Debris Flow: Mechanics, Prediction and Countermeasures
(Balkema: Proceedings and Monographs in Engineering, Water and Earth Sciences)
By Tamotsu Takahashi
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 0415435528
edition 2007
PDF 13,1 mb
448 pages

A comprehensive account, treating both theoretical and applied aspects of debris flow, this text begins with a discussion of fundamental mechanical aspects, such as flow characteristics, type classification, mechanics, occurrence and development, fully-developed flow and deposition processes. It sheds light on the application of theory in relation to computer-simulated reproductions of real disasters. Attention is paid to debris flow controlling structures, design effectiveness and performance, soft countermeasure problems, such as identification of debris flow prone ravines and the prediction of occurrence by the concept of precipitation threshold.

Environmental Hydraulics is a new text for students and professionals studying advanced topics in river and estuarine systems. The book contains the full range of subjects on open channel flows, including mixing and dispersion, Saint-Venant equations method of characteristics and interactions between flowing water and its surrondings (air entrainment, sediment transport).

Following the approach of Hubert Chanson's highly successful undergraduate textbook Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow, the reader is guided step-by-step from the basic principles to more advanced practical applications.

Each section of the book contains many revision exercises, problems and assignments to help the reader test their learning in practical situations.

·Complete text on river and estuarine systems in a single volume
·Step-by-step guide to practical applications
·Many worked examples and exercises

Product Description

This monograph presents the mechanics of vibration, buckling and bending of elastic structures with inclined members such as x-braced high rise frames and conical shells. More than giving detailed derivations of basic equations, Mechanics of Elastic Structures with Inclined Members is mainly oriented towards practical problem-solving. The book can be used as a textbook for graduate students concentrating on structural mechanics, or as a reference book for engineers and researchers in the fields of engineering mechanics, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and aerospace engineering.

Product Description:
Volume 1 covers the basics necessary for any construction activity in foundation engineering. This systematic introduction to the assessment of soil and rock properties provides an insight into the requirements of Eurocode 7, Parts 1 and 3. It also gives details of geotechnical laboratory and field tests and the associated equipment, concise treatments of relevant solutions provided by the theories of elasticity and plasticity and numerical methods applied to solve problems of geotechnical design. The problems of earthquakes are also explained with regard to Eurocode 8.
Volume 2 of the Handbook covers the geotechnical procedures used in manufacturing anchors and piles as well as for improving or underpinning foundations, securing existing constructions, controlling ground water, excavating rocks and earth works. It also treats such specialist areas as the use of geotextiles and seeding.
Volume 3 of this Handbook deals with foundations. It presents spread foundations starting with basic designs right up the necessary proofs. The section on pile foundations covers possible types of piles and their design, together with their load-bearing capacity, suitability, sample loads and testing. A further chapter explains the use, manufacture and calculation of caissons, illustrated by real-life examples. There is comprehensive coverage of the possibilities for stabilising excavations, together with the relevant area of application, while another section is devoted to the useful application of trench walls. Shore protection is treated in a special contribution covering sheet pile walls, while all types of slope protection and retainments are described in detail with excellent illustrations. Two further contributions are devoted to the special topics of machine foundations and foundations in subsidence regions. The entire book is an indispensable aid in the planning and execution of all types of foundations found in practice, whether for academics or practitioners.
