Future forms and design for sustainable cities

Author: Mike Jenks and Nicola Dempsey | Size: 14 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: Architectural Press | Year: 2005 | pages: 459 | ISBN: 075066309X
[Image: 49923703087667838205.jpg]

The aim of this book is to present the reader with examples of the latest research into different urban forms and the ways in which they can be designed to be more sustainable. The pursuit of sustainability has been placed on the agenda of governments and non-governmental organizations after the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, and more recently by the World Commission on Environment and Development (1987) and the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio. It has been stated by these, and other, bodies that cities must be economically viable, socially equitable and contribute to environmental protection of all species: adhering to the concept of the Three Pillars of Sustainable Development (United Nations, 2002). In many countries, policy has been adopted with long-term urban sustainability as its focus, and there are many examples of this translated into practice (Edwards, 1999; Beatley, 2000; European Commission, 2001; Sorensen et al., 2004). This book presents some of the diverse aspects that are inextricably bound up with, and strongly influence, the scope of sustainable urban planning and design. A great deal has been written about the influences that can be said to affect the urban form, such as the technological, social, economic, institutional, geographical and physical (e.g. Norgaard, 1994; Jenks et al., 1996; Jenks and Burgess, 2000; Williams et al., 2000; Wheeler, 2003). These aspects are inter-related and interdependent as they all facilitate and influence sustainable urban planning and design in varying degrees. The chapters that follow add to the debate, examining ideas drawn from research and practice at different scales of the built environment from the urban region to the neighbourhood level in a number of different countries. The different scales at which sustainable ideas are discussed are reflected in the three major sections of the book.

Significant changes from the 2008 to the 2011 edition of ACI 318

This paper summarizes the significant changes made since the
publication of the 2008 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-08) and Commentary (ACI 318R-08) that are reflected in the 2011 edition of the code.

Changes affecting conventionally reinforced concrete as well
as precast, prestressed concrete, including posttensioned
concrete, are enumerated.

The changes to “Appendix D: Anchoring to Concrete,” are particularly important and are of major interest to the precast/prestressed concrete industry. These are described in detail.

Elasticity for Geotechnicians: A Modern Exposition of Kelvin, Boussinesq, Flamant, Cerruti, Melan, and Mindlin Problems

Author: Paolo Podio-Guidugli, A. Favata, | Size: 3.4 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: Springer | Year: 2013 | pages: 210 | ISBN: 3319012576

This book deals in a modern manner with a family of named problems from an old and mature subject, classical elasticity. These problems are formulated over either a half or the whole of a linearly elastic and isotropic two- or three-dimensional space, subject to loads concentrated at points or lines. The discussion of each problem begins with a careful examination of the prevailing symmetries, and proceeds with inverting the canonical order, in that it moves from a search for balanced stress fields to the associated strain and displacement fields.

The book, although slim, is fairly well self-contained; the only prerequisite is a reasonable familiarity with linear algebra (in particular, manipulation of vectors and tensors) and with the usual differential operators of mathematical physics (gradient, divergence, curl, and Laplacian); the few nonstandard notions are introduced with care. Support material for all parts of the book is found in the final Appendix.
