Excavations and foundations in soft soils

Excavations and foundations in soft soils
by Hans-Georg Kempfert, Berhane Gebreselassie
Springer-Verlag, 2006
University of Michigan
ISBN 3540328947, 9783540328940

The book reviews the experiences with, as well as recent developments and research results on excavations and foundations in and on soft soil deposits. Geotechnical design and execution of civil engineering structures on very soft soils are usually associated with substantial difficulties. The aim of the authors is to give the readers an overview of the state of the art of material properties of soft soils and their application in excavations, different types of foundations and stabilization methods. The authors emphasize, however, that an underground with soft soil layer should not a priori be classified as extremely difficult and highly cost intensive. By making use of advance knowledge in soft soil engineering so far as available in the field of geotechnical engineering, it is possible to attain a technically safe and economically justifiable solution for a particular construction project. The book is expected to contribute much in this regard. The book is intended to serve practising as well as research engineers in the field of geotechnical engineering, moreover civil and structural engineers and advanced students may also find it a useful reference work

Ground Anchors And Anchored Structures

info:
Ground anchors and anchored structures
BY PETROS P. XANTHAKOS
Consulting Engineer
Washington, D.C.
JOHN WILEY & SONS, INC.
ISBN 0471525200, 9780471525202

Treating anchorages as a direct application of the laws of statics and the theories governing the transfer of load, this book focuses on designs that are safe and reasonably priced. It is divided into two parts. Following a general introduction in the first chapter, Part One goes on to explore anchor systems, components, installation and construction details. Presents special anchor systems such as extractable, compression-type, multibell, and regroutable anchors. Analyzes the transfer of load and its relation to failure modes and anchor load capacity; deals with design considerations; covers mechanisms and types of corrosion; and details anchor stressing, testing programs, and evaluation standards. Part Two considers uses and applications and design aspects of anchored structures; presents design examples of practical value and reasonable simplicity; and incorporates examples and case histories.

# ISBN-13: 978-0387494739

Product Description:
This book is a modern version of classical Strength of Materials adapted to meet the needs of developing technology with its emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. Subjects such as plasticity, fracture, composite materials, energy approaches and mechanics of microdevices (MEMs) are integrated into a unified text. In this way, the slow build up of traditional programs is replaced by an integrated and unified approach which reflects the reality of modern technology with its demands to learn the fundamentals of new subjects quickly.
The text is suitable for an introductory Strength of Materials course and as a continuing text for both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. It can also be used as a resource for professional engineers occupied with development of new products.
