Modeling of Masonry Infill Panels for Structural Analysis

[Image: info.png]

JOURNAL OF STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING (1997)
Volume: 123, Issue: 10, Pages: 1295-1302

Abstract:
An analytical macromodel based on an equivalent strut approach integrated with a smooth hysteretic model is proposed for representing masonry infill panels in nonlinear analysis of frame structures. The hysteresis model uses degrading control parameters for stiffness and strength degradation and slip "pinching" that can be implemented to replicate a wide range of hysteretic force-displacement behavior resulting from different design and geometry. The paper presents the development of the hysteretic model and the definitions of the control parameters, which can be determined using any suitable theoretical model for masonry infills. An available theoretical model for simplified engineering evaluation of masonry infilled frames was explored for estimating the control parameters of the proposed macromodel. The macromodel was incorporated in a nonlinear structural analysis program, IDARC2D Version 4.0, for quasi-static cyclic and dynamic analysis of masonry infilled frames. Simulations of experimental force-deformation behavior of prototype infill frame subassemblies are performed to validate the proposed model. A lightly reinforced concrete frame structure is analyzed for strong ground motions to evaluate the influence of masonry infill panels on the dynamic response.

* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783540732945
* Binding: Hardcover

Product Description:

Engineering geology for underground rocks is a sub-discipline of engineering geology for describing and solving geological engineering problems encountered in underground mining, petroleum and civil engineering. It covers rock mechanics for underground rocks, rock hydraulics, wellbore mechanics, mine geology and mine hydrogeology.

This book clearly and systematically explains underground engineering geology principles, methods, theories and case studies, depicts engineering problems in underground rock engineering and how to study and solve them. It specially emphasizes mechanical and hydraulic couplings in rock engineering for wellbore stability, mining near aquifers and other underground structures where inflow is a problem. Using the methods and models given in this book, the reader is able to analyse underground geological engineering problems and also for the design of underground structures.

Professionals and students in engineering geology, geological, mining, petroleum, civil engineering, rock mechanics, and mine geology will find this an essential reference.

Tensile Fracturing in Rocks: Tectonofractographic and Electromagnetic Radiation Methods

* Publisher: Springer
* Number Of Pages: 570
* Publication Date: 2004-11-23
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3540214569
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783540214564

Product Description:
Understanding tensile fracture in rocks provides an important key for the interpretation of many problems in structural geology. This book presents a multidisciplinary approach to tensile fracture in rocks (faulting is briefly addressed), starting with an introduction to fracture physics and progressing through tectonofractographic features, characterized both in experimental settings and in geological outcrops. Four examples of sedimentary rocks and two of granites have been chosen to demonstrate the principles and problems in fracture geology. Principles of fracture mechanics and rock mechanics are applied throughout the book, which also explores current understanding about electromagnetic radiation induced by fractures and how such radiation can be used to monitor and predict earthquakes and hazardous collapses in mines. The monograph serves not only as a manual on how to handle specific problems and their solutions in fractual geology but also as a starting point for researchers and graduate students interested in the field of rock fracturing.

Asymptotic Methods in the Buckling Theory of Elastic Shells

* Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
* Number Of Pages: 360
* Publication Date: 2001-10
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9810247265
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9789810247263

Product Description:
This book contains solutions to the most typical problems of thin elastic shells buckling under conservative loads. The linear problems of bifurcation of shell equilibrium are considered using a two-dimensional theory of the Kirchhoff–Love type. The explicit approximate formulas obtained by means of the asymptotic method permit one to estimate the critical loads and find the buckling modes.
The solutions to some of the buckling problems are obtained for the first time in the form of explicit formulas. Special attention is devoted to the study of the shells of negative Gaussian curvature, the buckling of which has some specific features. The buckling modes localized near the weakest lines or points on the neutral surface are constructed, including the buckling modes localized near the weakly supported shell edge. The relations between the buckling modes and bending of the neutral surface are analyzed. Some of the applied asymptotic methods are standard; the others are new and are used for the first time in this book to study thin shell buckling. The solutions obtained in the form of simple approximate formulas complement the numerical results, and permit one to clarify the physics of buckling.
