Dynamics With Friction: Modelling, Analysis and Experiment

Author: Ardeshir Guran, Friedrich Pfeiffer, Karl Popp | Size: 12.7 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: World Scientific Pub Co Inc | Year: 2001 | pages: 329 | ISBN: 9789810229542

The dynamics of dissipative mechanical and structural systems is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories worldwide with ever-increasing sophistication of modelling, analysis and experiments. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centres that represent the state-of-the-art in the study of friction oscillators. It provides the reader with the fruits of a team effort by leaders in this fascinating field. The present part 2 of this volume on dynamics with friction is a continuation of the previous part 1, and is designed to help synthesize our current knowledge regarding the role of friction in mechanical and structural systems as well as everyday life. The topics covered include interaction of vibration and friction at dry sliding contacts, friction-induced instability in disks, dynamics of lubricated flexible links in kinematic chains, modal interactions in periodic structures, dynamics of an experimentally excited beam, transient waves in viscoelastic materials, dynamic stability of plates with damping, friction modelling and dynamic computation, damping through use of passive and semi-active dry friction forces. This book gives a comprehensive picture of dynamics of dissipative mechanical and structural systems. It also gives an up-to-date account of the present state of the field. It should be of interest to engineers, rheologists, material scientists, applied mathematicians, physicists and historians of science and technology.

Investigation on Buckling Behavior of Cylindrical Liquid Storage

Investigation on Buckling Behavior of Cylindrical Liquid Storage Tanks Under Seismic Excitation: 1st Report — Investigation on Elephant Foot Bulge

Author: Tomohiro Ito, Hideyuki Morita, Koji Hamada, Akihisa Sugiyama, Yoji Kawamoto, Hideyasu Ogo and Eiji Shirai | Size: 1 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: ASME | pages: 9

abstract

When a thin walled cylindrical liquid storage tank suffers a large seismic base excitation, buckling phenomena may be caused such as bending buckling at the bottom portion and shear buckling at the middle portion of the tank. However, the dynamic behaviors of the tanks is not fully clarified, especially those from the occurrence of buckling to some failures. In this study, bending buckling phenomena were focused which will be categorized as diamond buckling and elephant foot bulge. As ones of a series of studies, dynamic buckling tests were performed using large scale liquid storage tank models simulating thin walled cylindrical liquid storage tanks in nuclear power plants. The input seismic acceleration was increased until the elephant foot bulge occurred, and the vibrational behavior before and after buckling was investigated. In addition to the large scaled model tests, fundamental tests using small scaled tank models were also performed in order to clarify the effects of dynamic liquid pressure on the buckling threshold and deformation patterns.
