This book is a thorough and comprehensive update of the 2002 edition, that incorporates detailed references to the Canadian, American, and British (European) standards, contextualized by the author based on over 30 years of construction experience. In addition to updates to the core text, many new topics are presented in the second edition, including a chapter discussing the methods for achieving quality control and ensuring quality assurance in concrete construction. The book consists of two parts. The first part provides basic information about normal concrete, its grades used on sites and various kinds of modified concretes such as fiber- reinforced concrete, sulphur concrete, roller compacted concrete, high performance concrete, ultra- high performance concrete, and flowing concrete. . It further addresses physical properties of concrete and various types of Portland cement, blended cements, admixtures, additives including properties of aggregates and their influence. The second part of the book highlights the principal causes of concrete deterioration along with protective measures, resulting from incorrect selection of constituent materials, poor construction methods, external factors, chemical attack, corrosion problems, hot and cold weather effects, and the various errors in designing and detailing. Featuring an extensive bibliography of the highly adopted standards as well as manuals and journals critical to the construction industry at the end of each chapter, the volume offers readers an advanced understanding of the theory and practical application of concrete technology and international standards in North America and Britain.
Addresses concrete technology as well as concrete construction practices, meeting national and international standards;
Maximizes readers' understanding of the principal causes of concrete deterioration along with protective measures;
Facilitates readers' grasp of different nomenclature used for the same materials in different parts of the world;
Features suitable tables, charts, and diagrams that illustrate and organize useful information;
Explains sustainable concrete doctrine and how to achieve it meeting green concrete / building requirements;
Provides a glossary, conversion factors, and examples of concrete mix design.

Design guide for concrete-filled double skin steel tubular structures

Author(s)/Editor(s): Lin-Hai Han, Dennis Lam, David A. Nethercot | Size: 8.39 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: CRC Press | Year: 2019 | pages: 127 | ISBN: ISBN-13: 978-1138340237 ISBN-10: 1138340235

[Image: 89477394279583932730.jpg]

[Image: info.png]

This is the first design guide on concrete filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) structures. It addresses in particular CFDST structures with plain concrete sandwiched between circular hollow sections, and provides the relevant calculation methods and construction provisions for CFDST structures.

These inherit the advantages of conventional concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structures, including high strength, good ductility and durability, high fire resistance and favourable constructability. Moreover, because of their unique sectional configuration, CFDST structures have been proved to possess lighter weight, higher bending stiffness and better cyclic performance than conventional CFST. Consequently CFDST can offer reduced concrete consumption and construction costs.

This design guide is for engineers designing electrical grid infrastructures, wind power towers, bridge piers and other structures requiring light self-weight, high bending stiffness and high bearing capacity.

[Image: info.png]

This text provides a concise and practical guide to timber design, using both the Allowable Stress Design and the Load and Resistance Factor Design methods. It suits students in civil, structural, and construction engineering programs as well as engineering technology and architecture programs, and also serves as a valuable resource for the practicing engineer. The examples based on real-world design problems reflect a holistic view of the design process that better equip the reader for timber design in practice.

This new edition

- now includes the LRFD method with some design examples using LRFD for joists, girders and axially load members.
- is based on the 2015 NDS and 2015 IBC model code.
- includes a more in-depth discussion of framing and framing systems commonly used in practice, such as, metal plate connected trusses, rafter and collar tie framing, and pre-engineered framing.
- includes sample drawings, drawing notes and specifications that might typically be used in practice.
- includes updated floor joist span charts that are more practical and are easy to use.
- includes a chapter on practical considerations covering topics like flitch beams, wood poles used for footings, reinforcement of existing structures, and historical data on wood properties.
- includes a section on long span and high rise wood structures
- includes an enhanced student design project

[Image: info.png]

Civil engineers must assure that buildings have long and durable lives, and therefore structural assessment and repair are routinely required and must be performed with the utmost accuracy and professionalism. Assessment, Evaluation, and Repair of Concrete, Steel, and Offshore Structures presents the typical causes of structural failure and their mechanisms, discusses the most up-to-date methods for evaluation and structural assessment, and explains the best project management strategies from the feasibility stage through operations and maintenance. Numerous types of structures are examined and are further illustrated by relevant case studies.

Features:

Examines the probability of several types of structural failure and includes reliability analysis.
Presents best practices for predicting the structural lifetime for both onshore and offshore structures and reviews the most advanced methods for repair.
Includes numerous practical case studies of structural failure and offers mitigation strategies depending of type of structure.

Seismic Assessment and Retrofit of Reinforced Concrete Columns

Author(s)/Editor(s): Konstantinos G. Megalooikonomou | Size: 9 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing | Year: 2019 | pages: 390 | ISBN: 1527527859

[Image: 27199721721752920024.jpg]

[Image: info.png]

Reinforced concrete columns play a very important role in structural performance. As such, it is essential to apply a suitable analytical tool to estimate their structural behaviour considering all failure mechanisms such as axial, shear, and flexural failures. This book highlights the development of a fiber beam-column element accounting for shear effects and the effect of tension stiffening through reinforcement-to-concrete bond, along with the employment of suitable constitutive material laws.
