Spectral Element Method in Structural Dynamics is a concise and timely introduction to the spectral element method (SEM) as a means of solving problems in structural dynamics, wave propagations, and other related fields. The book consists of three key sections. In the first part, background knowledge is set up for the readers by reviewing previous work in the area and by providing the fundamentals for the spectral analysis of signals. In the second part, the theory of spectral element method is provided, focusing on how to formulate spectral element models and how to conduct spectral element analysis to obtain the dynamic responses in both frequency- and time-domains. In the last part, the applications of SEM to various structural dynamics problems are introduced, including beams, plates, pipelines, axially moving structures, rotor systems, multi-layered structures, smart structures, composite laminated structures, periodic lattice structures, blood flow, structural boundaries, joints, structural damage, and impact forces identifications, as well as the SEM-FEM hybrid method.

Spectral Element Method in Structural Dynamics can be used by graduate students of aeronautical, civil, naval architectures, mechanical, structural and biomechanical engineering. Researchers in universities, technical institutes, and industries will also find the book to be a helpful reference highlighting SEM applications to various engineering problems in areas of structural dynamics, wave propagations, and other related subjects. The book can also be used by students, professors, and researchers who want to learn more efficient and more accurate computational methods useful for their research topics from all areas of engineering, science and mathematics, including the areas of computational mechanics and numerical methods.

Behaviour of Precast Concrete Floor Slabs Exposed to Standardised Fire

Behaviour of Precast Concrete Floor Slabs Exposed to Standardised Fire
by Gordon M E Cooke

Abstract
This paper quantifies the thermal movements of 14 simply supported precast reinforced concrete floor slabs of 4.5m span and 900mm width exposed to two standardised heating regimes used in fire resistance furnace tests. The tests were designed to show the effect of varying the slab thickness, type of concrete, imposed load, soffit protection and nature of fire exposure on the mid-span flexural deflection and axial movements of the slab ends. Measured deflections showed that during the 90 min design period of fire resistance thermal bowing was dominant and the effect of the 1.5 kN/m2 design imposed load was small. The NPD hydrocarbon fire exposure caused a doubling of the flexural deflections achieved using the standard BS 476: Part 8 (now Part 20) fire exposure in the first 20 min of exposure.

An Assessment of Repair and Strengthening Techniques for Brick and Stone Masonry Arch Bridges
by D Ashurst

Abstract:
The problems and repair techniques studied were as follows: Problem: Arch ring with insufficient calculated capacity -- Repair techniques: reinforced concrete saddle; repointing; grouting; lining with sprayed concrete; prefabricated liner. Problem: Inadequate foundations -- Repair: mini-piles; underpinning with mass concrete; curtain walls may be combined with grouting and/or stitching of the piers or abutments; invert slabs. Problem: Outward movement of the spandrel walls - Repair: tie bars; and replacing some or all of the spandrel fill with concrete. The County Councils of England and Wales and the Regional Councils of Scotland were asked to provide examples of bridges which had been repaired using the techniques. A total of 180 examples were provided from which a sample of the fifty most suitable was identified for more detailed study. This report provides a useful guide to the effectiveness, the advantages and disadvantages, and the cost of the various repair and strengthening techniques available for masonry arch bridges.
