We are at a new moment in architecture, one when many cultures are contributing to the unfolding of modernism. This enriching influence is broadening the mix, extending the range available toarchitecture, of materials and colours, of evocative forms, of cultural references and of social thinking. In an era of boredom with monocultures and orthodoxies, there is the almost universal expectation that the metroculture, be it in London or Beijing, will provide broadened cultural experiences in food, performance, dress and sound.
The new ethnically diverse city is a place of zesty daily encounters/collisions/cohabitation between cultures, a place of mixed signals, contradictions, delightful confusions. Franco-Japanese cuisine, elite schoolchildren wearing doo-rags, jazz performed on gamelans—no matter what one’s mother culture - we’re all getting addicted to varied rhythms, different emotional emphases, ‘other’ ideas of beauty. This change is visible in schools of architecture, at least in the range of students, typically from many ethnicities, none of them constituting a majority. No wonder, then, that there is increased interest in ways thatarchitecture can incorporate a larger compass of riches. A rising group of practitioners is meeting the challenge of this broadening cultural landscape in pursuing strategies of quick switching, layering, reframing. These new architectural expressions of multiple cultures represent an enrichment that ultimately might help create a more robust modernism, helping to rescue it from a ‘potato blight’ of too much sameness.

The Geology of Stratigraphic Sequences, 2rd Edition
Publisher: Springer | English | June 7, 2010 | ISBN: 3642050263 | PDF | 480 pages | 27.5Mb
It has been more than a decade since the appearance of the First Edition of this book. Much progress has been made, but some controversies remain. The original ideas of Sloss and of Vail (building on the early work of Blackwelder, Grabau, Ulrich, Levorsen and others) that the stratigraphic record could be subdivided into sequences, and that these sequences store essential information about basin-forming and subsidence processes, remains as powerful an idea as when it was first formulated. The definition and mapping of sequences has become a standard part of the basin analysis process. The main purpose of this book remains the same as it was for the first edition, that is, to situate sequences within the broader context of geological processes, and to answer the question: why do sequences form? Geoscientists might thereby be better equipped to extract the maximum information from the record of sequences in a given basin or region. Tectonic, climatic and other mechanisms are the generating mechanisms for sequences ranging over a wide range of times scales, from hundreds of millions of years to the high-frequency sequences formed by cyclic processes lasting a few tens of thousands of years

Bentley Map V8i (SELECTseries 1) 08.11.07.113 (30 days Trial)
Bentley Map V8i (SELECTseries 1) forms the foundation for the Bentley geospatial desktop and server products. It is a full-featured GIS designed to address the unique and challenging needs of organizations that map, plan, design, build, and operate the world’s infrastructure. It enhances underlying MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 1) capabilities to power precision geospatial data creation, maintenance, and analysis. Users can easily integrate data from a wide variety of sources into engineering and mapping workflows. Multiple data types with varying coordinate systems are transformed "on-the-fly" as they are added to a session. Powerful analytical and presentation tools allow for detailed analysis, studies and decision support.

Please correct if its not the proper request section,
I am BE civil practicing design engineer in Gujarat, India,
looking for Institute, which offer any kind of ME , Mtech programe
in structure engineering as Distance Education/correspondence.
I inquire in AMIE, the website gives only little information
but if someone, in the forum, who had done ME as distance learning can help me.
to found how to go through AMIE/ or any other university, Institute?
Regards
Soni

NOISE CONTROL
Concern about problems of noise in the workplace and in the living space
has escalated since the amendment of theWalsh–Healy Act of 1969. This act
created the first set of nationwide occupational noise regulations
(Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 1983). There is a real
danger of permanent hearing loss when a person is exposed to noise
above a certain level. Most industries are strongly motivated to find an
effective, economical solution to this problem.
The noise level near airports has become serious enough for some
people to move out of residential areas near airports. These areas were
considered pleasant living areas before the airport was constructed, but
environmental noise has changed this perception. The airport noise in the
areas surrounding the airport is generally not dangerous to a person’s
health, but the noise may be unpleasant and annoying.
In the design of many appliances, such as dishwashers, the designer
must be concerned about the noise generated by the appliance in operation;
otherwise, prospective customers may decide to purchase other quieter mod-
els. It is important that noise control be addressed in the design stage for
many mechanical devices.
