A NONLINEAR ANALYSIS METHOD FOR PERFORMANCE BASED SEISMIC DESIGN

Abstract

A relatively simple nonlinear method for the seismic analysis of structures (the N2 method) is presented. It combines the pushover analysis of a multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) model with the response spectrum analysis of an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. The method is formulated in the acceleration-displacement format, which enables the visual interpretation of the procedure and of the relations between the basic quantities controlling the seismic response. Inelastic spectra, rather than elastic spectra with equivalent damping and period, are applied. This feature represents the major difference with respect to the capacity spectrum method. Moreover, demand quantities can be obtained without iteration. Generally, the results of the N2 method are reasonably accurate, provided that the structure oscillates predominantly in the first mode. Some additional limitations apply. In the paper, the method is described and discussed, and it basic derivations are given. The similarities and differences between the proposed method and the FEMA 273 and ATC 40 nonlinear static analysis procedures are discussed. Application of the method is illustrated by means of an example.

Pressure Vessels
Design and Practice

Info:
Author: Somnath Chattopadhyay
Edition: 3, illustrated
Publisher: CRC Press, 2005
ISBN: 0849313694, 9780849313691
Length: 185 pages
Pdf: 4.6 Mb

With very few books adequately addressing ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, and other international code issues, Pressure Vessels: Design and Practice provides a comprehensive, in-depth guide on everything engineers need to know.
With emphasis on the requirements of the ASME this consummate work examines the design of pressure vessel components with explanations that clearly emphasize the inherent design principles and philosophy. Chapters thoroughly cover stresses in shells, covers and flanges, vessel supports, and includes reviews of fatigue and fracture mechanics, structural stability, and limit analysis. With equations and procedures for designing the main parts of pressure vessels, this volume is a convenient resource and reference.
Pressure Vessels: Design and Practice covers the basic theories and principles behind the stress limiting conditions in the codes. It is also a practical guide for designing and building pressure vessels of all types. Not just a 'cookbook, ' this volume allows you to trace the origin of the design equations used in the construction codes, offering a valuable, physical insight into the design process.

The chapters in this book show that a careful blend of engineering judgement and advanced principles of engineering mechanics may be used to resolve many complex geotechnical engineering problems. It is hoped that these may inspire the geotechnical engineering practice to make more extensive use of them in future.

info:

Cliff Nicholls "Asphalt Surfacings"
Published by Spon Press | May 1998 | ISBN : 0419231102 | PDF Format, 425 pages | English | 7.7 MB

A guide to asphalt materials used for paving road and airfield surfaces, this book discusses each material type, examining its constituent materials, construction processes and properties, and offering an assessment of the material types appropriate to particular sites and applications.

In recent years, communications have fostered a greater interchange of ideas between countries, as well as the increase in the traffic levels imposing greater stresses on the road pavements, so that there is perceived benefit in developing further material types, and then exporting them. These include stone mastic asphalt and the thinsurface course systems.
