Volcanic and Tectonic Hazard Assessment for Nuclear Facilities

VOLCANIC AND TECTONIC HAZARD ASSESSMENT
FOR NUCLEAR FACILITIES
Geoscientists worldwide are developing and applying methodologies to estimate geologic hazards
associated with the siting of nuclear facilities, including nuclear power plants and underground repos-
itories for long-lived radioactive wastes. Understanding such hazards, particularly in the context of
the long functional lifetimes of many nuclear facilities, is a challenging task. This book documents
the current state of the art in volcanic and tectonic hazard assessment for proposed nuclear facilities,
which must be located in areas where the risks associated with geologic processes can be quantified
and are demonstrably low.
Specific topics include overviews of volcanic and tectonic processes, the history of development
of hazard assessment methodologies, description of current techniques for characterizing hazards,
and development of probabilistic methods for estimating risks and uncertainties. Examples of hazard
assessments are drawn from around the world, including the United States, Great Britain, Sweden,
Switzerland and Japan.
This volume will promote much interest and debate about this important topic among research
scientists and graduate students actively developing methods in geologic hazard assessment, geolo-
gists and engineers charged with assessing the safety of nuclear facilities and those with regulatory
responsibility to evaluate such assessments.

Product Description:

A practical reference, this book focuses on the serious contaminants that cause fungal infestations, commonly referred to as mold. It provides information on how to counter problems as they occur and how to prevent infestations with proactive measures. It includes chapters on biology and metrics that explore how to approach measuring infestaion and understanding it. It also discusses mold and other contaminant particles, remediation, and repair to provide insight on what to do in the event of a problem. The chapter on epidemiology conveys an understanding of the problem and its magnitude and presents aspects of health challenges. It includes a model for mold growth that can be used to prevent such growth.

Design of fastenings for use in concrete CEN/TS 1992-4-1 up to 4
Posted by: Draculina - 10-06-2010, 11:16 AM - Forum: Archive - Replies (5)

Hello! Does anyone have the following:

  • CEN/TS 1992-4-1:2009 Design of fastenings for use in concrete - Part 4-1: General
  • CEN/TS 1992-4-2:2009 Design of fastenings for use in concrete - Part 4-2: Headed Fasteners
  • CEN/TS 1992-4-3:2009 Design of fastenings for use in concrete - Part 4-3: Anchor channels
  • CEN/TS 1992-4-4:2009 Design of fastenings for use in concrete - Part 4-4: Post-installed fasteners - Mechanical systems

I've been applying the CEB/EOTA design guides so far and I'm curious to see if there are any differences in the new standards, as the CEB design guides are very conservative.

Many thanks, any help is appreciated!!

  Opportunities outside the office
Posted by: CMSfromtheUS - 10-06-2010, 02:26 AM - Forum: Free Discussion - Replies (4)

Hello everyone. I am in the early stages of my engineering career and getting a little concerned that I'll be spending the rest of my work life inside the office. I'd be interested to hear the forum's thoughts on this subject.
I know I would be much more interested and motivated if I were more physically connected to the work that I was doing. What are career options for someone who would like to use their civil engineering skills, but would prefer to spend most of their day to day working outside of the office? It seems like a lot of consulting engineers don't get the chance to leave the office as part of their work. Without any regard for location or career level what are some specific job titles or companies with this kind of opportunity? Construction comes to mind, any other suggestions?
