Seismic response of a steel liquid storage tanks

In this paper, the effectiveness of the base isolation on steel storage tanks has been investigated through
numerical models and then checked by shaking table tests on a reduced scale (1:14) model of a real
steel tank, typically used in petrochemical plants. In the experimental campaign the floating roof has also
been taken into account. The tests have been performed on the physical model both in fixed and isolated
base configurations; in particular two alternative base isolation systems have been used: high-damping
rubber bearings devices and sliding isolators with elasto-plastic dampers. Finally, a comparison between
experimental and numerical results has also been performed.

Effective Project Management - Traditional, Adaptive, Extreme - 3rd Ed.
Posted by: Dell_Brett - 03-27-2011, 01:47 PM - Forum: Project Management - Replies (1)

Effective Project Management - Traditional, Adaptive, Extreme - 3rd Ed.

Author: Robert K. Wysocki and Rudd McGary | Size: 7,6 MB | Format: CHM | Publisher: John Wiley & Sons | Year: 2003 | pages: 504 | ISBN: 0471432210

In previous editions, this book has established itself as the definitive guide to effective project management. Now, with this major revision, it’s updated to reflect significant changes in project management practices over the last few years. Written again by Robert K. Wysocki and a new coauthor, Rudd McGary, this book covers traditional methods of project management as well as adaptive and extreme approaches. Unlike other project management books that simply give abstract advice, this timely book mentors you though a series of real-world exercises and adheres to the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Body of Knowledge, 2000 Edition.

Effective Project Management is packed with thought-provoking discussion questions related to the chapter materials and case study as well as an abundance of exercises. The material covers:

- Traditional project management, including risk assessment and control
- Generating, building, and representing the Work Breakdown Structure
- Estimating duration, resource requirements, and cost
- Constructing and analyzing the project network diagram
- Organizing and conducting the Joint Project Planning session
- Recruiting and managing a project team
- Adaptive Project Framework, Extreme Project Management, and their core values
- Project portfolio management, including prioritizing projects.

The book consists of three parts organized into 21 chapters, an epilogue, and two appendices. We have followed the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) standards advocated by the Project Management Institute (PMI). As far as we are able to tell, what we have done is entirely compatible with PMBOK in the sense that we have described approaches that do not contradict PMBOK. Once you have completed this book, you will have covered all nine knowledge areas of the PMBOK. PMI has recommended our book as one that every project manager should have in his or her library.

Design of beam-to-column joints under seismic-induced fire
Posted by: Apache - 03-27-2011, 01:45 PM - Forum: Journals, Papers and Presentations - No Replies

Design of beam-to-column joints under seismic-induced fire

In this paper, a multi-objective advanced design methodology is proposed for steel-concrete
composite moment-resisting frames. The research activity mainly focused on the design of
beam-to-column joints under seismic-induced fire loading together with the definition of
adequate structural details for composite columns. Thermal analyses of cross sections were
performed in order to obtain internal temperature distribution; structural analyses were then
carried out on the whole frame to assess the global behavior under the combined action of
static and fire loadings. Furthermore, results of numerical analyses were used in order to derive
information about the mechanical and numerical behavior of joints. In this paper the
experimental program carried out on four beam-to-column joint specimens under seismic
loading is described and results are presented and discussed together with the outcomes of
numerical simulations owing to seismic and fire actions. Experimental tests demonstrated the
adequacy of the seismic design. Numerical simulations showed a satisfactory performance of
joints under seismic-induced fire loading.

Product Description:
There are various definitions of what constitutes infrastructure, but generally infrastructure refers to the large-scale public systems, services, and facilities of a country or region that are necessary for economic activity. The sector tends to be separated into two broad subsets - economic and social. Economic infrastructure includes highways, water and sewerage facilities, and energy distribution and telecommunication networks whereas social infrastructure encompasses schools, universities, hospitals, public housing and prisons. Infrastructure assets are generally characterised by high development costs (high barriers to entry) and long lives. They are generally managed and financed on a long-term basis. Historically it was seen as the role of the government to fund and manage these assets for the good of the population. Today, the role of the government as the provider of public services is increasingly being questioned both in terms of the absolute cost to taxpayers and as to whether a government can deliver the assets as efficiently as a private company competing for the privilege. From the government's perspective there is a strong case for privatisation, where the debt raised by the private partner remains on their balance sheets, not on that of the Treasury's. These factors have resulted in a gradual migration from the public provision of infrastructure to the private sector. The private provision of these assets may take many forms from joint ventures, concessions and franchises through to straight delivery contracts. Essentially the private sector is being brought in to design, build, finance and/or maintain public sector assets in return for long term contracted payments from the government or access to the revenues generated from the asset.

ISBN-13: 9783642124952

Product Description:
Dykes occur in a wide variety of geological and tectonic settings and their detailed study through space and time is imperative for understanding several geological events. Dykes are believed to be an integral part of continental rifting and when they occur as spatially extensive swarms of adequate size, they can be of immense utility in continental reconstructions and also help to identify Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs). It is known that continental flood basalts and major dyke swarms have their origin related in some way to the up-rise of hot mantle plumes which may lead to rifting and eventual continental break-up. Dykes signify crustal extension and are important indicators of crustal stabilisation events, supercontinental assembly and dispersal, crust-mantle interaction and play a significant role in the delineation of crustal provinces as well as in deciphering crustal evolution events. Many economic mineral deposits of the world are also associated with a variety of dykes. The volume will provide state-of-the-art information on all aspects of dykes with emphasis on the origin, evolution and emplacement of dykes.
