Decision Consequence Analysis (DCA) is a framework for improving the quality of decision results. The framework is a systematic, multi-criteria quantification of uncertainties and the opportunities for managing and reducing the potential negative consequences of such uncertainties. DCA is demonstrated throughout the text for each stage of system based management of environmental issues. DCA links disciplines and incorporates components of risk modelling, probability modelling and the psychology of decision making. Its goal is to provide a comprehensive unbiased decision making framework. Its foundation is accurately defining your problem statement and clearly vetting your objectives to build a structure for meaningful analysis of data. Employment of DCA consistently throughout the environmental industry can reduce decibel-driven, agenda-laden decision making, streamline expenditure of resources (financial, human, natural), and provide a clear path to the sustainable maintenance of balanced environmental systems as the penultimate objective. This book provides a toolbox to both the novice and experienced environmental practitioner of valuable techniques for addressing site specific environmental issues, as well as managing a portfolio of liabilities on an international scale. Ultimately, the authors are addressing the critical issue of balancing environmental asset balance sheets, whether on the scale of an individual project, across a company's portfolio, or for a community. The environmental manager who adopts the principles in this book will have greater confidence that environmental protection or restoration activities are providing measurable utility. The first new edition since 1989 of Geo-Data, formerly edited by George Kurian, is a splendid example of what a reference book can be. Its purpose is to provide the reader with the most detailed and comprehensive description available of the physical geography of the countries of the world. It achieves this purpose in an easy-to-use alphabetical arrangement for all of the world's 207 countries and dependencies. Each entry begins with the key facts about that country including longest rivers and highest mountains and other key statistics. All place-names and geographical features such as mountains and lakes have been listed in the most easily recognized versions of their names. Entries adhere to the same basic structure with key facts followed by overall geography and geology; then mountains and hills; inland waterways, coasts and oceans; climate and vegetation; human population; natural resources; and finally further readings. This information is enhanced by a relief map of the country that is both clear and easy to read. Additional features of the volume include an extensive index plus 19 tables of world rankings and a glossary. The glossary is perhaps the weakest feature, as it could have been more extensive.

Michael’s research has ranged very widely from scientific principles to engineering applications, with a particular focus on the buckling of thin shell structures and the mechanics of granular solids. He has made major contributions and undertaken wide international collaborations over the last 3 decades. The broad area is highly topical with lasting importance for both fundamental scientific understanding and engineering application to challenging problems. The breadth of his contributions is reflected by the wide range of topics covered by this Festschrift. Michael’s seminal book entitled ‘‘Guide for the Economic Design of Circular Metal Silos’’ has been highly regarded and widely appreciated by both researchers and practising engineers worldwide. His enormous contributions in developing the most advanced standards for loading on silos, structural design of silos and design of shell structures will certainly have a lasting impact on engineering practice.

Abstract:
A two-stage mixing process for concrete involves mixing a slurry of cementitious materials and water, then adding the slurry to coarse and fine aggregate to form concrete. Some research has indicated that this process might facilitate dispersion of cementitious materials and improve cement hydration, the characteristics of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between aggregate and paste, and concrete homogeneity. The goal of the study was to find optimal mixing procedures for production of a homogeneous and workable mixture and quality concrete using a two-stage mixing operation. The specific objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To achieve optimal mixing energy and time for a homogeneous cementitious material, (2) To characterize the homogeneity and flow property of the pastes, (3) To investigate effective methods for coating aggregate particles with cement slurry, (4) To study the effect of the two-stage mixing procedure on concrete properties, (5) To obtain the improved production rates. Parameters measured for Phase I included: heat of hydration, maturity, and rheology tests were performed on the fresh paste samples, and compressive strength, degree of hydration, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging tests were conducted on the cured specimens. For Phases II and III tests included slump and air content on fresh concrete and compressive and tensile strengths, rapid air void analysis, and rapid chloride permeability on hardened concrete.

ISO 17635:2010 Non-destructive testing of welds - General rules for metallic materials

This International Standard gives guidelines for the choice of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for welds
and evaluation of the results for quality control purposes, based on quality requirements, material, weld
thickness, welding process, and extent of testing.
This International Standard also specifies general rules and standards to be applied to the different types of
testing, for either the methodology or the acceptance level for metallic materials.
Acceptance levels cannot be a direct interpretation of the quality levels defined in ISO 5817 or ISO 10042.
They are linked to the overall quality of the produced batch of welds.
Requirements for acceptance levels for NDT comply with quality levels stated in ISO 5817 or ISO 10042
(moderate, intermediate, stringent) only on a general basis and not in detail for each indication.
Annex A gives correlations between quality, NDT and acceptance level standards.
Annex B gives an overview of the standards linked to quality levels, acceptance levels, and NDT methods.
