The construction manuals from Edition Detail have set new standards in the field of specialist literature. The latest volume in this series examines brickwork and the wide range of possibilities it offers. A completely new and revised edition, it documents in detail the technical principles involved in using brickwork for building, it examines the various materials used, their properties, the sizes and forms of bricks, the bonds, and the behaviour of brickwork under stress. The methods of building with brick are also dealt with in detail. In addition, full information is provided on the requirements with respect to heat, damp, sound-proofing and fire protection, and the most recent standards and norms are listed. Finally, a large number of built examples are presented, complete with plans and details, all of which illustrate the many applications of brickwork in contemporary construction. All plans have been specially produced by the editorial department Detail for this book and for ease of comparison, they have been drawn to the same scale.

Avoiding or controlling fatigue damage is a major issue in the design and inspection of welded structures subjected to dynamic loading. Life predictions are usually used for safe life analysis, i.e. for verifying that it is very unlikely that fatigue damage will occur during the target service life of a structure. Damage tolerance analysis is used for predicting the behavior of a fatigue crack and for planning of in-service scheduled inspections.
It should be a high probability that any cracks appearing are detected and repaired before they become critical. In both safe life analysis and the damage tolerance analysis there may be large uncertainties involved that have to be treated in a logical and consistent manner by stochastic modeling.
This book focuses on fatigue life predictions and damage tolerance analysis of welded joints and is divided into three parts. The first part outlines the common practice used for safe life and damage tolerance analysis with reference to rules and regulations. The second part emphasises stochastic modeling and decision-making under uncertainty, while the final part is devoted to recent advances within fatigue research on welded joints. Industrial examples that are included are mainly dealing with offshore steel structures. Spreadsheets which accompany the book give the reader the possibility for hands-on experience of fatigue life predictions, crack growth analysis and inspection planning. As such, these different areas will be of use to engineers and researchers.

Fundamentals of Corrosion: Mechanisms, Causes, and Preventative Methods

Billions of dollars are spent annually for the replacement of corroded structures, machinery, and components. Premature failure of bridges or structures due to corrosion can also result in human injury, loss of life, and collateral damage.
Written by an authority in corrosion science, Fundamentals of Corrosion: Mechanisms, Causes, and Preventative Measures comprehensively describes the causes of corrosion—and the means to limit or prevent it. Engineers, designers, architects, and all those involved with the selection of construction materials will relish a reference that provides such a thorough yet basic illustration of the causes, prevention, and control of corrosion.
This reference explores:
Mechanisms and forms of corrosion
Methods of attack on plastic materials
Causes of failure in protective coatings, linings, and paints
Development of new alloys with corrosion-resistant properties
Exposure to the atmosphere is one of the largest problems and biggest causes of corrosion that engineers and designers face in construction. It has been further estimated that the cost of protection against atmospheric corrosion accounts for approximately half the total cost of all corrosion protection methods. This book places special emphasis on atmospheric exposure and presents vital information regarding the design of structures, automobiles, household plumbing, manufacturing equipment, and other entities, as well as the effects of de-icing chemicals on highways and bridges.

Frank B. Watts, “Engineering Documentation Control Handbook”
William Andrew Publishing | 2008 | ISBN: 0815515952 | 376 pages | PDF | 2.5 MB
Control of engineering documentation, sometimes called Configuration Management (CM) especially in the defense industries, is critical to world-class manufacturing survival. This new Second Edition of a highly successful engineering documentation handbook is one of the best blueprints for constructive, efficient EDC/CM ever published.
Use the Engineering Documentation Control Handbook to get on track right away and make the release of new products and their documentation flow smoothly and easily. The book is packed with specific methods that can be applied quickly and accurately to almost any industry and any product to control documentation, request changes to the product, make those changes and develop bills of material. The result is a powerful communications bridge between engineering and "the rest of the world" that makes rapid changes in products and documentation possible. With the help of the simple techniques in the handbook, companies can gain and hold their competitive advantages in a world that demands flexibility and quick reflexes -- and has no sympathy for delays.
The new edition contains substantial additions worked into the book and several new chapters. However, the thrust of the book retains the same focus on basics, rules and reasons. The author emphasizes that EDC or CM must be recognized as a key business strategy, and the days of "throwing it over the wall" are gone forever.

Written and edited by a team of specialists at Max Fordham LLP, one of the UKs leading environmental and building services engineering consultancies, Environmental Design is the result of their extensive experience in designing environmentally-friendly buildings. The principles of their approach, which they have taught in numerous schools of architecture and engineering, are clearly presented here. This book is essential reading for architects, engineers, planners and students of these disciplines. The book starts with some basic scientific principles and environmental issues and then moves on to site planning, energy use, materials and buildings form. Natural ventilation systems, high-efficiency mechanical equipment and alternative energy sources are covered. State-of-the-art buildings of exceptional quality are incorporated throughout the text and illustrate the authors belief that environmentally responsible architecture can be visually exciting. The book concludes with a selection of detailed casestudies of award-winning projects including Beaufort Court, Kings Langley.
