood defense, stormwater modeling and management, tourism and river hydrology, and transboundary river basin management
• The historical development of wastewater management, sediment pollution, and sustainable wastewater treatment
• Water governance, scarcity, and security
• The formation of ecological risk on plain reservoirs, modification in hydrological cycle, sustainable development in integrated water resources management, transboundary water resource management, and more
Students, practitioners, policy makers, consultants and researchers can benefit from the use of this text.

Computational Hydraulics introduces the concept of modeling and the contribution of numerical methods and numerical analysis to modeling. It provides a concise and comprehensive description of the basic hydraulic principles, and the problems addressed by these principles in the aquatic environment. Flow equations, analytical and numerical solutions are included. The necessary steps for building and applying numerical methods in hydraulics comprise the core of the book and this is followed by two different example applications of computational hydraulics: river systems and water quality modelling of lakes and rivers. The theory and exercises included in the book promote learning of concepts within academic environments. Computational Hydraulics is intended for under-graduate and graduate students, researchers, members of governmental and non-governmental agencies and professionals involved in management of the water related problems.

Illustrates theories and associated mathematical expressions with numerical examples using various methods, leading to exact solutions, more accurate results, and more computationally efficient techniques
This book presents the derivations of the equations of motion for all structure foundations using either the continuous model or the discrete model. This mathematical display is a strong feature of the book as it helps to explain in full detail how calculations are reached and interpreted. In addition to the simple 'uniform' and 'straight' beams, the book introduces solution techniques for the complicated ‘non uniform’ beams (including linear or non-linear tapered beams), and curved beams. Most of the beams are analyzed by taking account of the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia of the beams themselves as well as the eccentricities and mass moments of inertia of the attachments.
Demonstrates approaches which dramatically cut CPU times to a fraction of conventional FEM
Presents "mode shapes" in addition to natural frequencies, which are critical for designers
Gives detailed derivations for continuous and discrete model equations of motions
Summarizes the analytical and numerical methods for the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and time histories of
straight structures
rods
shafts
Euler beams
strings
Timoshenko beams
membranes/thin plates
Conical rods and shafts
Tapered beams
Curved beams
Has applications for students taking courses including vibration mechanics, dynamics of structures, and finite element analyses of structures, the transfer matrix method, and Jacobi method
This book is ideal for graduate students in mechanical, civil, marine, aeronautical engineering courses as well as advanced undergraduates with a background in General Physics, Calculus, and Mechanics of Material. The book is also a handy reference for researchers and professional engineers.
